You are one of the reasons why I’m quitting video games. This is day 19 and I’m already feeling better. Sold my pc and bought a road bicycle and a gym membership. Watching your videos really helps me to stay motivated and focused.

You helped me stay away from games . I learned from you how and why to delete my steam, how games get people addicted.. I havent played games for 14 months and I constantly ask myself if I even have the time anymore. Biggest thing that turned me away from gaming was the health issues it created or exarcebated. As you ve said, if you dont have health ,what do you really have ? A big thank you, goes to you.

I quit gaming (for the 2nd time after a short relapse) on January 4th this year again. Traded it for walking, exercising, playing piano, listening to podcasts and reading books. On one of the older Game Quitters podcasts a book called The Miracle Morning was discussed. Got it as an ebook and finished it in a few days. Today was day 30 of doing my SAVERS (read the book if you want to know more ;-) ) and it has totally changed my life. I'm feeling a lot better now. After 5 years of being on sickness benefits I'm finally ready to start working again! All thanks to Game Quitters and a life changing book.

I'm 39 and grew up with NES, SNES, N64, PS1, PS2, then got into computer gaming with The Sims 3, Wii, and most recently Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Switch. I was always in denial about how much of an emotional crutch video games have been in my life. I was skipping school to play The Sims, staying up all night and not eating. I remember my parents doing the same in the late 80s and early 90s with Tetris, staying up all night trying to beat it and then dragging themselves to work, so I know that the addiction runs in the family. After my dad died in 2011, I fell into gaming a lot harder, knowing that I was using it as a distraction from my emotions. I work full time as a nurse and gaming doesn't really affect my life on a daily basis, but I just had a week of vacation and wound up gaming far too much. It was a wake up call that I'm missing out on life and the things I really want to do, like play more guitar, lose weight, get into a far better headspace. I came on KZread on a whim that there were videos about this kind of thing, and found you. So, thanks! My profiles are deleted, and my systems and games are listed for sale. Within the next few years, I'd like to save up enough money to actually visit Greece and Italy, rather than run through them as Alexios or Ezio.

My grandparents bought me a NES when I was practically a baby and they were the ones getting hooked more than I was. My grandfather was OG showing me all of the little tricks to score extra points. After a while they even realized that gaming was hindering their progress and health, with cricks in their necks. Games are in fact a great past time but if you're only gaming then you're not balancing your life accordingly. Peace and love.

Cam, I follow you since some years ago and your videos have always helped me to reflect on my gaming problems (and others as well). I tried abstaining from gaming some times, did a detox, and sometimes it worked quite well, sometimes not, but I always found it difficult and in periods of stress I've always ended up relapsing. My health's good, thankfuly I'm always exercising or practicing some kind of sport. I eat well (I cook many times, and it's fun!), and I have some irl friends, some of them I'm actually visiting and having fun without gaming. But you know, overall my life's been the same since many years now. Yes I'm studying at the uni, but I still don't have a job, I've secluded myself many times for too long, I've even abandoned so many projects and hobbies of mine that I love and enjoy, and that are fulfilling too. I'm sad because of that. I feel so stuck. I see my friends are moving on with their lives while I'm falling behind, still the same or worse as before. I'm doing nothing with my life! And I don't even know if I'm capable of getting out of this situation anymore. Honestly, I love videogames, they're so much fun, I don't want to stop gaming. Heck, it's been a long time since I've even played addictive games, and despite that I'm hooked! I know I can't moderate, that I need to quit for good to be able to function in life. Sometimes it's been an easy decision, but this time it's hard. So no, I'm not stopping gaming right now. But I'm not giving up. I have so many things to do that I'll never lose hope or stop trying to get better, somehow. Perhaps with games, or perhaps without them. But if I learned anything from your videos, Cam, is that if I can be happy, fulfilled, and have the life that I want. Thank you for who you are, and for what you do for all of us. For being an example of what we can become if we put the effort on doing the things that we need to in order to have a better life.

sometimes it's not about knowing what to do but also recognizing what you need to not do. addition by subtraction. so although things haven't always grown as much as you wish, they definitely won't grow any more than that when you are continuing to game. so at least that's a positive step!

Cam, you are such an inspiration for me. Thank you for all your work you put into this. Ever since I was 13 years old I had a gaming addiction that was holding back my progress in life. At 20 years old, I was finally able to realize my problem and have been off gaming for 6 months now. I’m really starting to turn my life around and I actually have hope for once in my life! Although I regret not taking action earlier (especially during my high school years) I am thankful that I was able to this past year. I always had a gut feeling that my time I put towards gaming was bad but I didn’t know why it truly was. Without a reason why quitting felt like an impossibility. But once you clearly explained why it was harmful to me I was able to take a step back. I feel so liberated!

I am embarrassed with myself. All my classmates from high school went on to do better things and I am still stuck here. Joined university 2 years after graduating HS, and I am already going back to my old habits by playing for long hours. I don't think the problem is video games, but a wanting for an escape. That is something I realized in the gap years I took. I need to replace bad habits with good ones, already starting by learning to video edit. I want to get into reading books as well.

