Tyson and Wheaton were awesome. Would love to see just the two of them together someday.

Wil Wheaton is easily one of my favorite people of all time. He truly understands the significance of technological advancement and he’s a great advocate for it. Really nice guy, progressive, and influential.

Didn't really get to say much to him, but his talk on his thoughts while watching movies was hilarious!

3:30 - Just like Wil says that he invented a series of buttons to do each specific operation on the ship, William Hartnell, the first Doctor in Doctor Who said that the children would notice whether he was hitting the same buttons each time he did something, so it was extremely important that he remember, and that Patrick Troughton learn it (as long as they had the same console).

Wil and Neil need their own show together.

I love how passionate Neil gets

Not only do the doors open when you approach them on the ship. But they also sense when the character is going to stop and turn around for some more dramatic dialogue. They do. Check it out. DOOR: He wasn`t leaving, he`s got more to say, better stay closed or he`s going to look stupid.

I would like about another hour of this Star Trek and physics and the Universe discussion. Interesting and funny.

Ya know, Kristen was the ideal comedian for StarTalks. She was letting the discussion flow, would make jokes at the appropriate time and not cut people off consistently, and it genuinely seemed like she was paying attention as well as enthused.

I LITERALLY JUST WATCHED THE SCENE THAT WESLEY IS TALKING ABOUT AND ITS BLOWING MY MIND --- HE _TOTALLY_ HESITATED BEFORE THE DOOR, AND I NOTICED IT, AND THOUGHT 'huh that's weird' AND NOW IT MAKES SENSE. I love star trek so much T.T T.T

That was amazing! That grabbed my attention, made me laugh out loud, and made me forget I wasn't in the room with these guys. What a great show!

i worked with the guy that invented the mri, he was a trip! the hypotheticals, debates, i got so anxious to to find more theories.

Man Neil goes on so many tangents. No-one can finish their stories with him. Got to love it!

Only Will Wheaton's optimism can make the world seem like a wonderful place lol

I am still trying to get my sister to understand that we OWN the words 'nerd' and 'geek' now. This was a lot of fun. And those other three people? I like their ability to jump in, be funny and not disrupt things.

It's surreal to hear and see how much Star Trek influenced the real world around us. Also, good jokes from those 3 :)

I really like the comedians. It keeps the topics lighter and gives you a laugh after some heavy thinking

(A huge fan of Neil, and really everybody on stage), loved it. I thought it was kind of funny that Neil didn’t break it down and explain to Kristen exactly what a light year is 😄. When I don’t know something, I like it when somebody talks to me like a little kid. 😊 It helps one to understand

The standup MRI is actually a real thing. In Umea in Sweden they have it to scan the patient in a standing position. For example when the patient has a neckproblem it can sometimes only show when standing.

I love this video. So funny. I had no idea Wil was so engaging. And I like the comedians there as well. Made it even more entertaining. This is the 3rd time I've watched this.

Neil deGrasse Tyson is now my favorite scientist. Heres why: He is literally the High-Lord Supernerd. I felt like I was stepping into a conversation between myself and my friends about this sort of topic.

Yeah people bash on Neil because he does so many "celebrity" type projects so they say he isn't a "real scientist". Really though they are just jealous that a dude that is that smart also has the personality and charisma to captivate audiences when talking about just about any topic. In summation--Neil is da man.

Any scientist can go out and do a talk about mindblowing jargon-heavy scientific concepts, but it takes a certain personality to be able to explain these concepts to laypeople, and make it accessible and easy to understand, AND interesting to listen to. NDT has that personality, watching his videos, watching Cosmos and suchlike, it does what 5 years of secondary-school classes failed to do: It makes me interested in science and want to learn more!

This was hilarious!!! I love Neil deGrasse Tyson. You can see how passionate he is about science. I would love to have an opportunity to sit and chat with him.

All the Eugene/Neil episodes are perfect I'd watch a show with them two as hose.

Also, just realised, we got Kristen Schaal and Neil Degrasse Tyson onstage together, and this is before they worked together on Gravity Falls as Mabel Pines and Waddles the pig!

This was just so, so good. Neil is just amazing. He could explain anything to anybody...how I wish I was young and could study under him.

Science and humor. What a combination. Wait let's make a TV series. And call it the Big Bang Theory. This was absolutely fantastic.

I love stand-up comedy, and I think all three of these comedians are funny. They did what they were brought there to do. I'm just baffled as to why they were brought there to do it. Wheaton and Tyson are charming and energetic enough to carry the show. Having Mirman, Tompkins, and Schaal there felt a little bit like having jugglers at a spelling bee.

Holy shit I couldn't be on this show....I'd constantly tell people to "Stop *$#&^@@! interrupting me!!!!"

Gotta love Wil Wheaton! Defending geekdom successfully.

no matter how many times I listen to this, "Welsey" gets me every time :)

I have a 6 week Elective from IUPUI on my college transcript regarding this subject. Yes, I have a Star Trek College Credit. The physics of Star Trek.

Been to this theater many times, just across the I-5 from the Univ. of WA. The Friday and Saturday Midnighters are legendary. Film Noir ... to be sure. First place I saw Rocky Horror performed by audience members, complete with props.

