Mogul skiing WINTER PARK
How do I get better at moguls skiing?
Yeah, let's make short-radius turns all the way to the bottom. If normally you'd only make 25 turns, let's shoot for 75, okay? Really try to get our legs warmed up a little bit. Watch these short-radius turns. Okay, so we are going to do a little bit of a side-skipping drill to focus on separation of our upper and lower body. So, again, I want everyone ready to, you know, have a hold of their poles, not a death grip, and we're going to keep our hands facing down the fall line even though our skis are facing the tree line, right? So, it's essentially a side look like so you can feel the come on in got a people. So, we're going to try this one more time. Everybody's trying to progress this a little bit quicker and make the turn. I want to keep going on one side for four times then swap directions, okay? So, okay, so you don't stop so you don't stop and stay the same direction. You can really feel my hands are here, not down here. Put my hands up but my goal is to keep my chest down the fall line and my hands down. Side, then the switch. It is hard 'cause you don't want to let our shoulder come down the hill. So, I think of taking this outside arm by my tip and extending my elbow a little bit more so that everything is down the fall. So, when we go in the opposite direction, just think of it. It's definitely feeling like we've got our steering wheel or whatever so both hands are right there and not dropped. Once we drop one of those hands, you know, we're back in the back feet. So, let's let's this time try linking it but definitely have a pause before you go in the other direction, okay? You don't think more. Like, we're to practice get the upper section again just our our picture frame drill CU I liked seeing what it did to everybody's body position. Alright, keeping our hands up and over be and our focus has been body separation today, Carol. Okay, so let your feet move below your poles, really quiet upper body but let's not have our hands touching. Let's extend those elbows, okay? Short radius, look. Okay, so we're going to hold our PS normal again and I I want to go slow but I want to see if you can feel that same body position that we've been keeping, you know, everything's happening from our waist down. Our knees are going pointing in the direction we want to go and our upper her body is not tracking. It's a little busy all of a sudden. So, one thing I want everybody just to kind of be aware of is sometimes I see with our wrists we do kind of some weird things and, you know, I don't know what it is but I want to avoid having our wrists come so that our knuckles are facing each other. I want to have them, you know, if you keep your fingers straight, they're pointing down the hill and then we just grab our pole or holding our wrist out for me this seems very hard but I see a lot of it we we see it so it's just a lightly holding our PHS our knuckles stay down the fall line and here we're going to make the short radius turns again we're not swinging our upper body kind of like our picture frame our feet are moving underneath us and from our hips to the top of the head we're really quiet right nothing touching you know let's get those hands out and just make the short radius turn C okay slow is our friend some thanks again for watching don't forget to hit the like button subscribe and share your comments until next time.

Wow Julie, you have the best mogul/short turn ski technique on the planet. Best/clearest ski lessons ever. Thank you so much for making these amazing videos.

The biggest break-through for me in the moguls was aggressive retraction (pulling the ski back underneath you) of the free (inside) foot. This keeps the ski from racing out ahead of you. This one move instantly helped me regain balance in the bumps.

Hey @williamtaylor5193, I appreciate you sharing your breakthrough in moguls! It's fantastic to hear about techniques that make a significant difference. I totally agree with you on the importance of aggressive retraction to maintain control and balance in the bumps. In fact, I recently made a video where I delve into this technique and its impact on mogul skiing. Check it out here: [Video Link](kzread.info/dash/bejne/aGd1srRuXa7XZJM.html). I hope it adds some value to your insights, and I'm always open to discussing and sharing tips within the skiing community. Thanks for being part of the conversation! 🎿

Re Julie's videos: At the top of each up-unweigh, skis pointing down the fall-line, your uphill ski should be 'back' under your hip, and only your feet and shins are rotating. Then step on the turning ski, under your hip, and flex your weight onto the ball of your big toe = speed control. Bingo.....you're doing mogul turns like Julie....with a bit of practice!!!

For viewers/students, note that her hands are just above the hips, and below the sternum. Also, a slightly shorter pole really helps in the moguls.

It's awesome that you pointed out this detail for viewers and students. And your tip about using a slightly shorter pole in the moguls is spot-on - it can enhance maneuverability and control. Thanks for sharing these insights! 🎿✨

@@julierayrealtor7996 regarding the 'weird' things with the poles, I teach a drill where the skier swings the pole in the hand between the thumb and index finger. This unconsciously forces the skier to place their hand/wrist in the proper position and relaxes the pole swing. The strong hand grip only occurs when the pole actually contacts the snow.

arms are forward and raching up on the mogul ..shorter pole because the moguls are higher as your body is under the trough...

Nice video of you making short radius turns showing knee angle, lead change, arm box. Do you ever talk about the uphill hip drive initiating lead change? As soon as the previous turn ends, I focus on driving my new uphill hip, (my gluteus medius mainly) driving forward down the fall line. I think of this hip being connected to my femur/knee, and it drives them forward into lead change. Now I'm in position for the next mogul way ahead of time. Does that make sense?

You don't want to push the hips downhill as it constitutes a defensive move, which is not the desired technique in mogul skiing.

@@julierayrealtor7996 Actually, the more I think about it, when setting up for the new turn, (before I contact the mogul), I move my hips to the inside of the turn at the same time the I "close the kitchen cabinet door" with my new inside knee.

I didn't describe it right. Upon release of my DH ski, I drive it down the fall line and to the inside or up the hill. Some instructors call it "foragonal" forward and at an angle up the hill.@@julierayrealtor7996
