Why Your iPhone Stops Charging At 80%

Ғылым және технология

If you’ve left your iPhone plugged in overnight only to find it at 80% in the morning instead of 100%, you were probably left frustrated and wondering why. Well, there are a few potential reasons. Starting with temperature.

    Yup, all the above has happened to me with this situation. I currently have the 15 pro and I actually use the charging limit every time I charge now, but not how you would expect. If I'm in the situation where my phone has reached a critical point in where I need to charge it up during the day, I have a power bank and a dongle with which I use the phone while it is charging, or trickle charged depending on the situation. I put it to 80% limit and leave it there, until bedtime when I switch it to the wall charger and another cable. While switching, I change the charging option to optimize charging and it goes up to 100% by the morning and I'm ready for the next day of usage. That's a typical day for me with this phone, but there are other situations where I have to charge it up without using the 80% limit and I forgot to switch it from optimized to 80% limit once by accident and it activated optimized charging and stayed at 81% for a while, with my power bank and dongle in tow.

    One trick I’ve learned is to set an alarm on your iPhone. Even with battery optimization turned “on” your battery will charge fully to 100% by the time your alarm is set to go off instead of stopping at 80%. So if you plug in your iPhone at 1 AM and set your alarm to go off at 6 AM then your battery will be at 100% by 6 AM.

    Incorrect about 80%... When set to charge to 80% limit, iPhone will charge itself passed 80% (to full) periodically to have a proper calibration of the battery capacity. It says it itself when you enable this feature, and it happens once every 1-2 weeks for me. The video said iPhone will never exceed 80% charge when it's set to that setting. Never say never ;) I have my iPhone 15 Pro Max set to 80% limit and love it, as when I charged it to 100% it lasted me 3 days!! 1-2 days of use at 80% is plenty. I actually really like this feature; it’s 99% accurate no matter what I do each day. One day I’ll plug it in with 60% at 11pm; fully charged by 7a when I take it off the charger after waking up and doing my morning routine. The next, I’ll be out late and use my phone a lot but I have to get up in the morning for an appointment; plug it in with 2% at 2am and it’s fully charged again by 8 when I have to get up for my appointment. Granted all of this is in my calendar and alarms are set on my phone too. So maybe the people who have problems don’t use their phone as an alarm or calendar? I even unplug my phone at times when it’s holding at 80%, plug it back in a few minutes later, and it just holds at 80%.

    Contrary to belief, you should only charge your phone if it’s between 20 and 80 per cent anyway. This allows for battery longevity and technically does not count as a full charging cycle. The more cycles the less your battery is going to last in the long term. I actually use the Shortcuts app to vocally inform me when the battery needs and no longer needs charging between 20 and 80%.

I found this out one time by leaving my iPad on a windowsill to charge when it was about 20° one night back when we had old drafty windows. I woke up and my iPad had only charged about 10% more than when I plugged it in the night before.

    Why won't Apple allow users to set their own parameters? In settings it says "iPhone learns from your charging routine", but I don't have a fixed routine. Why can't we have a simple toggle to NEVER charge beyond 80% except if I toggle that setting off? Because Apple wants us to destroy our battery and sell us a replacement, of course. How "green" of them. I'm sick of companies trying to decide what's better for us (such as Apple with the battery charge limit, or deciding to slow down phones instead of letting us decide wether we want to preserve the battery or let the CPU run at maximum speed, or actually really disable Bluetooth without re-enabling it automatically the next day without asking me if it should do that) or even what we like or are likely to buy (like Google/KZread spying on everything we do, in order to show us so-called "targeted ads" for things we could not care less about.

    One thing that wasn't mentioned in the video: for every 10% away from 100% you charge your phone, it reduces the wear on the battery by half, so charging to 80% will make the battery last a total of 3.2 times longer (once the reduction in charging is factored in). I'm really glad that Apple implemented an 80% charge limit option into their iPhone 15. Before then, Sony was the only manufacturer (as far as I'm aware) that had this. I've used Google phones (Nexus and Pixel) for a decade and actually bought a device called a Chargie that sits in between my phone and the charger and stops the charging once it reaches 80% for this exact purpose. I switched to Sony last month after my Pixel 5a broke, and Sony's one of the few makers that puts a very high emphasis into how long their phones' batteries last.

  • @IvanITpro

    @IvanITpro

    It will just lose it's full capacity faster when you charge to 100% every time. There have been studies and the best time to charge and discharge batteries is when the lowest charge is at 30% and charge max to 80% - that's any Lithium Ion battery, which is like in everything these days. Think about it, when batteries are recharged, the electrons are moved from one side to another. It's easy to move 80% or up to 80% of electrons from one side to another, but difficult to move/push/squeeze the remaining 20% to max 100% That's why it slows down the charging passed 80%, and this is what causes some electrons to just die and never be able to be charged or discharged again, so the capacity of the battery dies/lowers with it. Hope it makes sense ;)

    You'll lose 5 - 10% of your battery capacity every year, if you replace your phone every 2-3 years - who cares? If once every 5 years, might want to prolong the battery capacity for longer than, so charge to 80% most days and to 100% when you know you'll need it

I found my iPhone over 80% randomly a couple of times already, even with "80% limit" feature turned on. It seems that this feature doesn't always wrk as expected.😕 So disappointing...... Once I didn't use it for many hours, so I left it plugged with the feature turned on, and the next time I grabbed it was at 100........ Anyone knows why this could happen?

  • @IvanITpro

    Yeah, you missed the message Apple showed you when you first enabled this feature. The video is incorrect about 80%... When set to charge to 80% limit, iPhone will charge itself passed 80% (to full) periodically to have a proper calibration of the battery capacity. It says it itself when you enable this feature, and it happens once every 1-2 weeks for me. The video said iPhone will never exceed 80% charge when it's set to that setting, that's wrong. I have my iPhone 15 Pro Max set to 80% limit and love it, as when I charged it to 100% it lasted me 3 days!! 1-2 days of use at 80% is plenty.

    i can't overemphasize how bad iPhone is in that regard. In Sony we've had the same feature back in 2015 with Stamina. But since 2020 it became the way it has to be: you can command your phone exactly when to be charged to a 100% to protect battery. Apple can't still do that and i don't know why people even considering to buy them. Sony with 0% marketshare do that, Apple should be ashamed

  • @andyH_England

    No phone does that at the moment, I take your word Sony still does. Instead, phones use AI to stop charging at 80% overnight and top up to 100% based on when your alarm goes off. On the iPhone 15 Pros, you can limit charging to 80% max. Samsung used to limit to 85% but now copied Apple at 80% as that is the optimum.
