With using the wrong resources from the start, having unrealistic expectations, and little self belief. Any language will be hard. Hopefully this video can help those who've struggled with learning another language. The program I mentioned at the start of the video (Pimlseur): offers.pimsleur.com/free-trial-1408 I've used it to start every language I've ever taught myself, so I highly recommend it, and geniunely love the program. Cool thing is I use to have to buy it in lesson bundle CDs which was very costly. However since last month, they've started a monthly subscription that is incredibly affordable in comparison. Definitely give it a look.

If you’re a Neurotypical or hyper exit then there are no unrealistic expectations. If you’re dyslexic then the fantasy that you might be able to read and write in your first language is an unrealistic expectation. And the idea that you might somehow learn a foreign language is complete delusion.

@WRLD Probably because you aren't actively thinking about the other language. When you're a language learner, you're often obsessed with learning that language at least for a period of time (though this may not happen with everyone). All that's on your mind for that time is learning the language, memorizing words in that language, etc. You think about learning it for most of the day. When you think about something a lot, then it can show up in your dreams.

im taking a french course at university for the second year and the structure has me so frustrated.. i have a french boyfriend and i am creole-french american, and so naturally ive wanted to become fluent to not only show him that i want to be integrated with his family and culture on that level, but feel a sense of identity and purpose if that makes any sense. we've been together for almost 3 years now and ive felt terribly that im not as fluent as i want to be, and am often ashamed and discouraged, but to see his eyes light up when we do text and talk in french and when he corrects my pronunciations and expresses how happy he is that i am even taking the time to make it a priority despite my confidence in it sometimes, makes me so happy as well, and his family loves me even though im not a native or fluent speaker, and I want to keep that in mind and passion to keep it up but it's such a vicious cycle where i tend to forget all of that.. and i dont want to forget that anymore. im so glad ive found your video today. i have some french activities and a french exam due midnight, and i need to get started

Abriana Holliday the school method of teaching languages is awful because they scare you and confuse you with grammar on day 1. Best way to learn a language is like a child, you have to start speaking right away and don’t worry about reading and writing until down the road. That’s why Pimsleur is so good. It has you speaking and listening on day 1.

As someone who grew up with both Spanish and English it might be a bit easier to learn other languages. However is my case even though grew up around the Spanish language I’m not confident in speaking it because my mom just assumed I would just know what she was saying and just mimic her, but I’m not going to speak something I don’t what the word is (yes I have even asked what some words were and she never told me because again she just assumed I knew what it was). I know Spanish just not all that well and it’s sad I can’t speak with my grandma because she’s the same like me except she can’t speak English very well.

I'm learning Spanish in school the only part I'm having trouble with in the stem changes, more specifically the one with letter "e" because it turns into "i" and "ie" at the same time but you only use one of them in one word and only one is correct The only advice I got for that part is "that you have to know it by heart" which isn't very helpful

I have been studying Japanese on and off for like 4 years and one of the things I would have to say is pay attention to pitch intonation when you're learning. I didn't even learn that was a thing until last year because no one had even mentioned it anywhere before and I was about to pull all the hair out of my head. Also learn hiragana and katakana. I started with hiragana and I learned it the old fashioned way with flash cards and writing it a million times. It's been apart of me for so long sometimes I forget that I had to learn it in the first place sometimes and I can't imagine life without it. When you go to learn kanji, learn the radicals first, trust me it's a lot easier to recognize/memorise kanji when you know the radicals. Also it's extremely helpful being able to distinguish the radicals when you want to look up a kanji you don't know in a dictionary. As for grammar, Tae Kim's grammar guide guide is free and it's basically what launched me on my Japanese learning journey. It'll give you most of the essentials. Listening to spoken Japanese is important to and something I've found helpful more recently is listening something over and over again and looking up a knew word I don't know each time. I've learned words this way and then all the sudden see it being used everywhere and its really cool. Also I'd get Anki, get the 2000 most used Japanese words and just start learning them. Jisho.org is a Japanese to English dictionary and I usually use that for looking up words. HiNative is really good for asking questions to native speakers. Also, stick with it everyday. I've heard so many people say consistentcy is key and I can't tell you how true that is. As I I said before I've been learning it off and on for about four years and I should be waaaay ahead of what I am currently, but I've gone large chunks in-between where I haven't even looked at a word in Japanese or watched anything Japanese and its set me back a lot. Like I went almost a whole year without touching the language because I just felt like I wasn't progressing and was busying myself with something else instead. Well I got back into it this year and turns out I had progressed a lot more than I'd thought. I was surprised at how much I actually understood and retained, even though I'd lost some of what I learned before. Makes me wonder how much I'd know now if I'd kept with it that year I didn't. But yeah, that's life. And that's some advice from me :p

First, do you have a basic foundation in the language already? If yes, watch stuff in Vietnamese, if you have any Vietnamese TV shows that are on Netflix you’d like to watch, then watch those TV shows on there that have Vietnamese subs, and look up words you don’t know, and place them onto Anki. For info on how to “sentence mine,” look it up on Google. I recommend the site Refold on how to sentence mine. On how to operate Anki, look at it’s manual online, and read through it. If you don’t have a foundation yet, and is just starting in the language, I’d recommend to pay/pirate LingoDeer, do their Vietnamese course, then go on the internet to find some grammar guides, and go through them. For more vocab, you could go onto AnkiWeb and search up a basic Vietnamese vocab deck (if there is one). I may be adding more to this in the future, but for now, have fun learning.

Сейчас я изучаю японский. И я считаю, что kanji - это очень сложно. Кроме того, довольно сложно учить слова - все они кажутся одинаковыми. По твоему совету использую Pimsleur (а так же Lingodeer) - мне нравится. Но пока что я не определился с учебником. Pimsleur - хороший аудиокурс, но не всегда можно повторять фразы (например, в транспорте). Мне лень писать всё это по-английски. Проверим, насколько хорошо ты помнишь русский язык, если увидишь этот комментарий! =)

I learn whole sentences saying them aloud. 5 days - 300 repetitions per day at least. Later I don't need to translate. I know the meaning of words straight away like in my native language. And also I remember the meaning longer than by learning separate words. This method is called: chunking. It was a real game changer in my learning process and communication skills in English and other languages.😊
