Do DAWs crash? Yes they do and sometimes it might be a bug. After all, even after the most rigerous QC and beta testing, some software does ship with bugs.
You might think this is shoddy and shouldn’t happen, but when you consider all the hardware and components used in computers, plus software permutations, it’s nigh on impossible to find every single possible thing that might cause software to crash.
This is often why bugs are found when released to the public, the software has gone from being tested by a few hundred to being used by a few hundred thousand.
However, one of the most common reasons for a DAW crashing is an incompatible plugin.

In 30 years of Protools, I have learned to save after EVERY edit.
It is always a plugin and sometimes it takes a while before you realise which one exactly. Last one was Scaler after an Ableton minor version update... then Scaler released an update 6 weeks later, solved. It's often an interaction between plugins and a newer update of a DAW. Not always directly in sync for unknown reasons...

Thx, this make great sense! What if you can't remove plug ins from your folder? I downloaded a "pack" of free plug ins from a reputable company and the total space was over 1gig worth of plug ins.. i can't use any of them because of some reason ( registration perhaps). Thx
I guess I've been lucky because I've never had crashing issues with any of the DAWs I've used until the last several versions of Studio One Pro. This isn't a bash Presonus comment because I love Studio One but for the life of me I can't seem to get it to stop crashing. They've actually built in crashing investigation tools but I've yet to find a definitive cause. Frustrating.
The komplete kontrol update has rendered my DAW useless. All my previous saved projects won't load now and it closes my DAW immediately. I have no idea what to do.

As a Bitwig user, crashing just isn't a thing in our world really, at worst the offending plugin crashes in its own sandbox, Bitwig tells you it did and you reload just the plugin that crashed. Bitwig is like one of those Boston Dynamics robotic mules , you can keep kicking it and it won't ever fall over.
I don’t know but my mac just can’t handle native instruments kontact… i just trie to load up 3 instruments but he just crashes logic. I think my mac is just not good enough for music project.

Acid always crashes & it's plug-ins. Reaper never crashes. At least for me.
