Exactly it's an M Light car and not a top of the range 'M' otherwise it would be called an M1 and as we all know that doesn't exist within the 1 series range other than the old 1M

- handles worse - more expensive/ higher MRP - cheap japanese AISIN gearbox in place for the good german ZF transmission in the old 135i/140i with longer reaction times and less capable Max NM in tuning perspectives - less power (306 in stead of 320/326/340hp in the precedessors) - less cylinders - less sound in db(a) - no RWD option - bulkier look (like he said 2 series caravan or lowered x2) BMW: "People will love this."

I personally don’t like the new shape, it’s looks kind of naff. Much prefer the old shape of I’m honest.

This is a really dumb review. any car that has more than 1 number after it is not a real M car jesus. You should know this as an M3 previous owner.

It’s not an M car, it’s an M Performance model. There is a big difference.

1. The M135I isn't intended to be a full fat "M" Car as you're making it out to be and never has been. It's an M-Lite. 2. It doesn't have a new engine, just a revised B48. The same engine that can be found in the 125i, 228i, and 230i etc. 3. It doesn't have more power than either of the two previous cars. The previous M135I had 320 bhp, and the m140i had 340. I think you've seriously mistaken where this car falls in the BMW lineup, mainly referring back to point 1. It's not supposed to be a full M car that'll blow your socks off. Rather a 1 series with the M touches here and there.

I have just bought one of these and love it. It is comfortable, refined, fast when needed and sticks the road like glue. I traded in a 2017 M140i so give it try for yourself. If you are put off by this scratter looking semi middle class arsewipe then you do need your head looking at. One thing I won’t be doing is watching another one of his videos. But, each to their own.

How's the exhaust note when driving? heard is loses the crackles you get on startup.

Done a bit of research have you? Then you should stop calling it an M car as you should know it isn't an M car.

Most of the reviewers say it drives brilliantly, this is about the 1st user review that says the opposite. Strange

So little research here: Not an M Car Not a new engine - B48 been around for ages Not more powerful than outgoing M140i I’ve driven one, don’t know what yours was set up as, but for me this drove better than an M340i

I love the new M135i, can't wait for the M140i though!

Currently use the m135i as my daily alongside a db11 as a Weekender. In all honesty, It does the job of being a daily brilliantly. It has a lovely ride and brill tech/practicality. And generally when you feel like playing around with it, the thing can let you have a good time.

It was a different type of xdrive. Previous 1 series was a rwd platform and with x drive option it also was still predominately an rwd car. So it was shuffling the power to the front if needed. The new car is the other way round.

So glad I got the 3.0 M135i rear wheel drive.

I had a 2011 128i coupe with a manual. RWD, NA inline 6, and amazing to drive. Maybe someday I’ll get a 135i (e82) but I’d never buy a FWD BMW personally

It may be 40k but atleast it comes with a proper coat of paint...

As someone who works for BMW I'm glad that they will no doubt be taking you off of the list of people they will give cars to on loan. You don't have a clue what you're talking about! The m135i IS NOT AN M CAR. You can't compare the price of it to used m cars, used amg cars and supercars like the r8 as these are not in the same category, none of those cars are hot hatchbacks.

It’s just his opinion and taste. Autocar recently rated the M135i above the AMG 35 in a supertest. They reckoned it handled better than the Merc. So there you go.

I've hated the new 1 series ever since i got to know it will be FWD

BMW Audi and Mercedes, have ended up making the exact same car. Awd 300bhp hot hatches. There's no individuality anymore.

I bought one (M135i) and I was under no illusion that i WASN’T buying a ‘M’ car! A car that has a sporty engine and some nice ‘M’ styling! Don’t let one persons opinion put you off, I’ve had many a sport car including ‘M’ cars and I think this is a well rounded car in every aspect. Try one yourself and have a look at it in person before making a decision based on one review! And I’m a country bumpkin that knows how to drive on country roads!!!

It’s amazing how people are so resistant to change. This is a great car inside out! S3 & A35 are using the same formula & people love them! BMW must stay with the times to stay competitive. A majority of 1 series drivers didn’t even know it was rwd!

I'm still KINDA waiting to see what the coupe will be like, but I won't hold my breath too long. Glad I took the Plunge on an M240i last year. The b58 is amazing

'No front end grip' Whilst almost every other serious motoring journalist has pointed this out as one of the cars strengths.

Max Spencer funny enough I rang for you yesterday as I needed the car reprogramming due an erroneous service message and now the adblue countdown has frozen in 8000 mile range and 0 fill! Wondered if there was a reset?

