Why you should take a break: Prioritizing mental health in schools | Hailey Hardcastle | TEDxSalem

While not everyone has a diagnosed mental illness, every person has their own mental health with unique needs and challenges. It is time that we extend the same empathy and aid to mental health as we do to physical health. One of the best ways to end the stigma surrounding mental health is by spreading the idea that it is always ok to take a break for your mental wellbeing, especially for teens and students. Hailey Hardcastle is a freshman at the University of Oregon and a student mental health advocate. This year she was named one of Teen Vogues 21 under 21 most influential young people for her work on passing House Bill 2191, which allows students to take mental health days off from school. Hardcastle works with other teens nationwide to promote student advocacy and come up with creative solutions to teenage mental challenges. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

School system its completely outdated ( except in countries like Finland ).how much sense have study like 200 years ago when the world becomes unrecognizable year by year? The worst is now we have a severely high mental problems rate ( anxiety, depression ) and becomes worse day by day.we need a revolution,a new school system updated to the complex and ambiguous world of today.

Well how hard is it to be kind to yourself.... is it because you absolutely have no choice and have to keep pushing . Now you are suffering.... so now you see that you have to learn to pace yourself instead of making yourself feel like a horse that has been run into the ground . often when we give ourselves a little bit of time and space.... it somehow allows us to become more efficient and even create more time and space and creativity and joy . there's a right way to do things and a wrong way to do things.. have you never heard of the Middle Way.... don't be an extremist... be kind to yourself.... if we cannot be good to ourselves how can we be good to others. It's a little bit different if of course you are at a point in your life where you absolutely have no choice and have to keep working and are not able to get any breaks . but that is not a good way to live and I went through it for years . But to not take breaks when you have earned them and need them doesn't even make sense.... that is why it's called counterproductive . Please get the rest that you need and never feel guilty about it again . and most importantly do not let others make you feel guilty about it

A person needs to ask themself is this just a time in my life where I have to push and work really hard and there will be a payoff.... or am I just causing unnecessary harm for myself and making myself ill ? To feel guilty about a little needed rest break or vacation is insanity.... if a person is not going to be right in their mind how can they function ? Why would anybody feel guilty about a much-needed break or rest... is this abuse that is put on you people by others like a boss or a spouse or your family members ? Or are you just doing this to yourself and treating yourself like a dog.. why would anybody do that to themselves .... be kind to yourself .

I even remember there were a number of times he took me to the racetrack and even let me pick some of the horses . He would take me to the movies .... great memories there also . I came from a family of 7 kids . it was nice to get that quality time with my dad and those are some of my best memories with him . yeah when we were older we would ditch too, Haha.... those are also some really great memories .

This made me cry…My mental health was not taken seriously in high school and my teachers thought I was only trying to ditch and they stopped giving counsel and would send me back to class whenever I needed a break and talk to someone. I ended up attempting suicide and would be in and out of hospitals. When I had to eventually go back to school my condition still wasn’t taken seriously, so I decided to use drugs as a coping mechanism and almost completely dropped out of high school. I graduated over a year late after my mom pulled me from that high school and got me in to an alternative school that had a compassionate staff and all they wanted was for their students to get better. A lot of people were in my boat and I felt supported in a way public school could never do for me… 6 years later I am now in my 3rd semester of college with a 4.0 gpa and my mental health is at the best it’s ever been. It takes compassionate and caring individuals to be good teachers. This young woman is doing amazing things for the educational community!

I don't know about you, but here in France, people don't imagine that you can draw monsters and stickmens for a living. We have an orientation system, and three times I went to see them, and three times they redirected me wrongly for my future studies. I stopped listening to them at some point, because it was impossible! You're doing the right thing by keeping your children out of this orientation system in education. Most of the time, they don't even know half of the jobs they're talking about.