Lol the "So this time Patrick and I did the thing..." Reminds me of when Mica Burton mentions "Uncle Pat" [record scratch] "You mean Sir Patrick Stewart." "Yeah, uncle Pat."

I love this!!!!! Everytime Kristen Schaal or Eugene Mirman speaks all i can picture is Louise and Gene Belcher and it the greatest thing I have ever watched!!

Two of my favorite people together talking about my favorite things! Star Trek and scienece Yay!

Star Trek is a foundation for the future of technology. I think it is great that it has such an influence.

The BEST Star Talk has have ever seen!!! The author of Tom Swift Sr said "if man can think it, it can be done" or something similar.. See any of those books and you will about everything he imagined in use today. And don't forget Tom Swift Jr ✌️❤️😀

I got the impression that warp drives worked by creating a bubble around the ship which wasn't quite fully connected to the surrounding universe. It created a new frame of reference, one in which the speed of light is not exceeded by the ship, even though the bubble itself (not being matter) is able to exceed the speed of light. Thus the ship effectively moved at many times the speed of light without ever breaking light speed.

One idea that Neil has expressed in multiple interviews over the years is that people have a general interest in science but between schooling, testing, and their everyday lives, their desire and passion to learn gets essentially beaten out of them. Finding new, interesting ways to get people to pay attention and have a discussion/open their minds to science is important, and segments such as this can go a long way towards doing that. Having comedic relief (in my opinion) can also make these ideas more accessible to the common viewer. It is nice to know that you don't have to be a scientist, or even particularly smart in order to have a discussion and start thinking about science. Science doesn't always have to be serious discussion. Perhaps the first step into getting someone interested in science again is to make it fun and accessible. So for all of the people complaining about the comedians on Star Talk, you really need to get over yourselves and just enjoy the show.

Iif you want more people to read your stuff, put some empty lines between paragraphs. This block hurts my eyes! That said, I think you are right, however I felt like 30 minutes was wayyyy too short for Wheaton and Tyson alone, so I understand why everyone is so annoyed by them.

This is why I like watching Neil, Bill Nye & Michio Kaku explain science, they make it fun and explain things in ways we understand.

The Milky Way contains between 200 and 400 billion stars and Neil is on first name basis with a lot of them.

I have not seen Toy Soldiers, I went to wikipedia and searched the film immediately after the reference at 2:19 or so and now I really want to see that movie. Sounds interesting and with several fine actors. Yet another step in my personal film appreciation class I put myself through. Thanks Eugene Mirman. For not only being funny but challenging my mind. Plus I hope i spelled his name right because that was from memory.

I was thinking the opposite. Had it been Neil and Wil only, it would have been awesome. But the addition of the other three, whose sole purpose was to interrupt every explanation with nonsense was so very distracting.

The funny lady from "last man of earth" asked the stright forward question how far is a light year. And I noted how long it took for Neil to get this question and respond to it.

Wil wheaton has such a great sense of humor.

Apparently I have to correct what Neil said about traveling across the galaxy. people in Star Trek never traveled across the Galaxy (except by accident - Voyager). Even going across a quadrant of the galaxy needed warp drive in order to not take forever though.

i like how Will mentioned how star trek has actually influenced science....like it did in the history of the orville

The thought that Wil did not finish (I think he was going here) is that the Prime Directive on Star Trek meant you could not go to the past and alter it in such a way that it would change the future (they actually broke this rule all the time). But by existing in our time, Star Trek may have altered the future by presenting inventions that inspired us to invent them, thereby altering the future [cue Twilight Zone music].

I could watch this for ten hours straight.

I live in Seattle, how did I not know this was going to happen? Why was I not there? Fail on my part.

Wil is a funny guy, but he also is enough of a science geek that he understands most of what Neil is saying, so he can make relevant jokes. The 3 comedians are like "I know most of those words, but I don't get how they have arranged them."... one of them thought a light year was a measurement of time.

8:40 Ho ho hold on a minute! I've got to TOTALLY nerd out here... What Neil, bless his heart, describes is NOT warp drive. No sir-ee bob. What he is describing is technically more of a "jump" than what propels one of our favorite spaceships along through space. When you hear in a sci-fi show that they are performing a hyperspace JUMP, they're doing what Neil is describing. What a warp field does is more akin to squeezing a watermelon seed between your fingers. The engines actually WARP space (and time? help me out here, guys...) around the ship such that it literally squirts it forward very quickly. Which is why they can go faster than light and not reverse age or something like that. They are literally in a bubble of Space/Time scooting along. In a weird way they aren't really even moving. And as warp engines got more powerful (over the series) they began to be able to make that effect larger such that they reached to their destination more quickly. But whatever. There ya go. A "jump" and "warp engines" are not the same. Thank you and good night. :P

Yeeeeaaah and that's what I was saying. Yes, the Spacing Guild in the Dune universe used a form of folding space like Neil described. Just like any other sci-fi story where the travelers "jump" across a gap of folded space, whether it happens instantly or takes a short period of time to do so. And your point is? heh, heh. ;) :P

aerowerks Also, yeah, "warp" is sometimes used synonymously in some sci-fi with "jump". Hence, probably the confusion. But, regardless of what any ooooooother sci-fi stories out there use to get their crews to travel long distances, what Neil described here is NOT how the Enterprise (NX-01,A,B,C,D,E or not bloody any of those letters) travels. :)
