Why You SHOULDN'T "Think Outside The Box" (Learn From The Beatles, Schoenberg & Burgers)

Ойын-сауық

There is one thing YOU can do to increase your creativity, and the power of your music & art. This is why you shouldn't "think outside the box".
Creativity is like non-Newtonian fluid. Something we can grasp for one second, but which can just as easily slip between our fingers the next. Technologies like DAWs give us endless artistic possibilities, however in this video I argue this may be detrimental.

This is episode 3 of a series called "Your World on Music". A series where I analyse how music shapes the world around us, and how you can use music, and the lessons learned through analysing it, as a valuable tool to improve aspects of your daily life.

A classic approach to painting is limiting your colour palette to, say, just 6 colours - and often that's just 2 variants of 2 colours, plus black/white. Too much choice takes you to messy chaos - while a limited palette can take you beautiful chaos.

Limitation can make people to understand things better, study everything so we can push it's limit to achieve greater results..

This is incredible! loved this video! absolutely relates to the classic phrase "less is more". I'm a drummer and I will find a way to limit myself with my music (and the band) to hopefully open a new door. this is a huge inspiration, thank you :)

Schoenberg is the actual example of thinking outside the box. But every madness requires a method, an artistic work needs cohesiveness and to be internally -hopefully externally too, but that isn’t a requirement- consistent.

Has anyone ever heard a 12-tone piece that doesn't sound horrible?

I believe 12-tone music is supposed to sound horrible. Btw there is an other Austrian composer, Josef Matthias Hauer, who invented another 12-tone method. His music sounds quite nice!

I think if you keep listening to 12-tone music it will start to make sense and not sound so horrible. You could argue it's a little bit like jazz, which is a genre that takes time to get used to and "understand" to actually enjoy. Of course, 12-tone music is a much more extreme example as a it forgoes the traditional framework of western music. We all have different tastes.

There are creative endeavors that not necessarily result in an artistic work. But reproductions are just reproductions, no matter if the medium is toast or burger grease, it’s just a reproduction, unless it’s remixed like in primer remixer example of Warhol.
