After two decades as one of the most beloved and enduring musicals on the stage, Wicked makes its long-awaited journey to the big screen as a spectacular, generation-defining cinematic event this holiday season.
Wicked, the untold story of the witches of Oz, stars Emmy, Grammy and Tony winning powerhouse Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Broadway’s The Color Purple) as Elphaba, a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power, and Grammy-winning, multi-platinum recording artist and global superstar Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart.
The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and forge an unlikely but profound friendship. Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda's unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power, while Elphaba's determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences on her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The film also stars Oscar® winner Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University’s regal headmistress Madame Morrible; Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers) as Fiyero, a roguish and carefree prince; Tony nominee Ethan Slater (Broadway’s Spongebob Squarepants, Fosse/Verdon) as Boq, an altruistic Munchkin student; Marissa Bode in her feature-film debut as Nessarose, Elphaba’s favored sister; and pop culture icon Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.
The cast of characters includes Pfannee and ShenShen, two conniving compatriots of Glinda played by Emmy nominee Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and Bronwyn James (Harlots), and a new character created for the film, Miss Coddle, played by Tony nominee Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman).
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), Wicked is the first chapter of a two-part immersive, cultural celebration. Wicked Part Two is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 26, 2025.
Wicked is produced by Marc Platt (La La Land, The Little Mermaid), whose films, television shows and stage productions have earned a combined 46 Oscar® nominations, 58 Emmy nominations and 36 Tony nominations, and by multiple Tony winner David Stone (Kimberly Akimbo, Next to Normal), with whom Platt produced the blockbuster Wicked stage musical. The executive producers are David Nicksay, Stephen Schwartz and Jared LeBoff.
Based on the bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked is adapted for the screen by the stage production’s book writer Winnie Holzman and by legendary Grammy and Oscar® winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. The Broadway stage musical is produced by Universal Stage Productions, Marc Platt, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.

I saw Wicked for the first time this year for my 31st birthday with my sister. And we both absolutely loved it. And seeing this makes me so happy because it was exactly like I dreamed it looked like on the big screen. I am in tears watching this. I cannot wait to see this.

This really is film history. Wicked is one of the most beautiful stories I have witnessed and was lucky enough to see it on broadway. Some movies you just know will be memorable and groundbreaking and this is going to be one of them.

I remember when I first fell in love with musicals and discovered Wicked. My mom bought me tickets to see it and I cried the whole time. I have waited what feels like 18yrs now for this film to be made.
I never saw the original Broadway musical, but I have heard the songs. My mom loves the play a lot. I am so excited to see this first part of the adaptation. I hope the film ends with "Defying Gravity", like how the first act ends.

“I’m going to take such great care of her” that made me cry🥲🩷🫧 I love love love Galinda (the Ga is silent😉) and I new Ariana would do great but seeing this I think she is going to be better then great!!! And Cynthia Erivo, oh man, you can tell that she was extremely blessed by getting to do this role💚🧹🥹

I'm like in tears right now, I was so obsessed with this musical when I was 11, and all of those feelings are suddenly coming back, Aaaaaaaaah!
On my 30th birthday 6 years ago, my mum got me a surprise present, and it was tickets to see Wicked on stage in Edinburgh, I always wanted to go see it, and I finally did, and it was incredible and beautiful, the set and the costumes were wow, but the music, the music made me feel myself, that’s why I love listening to music, it also help me to focus, I so can’t wait to see this movie, hoping I get the same feeling I did, when I went to see it on stage
Wicked was my first musical ever, and I`m still obsessed with it!
I'm a grown up theatre kid, and my daughter loved going to see local high school shows from a young age. In 2020 I was going to take her to see Frozen as her first professional show, but COVID hit and it all shut down. Then, in late 2021 we got tickets for me to take her to see Wicked just before Christmas of that year. On my way home from work hours before the show, my wife called me. She got an email from Playhouse Square that the performance that night was cancelled due to illness in the cast. I walked in the door and there was my then nine year old daughter, having already done her makeup and all dressed up and ready to go. My heart absolutely shattered and I couldn't say a word. The look on my face told her it all. She was beside herself. She got tickets for Frozen from Santa and that was her first professional show the following summer. She has since seen Aladdin, Hamilton, and Six as well. Now 12 years old, she still lists Wicked at the top of her list for shows she wants to see. We are counting the days until Thanksgiving weekend and the chance to go see the first part of the movie!

