In Holland where I live it was not allowed to read books for school in other languages but my teacher {from Hungary} made an exception for Dostojevski Thank God for that because he became my favorite writer and philosopher, without him I would have lost all faith! I always said;" I do not believe in God or Jezus...but I do believe in Prince Myshkin!" You can try to do the right thing...and everything falls apart around you, but you have to try it anyway...I MOST love Nastasja Philipofna Barashkova {born again lam}, she is the most interesting, most admirable fictional person ever.....And I love Rogozjin too! He only knew one kind of love, the burning desire to 'consume' the one you love, at the cost of every thing...her live and his own...I love how Dostojevski makes you love even a murderer, an obsessed man...I know people can really be like that....

I actually just bought it while visiting Australia. When I'm done with the two remaining witcher books, probably next week when I fly back to Frankfurt, I'm gonna start with "The Idiot" in the plane.

I think the main thing i took away from this is our consistent turning away from God or the ideal due to our fear of living up to it, perhaps not feeling worthy, despite unconditional love and forgiveness. Another theme i found was the desire that we have as humans to self destruct in large or small ways. For instance in lebedevs constant scheming and then repentance, natasyas inability to commit, or aglayas choice at the end of the story. It was a beautiful book.

I agree, it is perhaps the best book when it comes to learning more about the nature of humanity and the good

I just finished the book today. I don’t feel like I am able to understand the larger themes of larger books I’m not sure if it’s because I’m not used to reading such works, haven’t really cared much for deeper dives into books or the fact that I haven’t been reading long. Maybe a combination of all three but I did really enjoy the book and the final scene with Myshkin and Rogozhin definitely has an impact

It is a phenomenal book

God knows only how much I love this book... Ended the 3rd part just 5 minutes ago. Can't wait to start the 4th. Love it. Kafka is good too, just a reminder that Kafka read Dostoyevsky. Nietzche said for him that he and his works are the only works that he learned something from.

I seem to have a Russian name disability. I'd just like to say that with Dostoyevsky I use a piece of white paper for a bookmark, writing down the names of each character as they are introduced, and adding their family or friendship connections as I come across them. For an English reader, the many switches between first names, patronymics, family names, and nicknames I find bewildering, at least until my second reading. I need to be able to refer to this list occasionally as I go through the novel in order to keep the characters straight. The Idiot is, a perfect example of this need.

Just finished the book, it quickly became one of my favorite books, amazing piece of art.

And so many think because then happened, now isn't. But didn't I mention? The ongoing WOW is happening, right now! We are all co-authors of this dancing exuberance, where even our inabilities are having a roast. We are the authors of ourselves, co-authoring a gigantic Dostoevsky novel starring clowns! This entire thing we're involved with, called the world, is an opportunity to exhibit how exciting alienation can be. Life is a matter of a miracle that is collected over time by moments flabbergasted to be in each others' presence.

Here is the cheat code. If i can literally just sit around basking in my own trippiness and Dostojevskij and Billie childishness then that short-circuits all of life. That's the genius of this method. That's its power. You think this is a bug. This is not a bug. This is a feature. This is exactly what you want. You want to short circuit that because you see then it frees you up.

I just finished the book and I agree with everything but I don’t think it’s a book for everyone starting with Anastasia’s background. The ending of the book was really dark! I thought this book was kind of a lighter and comforting type coming from Dostoevsky when I first started reading but as the book progresses it becomes darker and sad. I was hoping the prince to be happy :/ the book has full on material for analysis!!!!!

in any case, love anything about D..and here love the script why , read the Idiot will change the way litt reprents , no matter about religion

I'm not fully sure as to how much of Myshkin's behavior should be seen as the ideal, though I do think that it is one of the few models which is worthy of discussion and analysis. Perhaps, it would be a mix between that of Alyosha, Myshkin, and perhaps an incorporation of the Euclidean mind of Ivan (in a very limited way).

I disagree, he can talk the way he wishes to and the hand gestures actually adds more spirit and emphasis the message.
