Pressed Barley and Barley flakes are a great alternative to oatmeal breakfasts while backpacking. Tastes just as good but it is more nutritious.

    I would like to be clear about one thing :) That opening comment from Mittencamper was real, and I was being a bit sarcastic with my tone! I do agree with the gist of the comment and want to say that he is a stand-up guy who had a channel that had a great little run and can be found at kzread.info Also a viewer has just pointed out that my math was wrong and led to some incorrect calculations. While barley is still a great alternative and very nutritious, my numbers for the macronutrients were way off. Here is what he wrote with links to the correct calculations at the end. "I have just watched your Barley vs Oats video and while I generally agree with your conclusions, I feel that some of your numbers are not as accurate as they should be. The manufacturer provides the breakup of the foods based on the weight of the sample, which in the case of the tables that you provided, are 100g for barley and 40g for oats. When the values for the oats are multiplied by 2.5 to allow for this difference, the carbohydrate, protein and fat amounts are almost identical. The major difference is in the amount of fibre (a type of carbohydrate), which is 33% higher for the barley. The total of fat, carbohydrate and protein is also almost the same. Most of the differences between these totals and the 100g sample weight is moisture. On a comparison for equal volumes, your masses are somewhat different to the manufacturers' for the same volume, but that depends on how densely packed the two grains are. Doing a comparison for equal volumes based on your weights for a half-cup gives quite different ratios to what you have shown." Here is a revised doc he made with the updated numbers bit.ly/3suQo39

    I love to mix and match. If you can get your hands on rolled oats, rolled barley, and rolled spelt, mix them and cold soak with apple juice or milk (on trail use powdered milk or powdered juice) and your favorite dried fruits and nuts/seeds for a killer breakfast or snack! (The Swiss call this Birchermuesli)

    I was short on Yak butter so just went with the plain pressed barley :) I went through an experimental phase a few years ago of grinding different things and then just adding water for an instant meal. In the end, I found I preferred something to chew :) For anyone reading the comment and wanting to know more about Tsumpa www.tibetantsampa.com/

Everything I’ve seen in your collection is for 3 to 5 day trips. Since I’m attempting my first through hike in spring 2022, what differences should I consider when planning for longer trips? If you’ve already covered this topic in an earlier vid, please direct me to it. Thanks!

    I get asked that question a lot and I really don't have an answer because I'm just more or less a weekend Backpacker! But give me a few years to retire and when I do my thru-hike I'll have a good answer for you :-) I should add that the only thing I've come up with is doing some bounce boxes with some staple ingredients. Easy to have a bag of nutritional yeast, a bag of chia seeds, things like that follow you along the trail.

  • @PaultheBackpacker

    @PaultheBackpacker

    They would be the same as the rolled oats. The only difference is because they're processed less, they would have a slightly lower glycemic index then regular rolled oats. Barley has a lower GI than oats, so not sure if that would make them somewhere near equal in that category I would have to do a little bit of research :-)

    Your basically saying that Barley is double the nutritional value of Oatmeal. So for the same nutritional value you would have to carry twice as much Oatmeal to match the Barley. You covered the question I was going to ask ... Cold Soaking. I cold soak Old Fashion Oatmeal ( 1/2 cup ) over night ( 1 cup of water ) , get up and breakfast is ready. Apparently with Barley I would get more bang for my Buck. Will the same measurements 1/2 cup dry to 1 cup liquid work? .

    Take a look at the very first comment that I pinned. Someone pointed out a flaw in my math! the new numbers are there. For the macronutrients if you're basically getting the same, but for all the other nutrients you would be getting more bang for your buck. I tried to also add a note to the title, but I'm wondering if it gets cut off when people pull up the video.

    Unfortunately, I have to disagree, but only based on one simple point; Barley contains gluten, oats do not. I have issues with gluten, so not an option really. I use organic, steel-cut oats, though. Not processed 'porridge/oatmeal' with added sugar, etc.

    Huge fan of steel cut oats! It is so funny that you are leaving a comment this morning. I am not kidding, literally about 10 minutes ago I was taking my bag of barley and dumping it into a container that used to have oats in it. My wife walked by and said that she could just smell the gluten dripping out if it :) she is gluten intolerant.

That is the description, where someone would put extra notes and hyperlinks to other Web pages.
