Wild Bull Elephant in Musth, Khao Yai National Park, Thailand. Part2

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

A stand off between rangers and a Bull Elephant in Musth as he is determined to break into a restaurant kitchen area at Khao Yai National Park.
This ongoing game of block and run went on for several hours with the Elephant determined not to return to the forest until he was ready. Full marks to the shepherding ranger in the blocking vehicle, interesting job!
Musth or must /ˈmʌst/ (Urdu: مست) is a periodic condition in bull (male) elephants, characterized by highly aggressive behavior and accompanied by a large rise in reproductive hormones. Testosterone levels in an elephant in musth can be as much as 60 times greater than in the same elephant at other times. However, whether this hormonal surge is the sole cause of musth, or merely a contributing factor, is unknown. Scientific investigation of musth is problematic because even the most placid elephants become highly violent toward humans and other elephants during musth.
I think he was pretty restrained really.

    I love all the "expert opinions". This is a wild elephant. He's free to roam where he pleases. Today he wanders in the town. This elephant is in musth. His temple glands are weeping musth oil and he dribbles urine constantly. Elephants aren't generally "psycho" in musth. As they get older the severity of the symptoms decrease. This tusker could smell food and was looking for an easy snack. He wasn't acting aggressively. The park rangers work with these elephants daily. They know each one and their personalities. The 🐘🐘🐘 also trust and respect the rangers. Here the rangers use their vehicle to guide this tusker back towards the forest. Nobody was hurt and minimal damage done. Just another day living amongst wild elephants.

    Yeah. And being in musth doesn't automatically mean that he's angry or upset. This elephant in fact was very happy. Look at 0:35 at the big smile on his face, and again at 1:05, this elephant was really enjoying himself with what he was doing

    Lovely magnificent calm old elephant. He's probably well known to the rangers and it to their jeeps. He smelt something in that kitchen that's for sure! In Africa you get these big big old bulls too that are pretty gentle. That's not to say you can go up to one and pat it on the leg but they are far more relaxed about life in general in or out of musth.

    I saw him a couple of weeks ago on a visit to Khao Yai. He has a pretty impressive little caravan of dedicated press cameras and fans. When ever he appears near the roads so do they. Some sit in their trucks at a certain junction under large trees all day, making coffee and chatting just to catch a glimpse and the opportunity to take his picture. He is utterly magnificent. We saw him at night when everyone was outside the park as we were staying inside the park. Huge glistening black and wet from the light rain, ripping large mouthfuls of lush grass as he went. The sound of him eating was the only sound you could hear. We were staying inside the park so had him all to ourselves. He was moving slowly along the road enjoying the grass next to it. A very African sighting, as this area where he was is savannah grassland (surrounded by thick jungle) and it's there along the surfaced road the grass is always thickest and greenest because of direct water run off. Even in lean rain fall the grass is always green along surfaced roads, heavy nightly dew (in Africa) mist and light drizzle is enough to keep it so. Next morning the caravan was back but he had moved over the hill just out of sight, all we saw was his giant head held aloft as he vanished over the hill but his presence was still causing much excitement. Bless P'Duan. I saw the damage he had done to the kitchen at the tourist centre cafe recognising it from this and another video LOL. Sadly during the three days we were staying in the park twelve elephants lost their lives when they plummeted over a waterfall, all trying to help one another as they fell. Horribly tragic. The good news though is that after the actions of one ex-ranger keeping vigil at the spot, until the authorities listened to him they are now moving the rest area (snack shop, visitor centre, WC and car park to the falls) which force the elephants to skirt around and into the path of the treacherous waterfall. This is not the first time this tragedy has happened. The rest area is their ancestral route around the danger. It's thought one of the tiny calves fell first after being washed down stream while being led across by the Matriarch. How those elephants year after year manage to negotiate those incredibly steep mountains and ravines which is almost 100% of the park is incredible. Sadly very little lowland forest still exists and almost none in the parks, all taken by agriculture and people. Nonethless they do and fatalities of this nature are rare, for such large creatures this is indeed utterly remarkable. Getting very excited to be with my beloved elephants in Africa again over Christmas, hoping to be with some of the elephants I have know over the years. At least if poachers haven't got there before me. Yes another seemingly unstoppable tragedy on our planet unfolding on our watch, they vanish one by one.

    @@agirlisnoone5953 The very old, very big ones generally are, however it's still wise not to invade their space or any wild elephant's space for that matter. Complacency is a killer. Far as my experience goes it's younger bulls in musth that are the most frenzied by the hormone rush. Having said that I once sat and watched a large bull in his prime in musth fighting a giant ancient tree. He wouldn't give up until that tree had fallen a few degrees, even then he kept going back and back to it. Completely ignored me just twenty or so meters away, taking out all his frustration on that tree and any branches he could rip off. You can see how they can break their tusks doing this as the sheer force and power is unbelievable.

  • @equestanton1017

    @equestanton1017

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@CreatorsHubCreates Some are, some aren't. A lot depends on the age of the elephant, the time of musth and individual personality. Musth builds up and wanes, the flood of testosterone is not constant, so depends on the stage of musth. Older elephants will have less testosterone and some younger elephants the same but more energy and not all musth translates into "aggressive" behaviour, certainly unpredictable behaviour. I watched a bull destroy an enormous tree while in musth, shaking it until it fell. All his frustrations were aimed at that tree. He would do frenzied laps from me to the tree but the tree bore the brunt of his energy. It was almost like saying to me 'look what I can do". Coming right up to me, i could smell his breath, shrieking and shaking his gaint head held high then storming straight back at the tree for another assault. This went on for hours. Think he was lonely too as there weren't any other elephants for thirty miles circumference. I had flown in that morning and spotted him at the tree from the air. His everything fixated on the tree. Destructive, compulsive at the height of Musth.

    Elephants move only in elephant corridors. This elephant must have been searching for water in his elephant corridors to cool off. Encroachments into elephant corridors should be removed. Settlers and farmers should be advised to by pass the elephant corridors to avoid human elephant confrontations. Elephants are eco engineers and preserve the trees and Savannah in their elephant corridors and prevent mud sliding and floods and loss of life.

    He's not "wild" and crazy, he's in musk and that can make an elephant act wild and crazy, just as it does in humans during adolescence. He's only looking for someone to wrestle with -- like another bull elephant.

    if the pachyderm was in REAL musth nothing much of that whole camp would have been standing. and the elephant most probably would have to be shot by a ranger. he just wanted something to eat. give him a crate of bananas or greens or carrots or whatever was there. and the *beast* would have been eating that and walk peacefully away again.
