Wider Tires and Rims on Your Car: A Foolish Idea?!

A simple modification method is to make the car tires wider and change the size and width of the rims to be larger. This is the easiest way to enhance the appearance of the car. But what are the actual advantages and disadvantages of modifying car tires to be wider? Are there more pros or cons?

changed a set of 205/55/16 to a set of 225/50/16. Didn't change the diameter or sidewall one bit and increased width by .8 inches. The cornering difference was like night and day better.
I do the opposite I put smaller tires and rims on cars because it lowers unsprung weight, improves breaking, lowers the vehicle making it handle better and more aerodynamic, and lowers gear ratio improving acceleration.
Sticking to factory rims and tyre size is always best idea.

LOL no, most OEM wheel tire combos are grossly overweight per corner compared to a well chosen 3rd party wheel tire combo. My Veloster N stock 19 inch wheels and tires are 6 pounds per corner heavier while being skinnier than the 18 inch (more sidewall) set I put on. Edit: Same for my Jeep, went wider and larger (33in stock vs 35in) yet still saved 9 lbs per corner with no hit to MPG. It's all in choosing higher quality products than overweight, short tread life, inferior wet/snow performing OEM.
