Omg your client Kathy's quilt is gorgeous. I know many ppl think of vintage being the 1950's ( lol the decade I was born), but to me vintage is the 1930's n before. Her quilt could be a 1930's. Ty for your time n information. ❤

Every time I send my quilts out for quilting I buy the backing from the long arm quilter. So carrying wide backing would be advantageous . Saving time and money is always a good thing. Please do if you'd like my business.

I recently began purchasing 108” backings and I’m hooked! I have found many fabric patterns to choose from as I create the total look of the quilt. For that reason I would continue to purchase as I do now, unless using a neutral solid color. I absolutely love your work and can’t wait to send my quilt tops to you!!

I’ve bought wide backings and I’ve pieced backings. Backings pieced from yardage is better for me if I have the yardage in stash. Wide backings are better if I have to buy and I find a print I like. As far as piecing the backing, back in the day, and I started quilting ~1980, we would never make 1 seam in the middle. We would split the second length of fabric and sew it to both sides. And the backing “should” run lengthwise though I’m happy to break this rule if it makes sense based on the quilt size. Using the backing sideways was called railroading. I had a longarmer who did lots of quilting for me in recent years but now I live in Italy so shipping back and forth to the States in expensive and slow and seems risky. But if I were to use a quilter in the States, I would want to use batting and backing provided by the quilter. What cotton batting(s) do you offer?

I really appreciate you explaining the benefits of using wide backings versus regular quilting cottons. I always wondered if the quality was better when using regular quilting cottons. Long ago, I heard that you shouldn't use wide backing fabric on the front of quilts (as in piecing blocks) due to it being of lesser quality. I think that has changed though. I would love it if my long arm quilter carried several choices of wide backing, especially if I started mailing my quilts. Yes, I would be willing to purchase the extra backing fabric to use as binding or in other quilts.

I watch many quilting channels and yours has become my favorite. I just turned 83 and have always sewed and needle worked. I took quilting classes in 2011 and have been hooked ever since. My original binding was the same as yours. I discovered Fons and Porter binding ruler and have enjoyed using it successfully. I would like having the option to purchase the backing and batting from the longarmer.

Oh, you didn't. We each have our favorites because we all have different tastes.

I have only used The Binding Tool since I started quilting. I learned how to use it from Jenny at Missouri Star. I'd rewatch to learn again when I would do binding. I put notes on my tool so I wouldn't get confused--game changer for me. Thanks for sharing the beautiful customer quilts! Great discussion on backings. I use widebacks on larger quilts and I almost always buy neutral colors when it's on sale.

Yes! The Binding Tool is so helpful. I finally am to the point that I don't have to watch the video each time! So glad!

I use a lot of 108 fabric. I like them for over sized lap quilts some times I can multi’s frame them and any extra goes for bindings or my scraps for other quilts. It’s a win-win in my book!

I make mostly queen and king quilts and I LOVE wide backs. I do not like piecing a quilt back. The 108 is so economical that I buy it and use it for my background in my quilt patterns. It's a little harder to fold and cut, but it's so much cheaper for me that it's worth it. I'm addicted to it.

The client said it is Disappearing Nine Patch and that if you Google it, you'll get all different types of layouts. Let me know what you find. I haven't looked for it yet. Thanks Jeanne!

I purchase wide backs for my quilts often. I buy black wide back by bolt as I use a lot of black In sashing and boarders as make lots of scrap quilts.

I try to always buy my batting and backing from my long armer. Unless I have a specific backing I want then I will bring. To me it makes my life easier to just give the quilt top to them. Pick my backing and batting from you and be done. It is less for me to store in my quilt room. I do like my extra pieces from my quilt back when the quilter is done. I will sometimes use it for binding. Great video. Thank you ❤

This was such a wonderful video. Thank you for all of the great information as well as sharing the beautiful quilts! I have started buying wide-backs when I see one I like. I think your idea of offering the wide-back as well as the batting for clients is excellent. I do have two quilt shops that are each only about 10-15 miles from me and I have split my long-arm jobs between them. If my quilt is on the smaller side then I sometimes will do straight-line quilting on my domestic machine. But as I get more into quilting, I am finding that I want to spend my time piecing a quilt top rather than quilting it. I hope to be able to send a quilt to you at some point, and I feel that I would want the batting and backing from you unless I had a specific fabric that I desired for the back. This option would help save on mailing expense. As far as the left over backing fabric, I would probably want it to use for my binding as I enjoy doing the binding. (Just my initial thoughts.). Happy quilting and thank you so much for sharing so much quilty goodness with all of us!!

Thanks so much for the review of the new Binding tool. I also have the other one--bought it when it 1st came out & watched every video I could find But I still feel frustrated using it. Just must not work with my brain! So I will try out this new Binding tool & see if maybe I can get the Squirrel Brain engaged. I love to see your Client's quilts & the quilting chosen. I agree with your comments on the 108s--I will make a scrappy back if I am making a gift quilt from fabric I don't want in my stash--then I try to use up every bit in the back. BTW I use the Cat suction Magnet thingy on my sewing machine to hold my scissors--works great! LOVE your videos.

No spring in Eastern Canada yet. It snowed today. Great video. I am a fan of wide back fabric for backing. I do find the available patterns a bit limited though. I think a white on white would be a great backing to carry that would go with most quilts.

So happy to have discovered your channel this am. My only concern with wide backings are the few I have encountered that the dye runs. After having a black I used run into my quilt top I do test all of the darker colours before I use them.

Great video. Thanks for sharing the quilts. Your quilting is beautiful. I have never used a long armer. I either do straight walking foot or big stitch hand quilting. Yes to wide backing. Not interested in piecing and so much easier for you to carry, along with batting. Wouldn’t be interested in the scraps (I don’t think)…I guess it would just depend on the fabric used.

Yes I think so! I used mine to wrap up a sleeping bag too. I could not find it on FQS website (it may have been exclusive to the Sew Sampler Box), but I'll keep checking.

Hi Michelle. I'm assuming you're talking about the Sew Scrappy Spools pattern. I'm sorry if I gave the impression that this was a free pattern. I have gone back through the video and I can't find where I say that but I apologize if that is the idea that comes across. I purchased my pattern through Fat Quarter Shop as a PDF and printed it on my computer instead of ordering the paper version. Sorry for the confusion.

As with all fabric, there is a wide range of quality. I would buy the best that you can afford.
