Why your Campervan should have Winter tyres - even when there’s no snow

Why your Campervan should have Winter tyres - even when there’s no snow
Why you NEED Winter Tyres - Even without snow - The only way to be safe? In your VW Transporter Campervan / California
Winter Van Life can be great, but you need to change your flip flops to better more appropriate footwear and the same is for your alloys rubber.
You have spent a significant amount on kitting out your VW Transporter Camper Van or California or even nay other van, giving you a warm safe environment and you need to make sure you give just as much attention to the safety aspects. (I touch on safety ESSENTIALS in a previous video)
Having tyres (or tires) that are suitable for the climate you are in can have a huge affect on safety.
Choosing a tyre is more than just looking at the size, the price and the brand. Consideration must be given for the season, the temperatures and the roads you drive on or even off road use.
Speak to your local tyre fitter on the options available to you and make an informed purchase.
Your tyres are the only contact point with the road, therefore you need to ensure that these are giving you the most grip as possible, so you can stay on the road and your stopping distances are the best they can be. Snow, slush, Ice and cold wet road are much harder to stop on.
Most of the big tyre manufacturers make summer tyres, winter tyres and all season tyres, so you will have plenty of options.
The big brands are Michelin, Bridgestone, Pirelli, Dunlop, Continental, Goodyear, Avon, Hankook, Yokohama.
Three good All Weather / All Season Tyres are
Michelin Cross Climate
Bridgestone Weather Control
Continental All Season Contact
Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons
Ensure your van or car has the best rubber possible

Slowly turning it into a stealth camper van / day van with bed. I will also need something for cooking, cooling, sleeping, drinking ?? Choices to be made.
I have lots more to do though, I have a new electrical system, using Victron components and a Lithium LIFEPO4 battery, so I obviously need to install some power devices. I have a new sound system, with Focal speakers and ibus 2.1 amp, Playstation PS4, which will be removable, TV's on headrests.
Lots for me to look forward too and it would be nice to take you on the journey.

Do you change your tyres for winter?

Winter tyres beat all season, when it comes to overall winter performance and STOPPING DISTANCES Is my experience in my 2017 Vivaro Van and repeated tests show (check out KZread)... I Bought a set of winter tyres after getting to know about them from a colleague who always got into work after driving 15 miles each way from home to work, whilst some drivers with only 2 to 5 miles were at best very late into work. The colleague who did the 30 mile round trip had to travel from Buxton in the High Peak. I bought a spare set of rims so switching from summer to winter and back cost about £25 each time. Use my 6 year old steel rims for winter use and have a set of rims for summer tyres.

I found a problem of finding someone to swap my winters and summers. Nobody wanted to just swap tyres without selling new ones. Luckily I found one garage near me who would do it. I’m going all season now I’ve changed my car which has come with budget summer tyres. They’ve improved so much that I believe they’re now the best option in the south of the UK.

All seasons do seem to be the best option for the South. Our temperatures and road conditions aren’t as extreme as further North.

Michelin Agilis cross climate! Hands down the best all season tires. Designed for light commercial vehicles and there are numerous great reviews, some from fleet vehicles owners etc. I have them and are brilliant.

Been considering the same. Actually got stuck in some mud over Easter on a wet field, had to be towed off. How do they perform in mud?

I run all my vehicles on MIchelin CrossClimate 2s. Brilliant all round tyre. Effective in 95% of conditions. I've used them extensively throughout Europe including Swiss winters. Obviously at altitude and in very poor conditions the locals use full snow tyres.

I always used to swap winter and summer tyres on my car, I used to buy part warn winter ones and just keep them for one winter, the summer ones lasted longer as well with taking them off. Last winter I changed for the cross climate tyres and kept them on all winter and this summer and I would have got this winter out of them if I hadn’t swapped the car for my first van, I will be getting some cross climates for the van, I live of the tops of the Pennines so we do get a lot of poor weather in winter

Just about to fit Michelin CC2s on my wife’s Subaru forester will fit the same on out T5 when it needs tyres, My Hilux has BF Goodrich A/T KO2s fitted these are also a good alternative year round tyre with the 3 peak mountain Snowflake symbol signifying legal winter use in Europe.

Yea, I agree completely. Grew up learning to drive in a country with proper winters - always with effective all-season tyres. Took just one dangerous snowy winter in Southeast UK to decide I’d never drive on summer tyres again. I’ve bought several sets of Cross Climates over the last 7+ years. Including on my T6. Haven’t let me down yet.

The correct tyre makes a huge difference. I’m doing mine soon and was looking at those Michelins, it’s between those and the Continental All Season Contact. Will speak to my tyre guy 😀
