Mogul skiing WINTER PARK
Knee Angulation Julie Ray Mark Kahre
So, I want to just, um, you know, we had a bunch of powdery snow the other day, but I want to bring it back to really good body position and where we want to find ourselves skiing bumps. So, I want everybody to just lean as far forward as you can, feeling your shins in the front of your boots. Now, bend your knees and pull your chest back so that we're really nicely stacked over our skis. But do you feel your shins? Okay, so that's what I want us to try and feel as we're turning today. Okay, but we're going to start with a drill on the side here in this nice corduroy snow where we're getting our skis a little bit farther apart and we're tipping the skis on edge. And a lot of times, I see people holding themselves up with their knees. So, what we're going to do is we are going to cross our poles and we're pushing our knees outside to side. We're going to make more of a GS turn, pushing our uphill knee so we get on that outside edge. Okay? So, what we're trying to feel is like I said, tipping our skis on edge. And I like to think of ankle flexion and our knees are pointing in the direction we want to go so that we get on that outside uphill Edge. So, when everybody had their legs apart, it was much easier to have our uphill ski on edge. As we come together as mobile skiers, our feet aren't pinned together, they're still apart, and you can think of having your downhill knee drive into the uphill knee, pushing it on edge, right? So, let's make some shorter radius turns. I want to think of making s-shaped turns so we're releasing on the newer edge quicker, you know, we don't need to get our skis all the way across the hill, but let's again have our feet just a little bit apart so we can feel that outside edge. Okay? So, a lot of these drills that we do are designed to get us thinking of different ideas, instead of just coming out and just skiing and turning on autopilot. Back in the day, some of the best skiers were the ballet skiers because they really understood all their edges from skiing, you know, forwards, backwards, edge sets, all that kind of thing. And so, I just want to do some, you know, some different kind of Javelin drills. It's helping us to understand, you know, what it feels like when that edge engages, when we're actually carving. I mean, the ski just goes along and it feels so good versus just that sliding sensation, right? So, we are going to come across the hill, we're going to pick up our ski and then tap the tail too and just notice with this, this is kind of your own exploration to feel when you're doing different body movements on your skis, what happens to your weight? Am I forward? Am I back? What makes it easier? What makes it harder? So, just notice that. I find, just so we'll see if everybody's on the same page that when I'm balanced over my skis, I can do a lot more of all kinds of things. Okay, so it's going to look like so. Oh, all so everybody's turns are looking really good. I want to just think about what's happening now from our hips to our shoulders. So, just like everybody looks as we're standing right here, no one's hinging at the waist or rounding over their shoulders. They're just standing nice and tall, right? We're going to do the same thing as we ski, keeping our arms out in front, nothing's touching us right. Have nice space and just make your pole plant in front of the tip of your ski and let's just feel our nice shin pressure as we're tipping the ski on an edge making some short radius turns. Do not have a death grip with your pole, right? I tend to hold them lightly in my hand so I get a little bit of swing. You know, once we start tensing any part of our body, we waste energy, right? So, relax with your pole plant. It is our timing device. So again, rolling and pointing our knees in the direction we want to go, feeling our shins in the front of our boots, and when our hands are in front it helps keep our weight forward as well.

Love the tip about driving the downhill knee into the uphill knee to put so that uphill ski goes on edge. That's a critical tip for me to insure my skis track smoothly together. Thank you! (also love "closing the cabinet door with the inside knee" tip)

The pushing the knee outside, is that to prevent A-frame?

Yes, assist in eliminating the A-frame and focus on feeling the uphill outside edge

@@julierayrealtor7996 Nice. Helps to engage that edge. Another way would be to place the hand outside, then activate the muscles needed to press our knee against that hand.
