This video is a taster for the DVD/Blu-Ray/Visual Album “Mein Wien / My Vienna” which is Jonas Kaufmann’s deeply personal tribute to the world-famous melodies from the birthplace of waltz and operetta and follows up the release of his album “Wien”. The 100-minute film presents Jonas Kaufmann’s wonderful concert filmed at the Wiener Konzerthaus in October 2019, interspersed with segments where he explores the city’s fascinating lighter musical heritage. His Wiener Konzerthaus concert includes well-known Viennese songs like “Wien, Wien nur du allein,“ “Im Prater blühn wieder die Bäume,“ “Sag beim Abschied leise Servus.“ He also sings scenes from famous operettas such as “The Merry Widow,” “Wiener Blut” and “Die Fledermaus” where soprano Rachel Willis-Sørensen joins him on the duets with Jochen Rieder conducting the PKF Prague Philharmonia.
Jonas Kaufmann has always had a special rapport with Austria and Vienna. His grandmother had a fondness for the light classics and was happy to sing the evergreens of Johann Strauss, Franz Lehár, and Robert Stolz - a nice contrast to his grandfather’s passion for Wagner. As a child, Jonas spent much of his free time on his grandparents’ farm in Tyrol. Austrian television was almost more familiar to him than its German counterpart. Since then he has had a deep love for Viennese songs and operetta. “The music always put me in a good mood”, he recalls. “When I had unlikeable things to do as a student, like cleaning or vacuuming, all I had to do was play Carlos Kleiber’s Fledermaus recording, and in no time at all, I had a grin on my face.” The Music included is by Johann Strauß, Franz Léhar, Emmerich Kálmán, Robert Stolz, Ralph Benatzky, Jaromir Weinberger, Peter Kreuder, and Georg Kreisler.

So who wants to waltz with Jonas Kaufmann then? Me, me, me! Lol. Rachel Willis-Sorensen and he are so brilliant together in the Mein Wien concert and this Wiener Blut is fantastic. Jonas sings beautifully in this concert, wonderful melodies from operetta and Vienna. It's gorgeous. ❤

Vienna Blood has always been my favorite Strauss waltz - I have 4 recordings of this. I never heard the vocalization until this year because I've become such a huge fan of Jonas Kaufmann. I bought his CD "Wien" and heard this rendition for the first time - blew me away, but when I found this video on KZread - WOW! Fantastic!

This performance is magnificent. Jonas and Rachel's expressive singing adds to this delightful little "discusson" between them. I understood the subtext before I read the translation. Lol Wien is an excellent CD ! Who cares how long the high "C" lasts when Jonas is giving such cute faces to Rachel?