I've just ordered a m135i with Tech pack, Pro pack, pan roof, 19"wheels, sapphire black metallic paint with red leather and for the car alone came to just under £40,000. Also as others have mentioned this isn't supposed to be a full M car, its a hot hatchback for the wider market. You want sideways driving then come up with the 60,000+ the new m2 competition will cost. I'd like to see the spec's on this car and see how you came to those figures because the basic m135i comes to around £37,000 and I can't see any of the extras that woukd bring it up to £42,000+

I appreciate this perspective. While it's no roadtest, it goes to highlight a car enthusiasts actual experience with a car that has rather peculiar looks and one that simply isnt leaning towards the entertaining side of the hot hatch scale. Sure, it's mature and upmarket...do you WANT one though? I suspect not.

Totally agree. Bmw made this FWD because cost and the fact that the owners themselves didn’t know or care which wheels do what. So they made this hideous appliance of a car and slapped on some sportiness or whatever. The car is as good as any car but that’s the problem, it’s just as any car...

Paul, did you experience any torque steer when on it? I had one for a few hours last weekend and noticed that the car torque steered, was filming at the time and my reaction was hilarious. Hopefully reviewing an M3/M4 to bring back the love for M.

Respect for your honesty mate. Bmw should never have a haldex system. The only thing that seperates bmws from the rest is not the 0-60 it's like you said, the 6 cyl rear wheel drive biased experience. Again, respect for put yourself out there. Integrity is everything.

Massively gone up my estimations. Not saying it's unbelievable or 'the ultimate daily' as every other car these days. Not saying what needs to be said to get more press cars but actually honest opinion

Great honest review Paul, I can't believe just how bad this car looks. I have a 2013 M135i and i really can't think of anything i would want from the new car to add to mine? (Maybe just the fuel bill😂). BMW have certainly lost the plot with regards to going to a 4 pot from the beautiful sound/performance of the straight 6 rear wheel drive animal.

Finally someone actually speaks the truth about the car, rather than doing exactly what bmw would want

But the *New 1* is a dissapointment 😔 who in there right mind would buy 1 of these when every other small car for £40k is better.. you could probably even find a 5 year old i8 for £45k with low mileage.. 🤔 this new M135i should not have an M badge like you said.. there are a few new gadgets but fuck that.. I want a decent car..

To be honest I’m happy some youtubers are becoming more critical of cars. For too long manufacturers have enjoyed exposure and just given out cars for people to be seen in and post on their instagrams whilst saying nothing tangible. Critiquingis the only way cars will get better and it’s more important than ever with this downsizing trend.

To break it short... M stands for Motorsport and that car doesnt feel like a motorsport car. I guess this happened because in Germany we are all about ECO and someone said "but... we need to make an M version, so people that need a little city car can go fast on the Autobahn" . At some point they might had a talk about "ok, should we change more things to make the value even worse?" and they thought.... nahh... doesnt make any sense.

I really respect you for being so honest and not being like the majority of KZread people who are licking BMWs arse and pretending that this is actually as good if not better than the previous 140👍

Props for the honest review! Good video and good work but let me remind you of some things. First of all its not an M car. BMW build this car to normal people that dont want to go sideways all the time. And its just an M135i. If you want an M car you can have an M2, M3, M4, M5, M8!! The M1 is not on the list... Its a car built with a purpose in mind and that purpose is daily driving. I bought an 116d because on my country its almost impossible to have an M135 without spending 60k€ which is too much for our market. I am very pleased with the car. Sure it has low bhp but it does the job and its fun to drive. And another thing, you can change the "BMW call" to another word that doesnt trigger the assistant all the time. You say you drove 600 miles with the car but i believe you didnt spent enough time to know its true potential that is daily driving. You spent every second trying to find something that is not there because its not a car to go sideways...Its a daily. And its more fun that its competitors.

It's basically the new 5door mini cooper s with a BMW badge

Don't agree with it being an M car, it's M light, big difference.

Yes, you might be able to buy a 1 year old M2 for 2k less but chances are, if you’re looking for something like the new 1 Series you don’t want an M2. My dad has the M140i and as his next step I suggested the M2 but he doesn’t want one as it’s not what he’s looking for. Secondly, it’s NOT an M car. Thirdly, I was actually surprised by the M135i when I drove it. I had really low expectations and wasn’t looking forward to it but I kinda liked it. Admittedly, it’s not as good as the old car but it’s by no means a bad car.
