Wild and Tough: Jim Walmsley's Hardrock 100 Solo Attempt

Jim Walmsley has trained in the mountains in and around Silverton, Colorado for the last five years. He has fallen in love with the San Juan Mountains and looks forward to his summer pilgrimage. After the global pandemic forced us all to reset our expectations for 2020, Jim was curious about giving the Hardrock 100 course a true effort.
With only a few friends and family members to support him, he set off by himself in the mountains with a goal of returning to Silverton as fast as possible. With audacious dreams come extraordinary results and this effort stayed true to that. Jim's style has set him apart from the running world for the last few years and this attempt was no different.

When I first came across Jim I thought he was arrogant and way too full of himself. But the more I see, the more I realise the guy deserves enormous respect. What he has is self belief in spades, and a serious and honest attitude to himself and his running, always making sure he's pushing it to his limits. He really is one of the best ever.

A "failure" for Jim Walmsley is the achievement of a lifetime for anyone else. That guy is so incredible it blows my mind. It's nice to see that he really is human, but I'll continue looking up to him like a God. Rock on, Jim!!

Good to see an account of the days that go wrong for elite runners; makes it easier for us amateur runners to accept our own bad days as being an occassional part of the experience. Hope Jim does try another solo in the future...along with his team.

I think this right here is why Jim Walmsley is the best today and has had all the successes he has. He is not afraid to fail. We learn 100X more from our failures than our successes. They say success is going from failure to failure with no loss of passion. Jim personifies that:) Not that this is a "failure" per say (by anyone else's standards) but you know what I mean:)

I sincerely hope Jim Walmsley knows that there are more people behind him, hoping he hits his goals, however he approaches them, then there are naysayers. If 'go big and go hard' is what makes sense to Jim, more power to him! As he says, each outing he is gaining knowledge to fuel the next attempt. And if he nailed it each time, first time, what would be the interest for him? Me, I'm looking forward to watching whatever he decides to shoot for next and for when he comes back to the Hardrock course :-)

I love Jim's attitude that he's going to try to reach his goals even if he encounter failure along the way. He's trying even if he never succeeds. I think that's an awesome way to live life. I think the video was well put together too.

Many see DNF as a failure but that is simplistic, lizard brain, thinking. Jim is a “dreamer” and runs with a bravery worthy of admiration. Unfortunately, some mistake his bravery for arrogance, but that is once again simplistic thinking. Don’t let the negative voices dissuade you, your dreaming is infectious and motivates many, myself included. Enjoy the journey!