My heart breaks for her, I hope you can take her soon! I’m in Southern Ohio, but the first time I saw Wicked was at Playhouse Square in 2008. I was a theater kid, and had been obsessed with the OBC recording, so my parents got me tickets for Christmas for my mom and I to go together. But there was a blizzard that day (because of course there was, March in Ohio 🙄) so what should have been about a 3 hour drive turned into much, much longer. We made it safely, but missed almost half of the first act. Since then, I’ve seen it several times on tour, and finally got to see it on Broadway with my mom on October 1 last year (so just barely in the 20th anniversary month!) I really truly hope you get to take your daughter soon! I know the tour is currently in Grand Rapids through June 2, but no idea how far of a drive/how feasible that would be for you.
The show that inspired my love for musical theatre 💜 I cannot wait for this movie ugh
I’m with Ariana and Cynthia. This show is so personal, you never forget the first time you saw it. How the director speaks about it is the essence of the show. I’ve always wanted a movie so people who wouldn’t otherwise have access to it on a stage could experience it too.
So excited to return to the land of Oz in Wicked!

EXCUSE ME!!! This is amazing. As a life long fan of the musical, to see the heart you guys are putting into this, damn man, y’all are really killing the game! I cannot wait to see it. Also, the tears flowing when they got the parts and Cynthia detailing her gratitude, IT WAS TOO MUCH 😭😭😭😭

It’s so inspiring to have seen Ari through the years in multiple interviews talk about how this was her dream role. Just like magic, she wanted it, she got it 👸🏻

I have never had the pleasure of getting to see the Broadway musical. But in high school we got to the sing a melody of songs from the musical. I wounded up listening to the soundtrack and absolutely fell in love with the songs. I have been so excited when I found out this was being made into a movie and I'll finally get to see it.

@@ericoswald8089 that's definitely not true. Ariana knows the in and outs of Wicked. This has been her dream ever since she first saw Kristin Chenoweth play Glenda on Broadway when she was a child! It's what made her want to become an actress and singer and Kristen the woman who helped bring Wicked to what it is today praised Ariana for her portrayal of Glenda. Who would you pick to replace Ariana for the role of Glenda so we can see how educated you are on the personality and mannerisms of Glenda?

Act 1 of Wicked has 11 songs and Act 2, not counting reprises or finales, has 7. Altogether, Steve Schwartz wrote 18 original songs that made it into the original musical. Sure, he thought of other ideas that didn't make it originally, but he came out with some of the best tunes we ever heard. If they made a Tony Award for "Best Song in a Musical", I believe Defying Gravity would be the winner. But more to the point of the songs in the film... Steve said he is planning on including 4 new songs. 3 of which are brand-new titles and one will be an unused song repurposed for the movie. I don't know which unused song it will be, but he did say that Part 2 will have two new songs to go with the 7 original songs with the 2 reprises and the finale (basically, the 10 songs from Act 2) to bring it to 12 songs. This may lead me to wonder if Part 1 will add a new song and an unused song to bring the total of Act 1 songs to 13. But you know what I think the musical should do once the movies come out? I believe the show should add the new songs from the movies. Nevertheless, are you all excited to see how this smash musical will turn out as a film after being discussed for 20 years?

There are only 2 new songs in the film, and both in the 2nd part. 1 each for Glinda and Elphaba. No unused song in the film, unless its over the credits

I saw the show for the first time when I was ten, and that was ten years ago. This year, I'm gonna be turning 20. I'm actually tearing up seeing this footage. My birthday is actually two days after Thanksgiving this year, so this will be like a birthday present for me. And it's gonna be something wonderful to see one of my all-time favourite musicals brought to life on the silver screen. 👠🧹🌈

I refuse to see these films due to the casting of Ariana. She garbles all the words to her songs - cannot anunciate to save her life. I can hardly understand any lyrics she sings in her pop songs. She also doesn't have the range. And she has dead eyes. I don't care if she acted on Broadway or TV when she was a kid - I had high hopes for her playing Penny Pingleton in "Hairspray! Live" on Fox and she couldn't act at all; like watching a zombie. She has NO comedy chops. John Chu COULD have done a world wide casting search for the perfect Galinda/Glinda, but instead we're getting stunt casting. This musical already has the built-in tween female audience - it didn't need a pop star to try and bring them in. Instead, my all time favorite musical is going to be ruined by someone who should NOT be playing the role. I will wait for this to come out to a streaming service that I'm already paying for - I don't want to pay money to watch Ariana destroy this role.
