Wien - Vienna 1939 - Stadtrundgang - City Roundtrip - Wiener Eislauf Verein

Ойын-сауық

Schliesslich Szenen vom Flughafen. Anfragen: archiv@koelnprogramm.de
Camera visit to Vienna in January 1939. The city appears to be busy and with a lot of traffic. The loss of Austria's independence since 1938 is reflected in the flags and the propaganda boards of the "Winter Hilswerk" (WHW) with the inscription: A people help themselves. In addition to the well-known sights of the city, this unknown amateur filmmaker from the Rhineland also shows the gigantic open-air ice rink of the Vienna Ice Skating Association. Finally scenes from the airport. Requests: archiv@koelnprogramm.de

That was one year after the Anschluss, life looks like it's pretty much normal, I always wondered. Ah wow, skating on Strauss, my dream!!!! Here in Quebec we have the ice, as to the composers... there is some work left to do I suppose! Thank you, lovely images.

*_It reminded me of my trip there in 1977 when I enjoyed Kaffee mit Kuchen at the Mozart Café. I remember it well and wondered why the waiter also brought me a glass of water when I had not ordered one._*

Der Blick in längst vergangene und auch ganz andere normale Zeiten stimmt mich etwas depressiv. Trotzdem sehr schöne Aufnahmen.

For context for those curious: After WW1 and the collapse of Austria's empire, they were forbidden from unifying with Germany despite a massive popular push to do so (with the newly-founded Austrian Republic even originally naming itself "The Republic of German-Austria". The rise of the Nazis somewhat hurt unification propaganda somewhat hurt this movement due to its conflict with the home-grown Austrian fascist movement, but this ended with the assassination of the Austrian Chancellor by Nazi sympathizers. The annexation of Austria happened under the demand of Hitler, and only afterwards did he hold a referendum on whether or not the Austrians supported this. While the ballots were not secret and were absolutely done in such a way as to favour the Nazis, it is undeniable that a majority of the Austrian people favoured the Anschluss, or "Connection", between the oldest German land and Germany itself. Very little resistance to this idea existed and that which did tended to be based on ideas of Austrian nationalism (such as the Trapp family from the entertaining but deeply inaccurate Sound of Music) rather than specific opposition to Nazi ideology.
