Wild Blackberry Pie |Baking in the Forest| Our Family Recipe

Justine would like to share her fiancé's family recipe for wild blackberry pie. We love it! I just adore simple foods that focus is on quality ingredients. This can also be prepared as a cobbler if you remove the bottom crust. Blackberries are native to many countries, including the United States. Wild blackberries were an important food resource for Native Americans and colonists.

I was having a MOMENT with that pie. Below you will find the recipe. Thank you for watching and be sure to head over to our 2nd channel Frontier Patriot once you're done here to watch us eat this delicious pie & chat with you all. Rayfield family pie crust. This was Ron's grandma's: 3 cups of flour 1 & 1/3 cup of butter, cold Salt, a pinch Vinegar, a dash 1 egg 1/3 cup cold water Combine the flour & salt. Add the butter (if you cut it into cubes first it's easier to work with). Work into the flour with 2 knives until the butter is the size of peas throughout. In a bowl whisk together an egg with your water & vinegar before combining this with the other ingreidnets to form a dough. This is enough to make a top and a bottom crust. For the pie: Wild blackberries, at least 3 cups but the more the better 3/4 cup sugar + more for sprinkling on top 1/4 cup flour A bit of butter for rubbing on top Lay a pie crust onto the bottom of a pie plate. In a bowl combine your blackberries, sugar & flour. Mix up well before pouring this filling into your pie plate. Cover with a top crust and crimp the edges as you desire. Be sure to cut out a vent on top so that steam may be let out while baking. Rub the top crust with butter then sprinkle with sugar. Bake for 30-40 minutes at 350 degrees.

Looks delicious. I picked blackberries with my MAMA many times growing up in KY,June bugs were pesky and we had to watch for snakes, the briars would poke but a cobbler made from those natural berries were worth it every time ❤😊

I don't believe I've ever made a pie crust that had egg in. Egg wash on top, yes, but not in the crust itself.

This recipe is very similar to my mom's particularly the filling, except she uses frozen fruit that's been thawed and drained, which creates a dryer pie that can be held in the hand and eaten. A lot of the ladies from our church use a cooked filling for their pies, but my Mom sees no reason to go to the extra effort-- four cups of fruit combined with half a cup of sugar and a quarter cup of flour, put in a pie crust and baked until the crust is golden and the fruit is bubbly, that's a recipe that you can actually call as easy as pie.

Your pie turned out beautifully and looks so tasty. Wish we had smell-a-vision. This video brought back so many good childhood memories for me. Grew up on my grandparents' farm in northeast Georgia, and there was several acres of pasture not in use any more where wild blackberries had taken over. When they were at their peak, usually just after the 4th of July, I would wake up early in the morning, load up a couple of bushel baskets on the tractor with a couple of gallons of water and some PB&J sandwiches and spend all day picking. First thing my grandmother would do was make me a blackberry cobbler or pie. The rest of the berries she would make into jams and jellies. Thanks again for sharing

I love how you can see Justine's excitement for this pie just before she puts it in the oven. I was excited for this pie, and I didn't even get to eat it! I love pie. It's my favorite dessert of all time! Oh, and you're correct about the GMO stuff they put in our stores and try to call it "food" compared to the real thing. There's no comparison. Cultivated has no flavor, or is bitter, while real fruit is sweet and bursting with flavor!

Starting about 60 years ago when I was eight, I used to grab a pail and walk up and down the roads picking blackberries when they were in season. Sometimes I'd eat a few of them right off the bush. My pail would be filled to about an inch from the top. But since my family was a large one, the blackberries would go fast. My mom would use what I brought home to top vanilla ice cream with or make jams or add them to coffee cakes. You're so right! Those little wild blackberries tasted better than the giant store-bought ones.

The house I grew up in from age 3-11 had blackberry bushes growing in the alleyway. The blackberries were the size of the engineered ones shown in the video. I used to pick them, wash them, and eat them as a snack during the summer. It's a nice little memory I have from when I was a child.

That looks so delish! My great grandmother used to send us kids out to pick blackberries and she'd make tarts and jam with them. This one brought back some memories.

I grew up eating blackberries straight off the vine in the woods surrounding our home. I can't imagine how tedious it must've been to pick enough for a pie though! Thank you for another one of your always pleasant relaxing videos.