This video really resonated deeply with me as I also believe good mental health is the true key to success in every aspect of actively pursuing a career in medicine. Physical health for obvious reasons will always be at the forefront of what is considered more “serious” because a lot of acute illnesses can lead to tragic consequences and lifelong illnesses lead to a sequela of chronic complications and/or death that can be mitigated if caught early enough and treated responsibly before health effects are irreversible. Hailey makes amazing points that with suicide being the second leading cause of death in teenagers, mandating laws that require schools to designate a certain number of mental health days to students is a major step in the right direction. For some reason, it seems that the older we get, the need for mental health support seems less important. While schools/organizations/workplaces offer mental health support services and try to incorporate ways to ensure that mental health support is being implemented, the quality of these services is unfortunately lackluster. I believe at the graduate school level, our administrators have a duty to ensure the best mental health support. Programs such as medical school, law school, obtaining a PhD or whatever graduate level degree one is trying to obtain is a long and stressful journey. No one goes into these fields truly understanding the commitment and sacrifice one will have to make as much as we think we do; there is nothing that can prepare you for it. Medical schools need to allocate mental health days per organ system/block that are separate from the days off allocated for other things such as emergencies or physical health/sick days. I believe these should not be allocated based on a student’s standing either as some of these students may be near academic difficulty status because they are not able to get the mental support they need. You made an amazing point in your video stating that not everyone who needs mental health support has an official diagnosis and I agree that these supportive resources and days off should still be provided as a means to prevent worsening of any mental states.

If you’re able, please consider. (Colleges love home schoolers btw.) Go read ‘The Call of the Wild and Free’ by Ainsley Arment!

The long distance race analogy is really good! Because it's a way of thinking for people with mental health issues that allows them to rise up to accessions when they need to while letting them know that there is also times they need to relax and check in with them self, I love this concept!

This is a lovely idea but it would be so lovely if the schools initiated something like this. Not all parents recognise the importance of mental health, not all children are safe at home. It would be lovely to see a cozy space kids could be to have their mental health day at school but seperated from peers if they would like.

And then there is my school which is basically like "if u can't keep ur life together and are overwhelmed, you should stop coming here because it is to hard for you" and instead of take a mental health day / break they go like "stop being so extra, do it or leave it, psych is something that doesn't belong in school" Like I love my school but I hate their thinking about mental issues and how they not even try to handle it or help in any way.

I can't take breaks because at my high school, there is no way to catch up. I go to school even if I'm sick because it's better and easier than getting teachers to help me by catching me up on the work I missed. Plus the work load is so high that it is too much work and is impossible to make up the work I missed and do the work from the days after I've come back to school. I am normally a mostly A student, but I almost failed half of my classes last semester because I was sick for a week, and I ended up unable to successfully make up everything I missed plus I did poorly on tests from missing the instructions on how to do the things taught in class. This especially hit hard in Geometry whenever I didn't know how to do an entire week's worth of stuff.

Recently my school has become so controlling they won’t let us take holidays even if our parents call in eventually they’ll somehow force us to come to school. recently a girl came to the principle begging her to let her go home as she hadn’t slept all night and was extremely overworked instead of realizing the girls situation the principle stating screaming at her for her saying that she should be able to manage her studies. This girl is a really good student there fore to improve there reputation the girl along with many other grade a students are being forced to study extra and give extra exams were all broken and devastated at the situation.

What’s awful is that almost every parent that exists denies mental health as being a thing and thinks it’s just a weak young generation because mental health wasn’t talked about in their day and since it wasn’t studied 30 years ago it must be false.

I find myself in a situation almost exactly the same as hers when she was younger. By the age of just 5-6 I was having horrible thoughts of death and existentialism. I was what you would call a “pessimistic nihilist.” I had horrible anxiety issues when that started, and I never realized what it was. Then when I was 7 my clinical depression started. I would fantasize about killing myself. Even going as far as to choke myself, in hopes that it would work as a placeholder for a noose. I of course didn’t know that it was physically impossible to kill myself with those means. When I turned 11 I finally started to accept that I wasn’t okay, and eventually I was able to tell people about it. I’m not currently suicidal anymore, which is a plus, but depression has instead affected my motivation 1000-fold. It’s insane. To the untrained eye everyone would think I was lazy, but in reality I was just depressed and unmotivated. It was almost impossible to get out of bed, and doing actual schoolwork was 100 times worse. It has gotten to the point where I’ll go days, or even weeks without doing any sort of schoolwork because it’s so hard. It’s like a steel wall preventing me from just sitting down and starting on getting things done. I absolutely love school. I love learning, but it’s so hard. When I do eventually get motivation to do things, I can only get maybe 4-5 things done before I reach my limit. I wish everyone, including me, had caught on before it got to this point but now I have way too long of a road to getting back to normal.