Good work cam for me personally I haven’t really been struggling with it and I have unplugged my PlayStation I don’t know when I’m going to boot it up But I do respect what your doing I haven’t really played much only like once in an arcade. I’m not sure if I’m going to quit I see the negative effects of gaming I’m not addicted to it but I can see the flaws and how easily it can affect someone for me I might play a bit. But I’m going to make sure that it doesn’t become the focus overall tho it’s not to bad and when I decide to take time off playing for a few weeks it’s actually not that bad I do I guess still struggle with some stuff but I’m fine overall. but I do know I still struggle with social media and having high screen time. I’m currently on summer break and I guess I have been practicing drawing and keeping up with my daily exercise for half an hour. Do you have any tips or ideas of things I could do.

Hi Cam, great to see you stopped by Dubai, I live here, hope you had a great one. I have a question, I have managed to stay away from videogames for some time now. I just don't enjoy them anymore and so even though I have played them for years, I have a strong feeling to play, but my rational side of, I just don't find them fun anymore so I won't waste time on them is actually in control. I do wonder though, what is your thoughts on digital boardgames? I like to play Terraforming Mars on Steam once every week (the game takes like 2 hours). In my mind, I don't think it will mess with my brain like traditional games do. But not sure. What are your thoughts? Thanks

I think if you keep it to once/wk and it's not as "exciting" as other "games" then it can be ok. The key for me in moderation is: - Don't play daily - Less is more (20 mins is better than hours at a time) - Boring is better (don't play exciting games, play ones you get bored after 20 mins) - Don't be in a rush (it's ok if you don't play every week)

Thank you for these videos. You are helping people to see that life itself is interesting, and we don't need games to feel good. I would go even one step further though: quit using anything with a screen for entertainment purposes. No movies, no series, no KZread. Those things can quickly replace gaming. There are so many interesting ways to be fulfilled in life and to have fun: read books, read comics, play tabletop games, hang out with friends, work on physical hobbies, go to trade school and learn how to work with your hands, travel (even if it is inside you own country), learn how to play an instrument. The list is endless. And you know that feeling of excitement that you had as a kid? You know, the one you lost and are desperately trying to get again like a drug addict chasing that first high. It comes back.

I agree with everything you’ve said in this video pretty much. Travelling is good indeed, but people like TheUnrealMan for example are staying in the UK and aren’t going on holidays so they can become super rich and won’t have to return to the UK. It’s definitely possible for people to give up their bad habits and make changes but sadly very few people are ambitious and have a good work ethic.

This is more “what can help cure gaming addiction.” None of the problems you mentioned really affect you if you just play casually. You can still game and have all the things you mentioned, games are meant for you to relax and unwind or escape reality for a bit. Not really bad unless you do it too much.

I really want to earn enough money from crypto so I can go travel and see the world, something I haven't done while I was gaming all these years. Thanks to you and some of my friends I was able to quit gaming and fix my life and everything is going well for me now!

I've quit videogames exactly 176 days ago (before this achivement, I did some 100 days streaks but as I grow up I lose interest in videogames -I'm 25 years old, probably play since I was 4 at ps1,ps2,ecc..). One of the reasons is surely growing up but also because I embarked on long bike rides and what I usually do instead of ''videogaming'' is reading, writing, cycle, calisthenic. Surely there is people that switch the addiction, but it depends. Anyways I don't care about the video itself and its justification or whatever, I'm just bringing my experience. I apologize for the tone in case you might find it very rude. Videogames are a passive activity, reading is an active activity that require concentration, (certainly reading spicy trash books like 50 shades isn't exactly the best thing, the market is full of trash books that you can read like you are eating a sandwich, you simply don't remind anything about it after a couple of weeks) all the achivements and saves you ''unlock'' on the videogames could be cancelled by pressing a button while the experience you get by reading a book of Ernst Jünger, Gurdijeff, or some other philosophers can't be forgotten. A video game contributes little or nothing to the development of critical thinking, unlike the book, in which you realize whether an author is an idiot or someone intelligent in the video game or movie you are mostly prey to the narrative and those behind the development pass their propaganda mostly to a bunch of children who are slowly programmed in a certain way, there are certainly exceptions. Moreover, the modern video game industry has the mere purpose of keeping you attached to the screen, as it seems that many video games have been developed not by classic developers but by neurologists whose sole purpose is to make you as addicted as possible. The videogames industry make Bilions of dollars and the managers that own the development studios are there only to make the better possible income, there is no ethic, the only purpose is getting more and more money and they have no remorse to close studios or fire developers because the game (that is usually shit even in the modern AAA games) doesn't sell. Plus we remind the modern day scam of release the game at 50% of development and then try to pass off the rest of the development ''expansions'' and some time you even pay for it. Don't come and say that you need skills on videogames, the only skills you are getting is ruining your eyes with the blue light screen, I don't care about the losers that does competitive esport gaming since none of them exit from these with a minimum of cultural background due to their experience, while instead they have become champions at meming, insulting and are also champions in porn addiction since video games and pornography (as opposed to Reading) secrete an amount of dopamine not obtainable in nature and they are often related.

@@karolyburkhalter thank you for being self aware. Of YOUR PERSONAL experience, first of all "video games require no concentration" have you ever played a video game? And even if that were true so what? Its something to be done in your downtime? "Videogames contribute nothing to your life" ok well thats not true they contribute relaxation and positive mental and restoration if done in moderation on top of the many studys showing the positive efects of gaming. "Game companys want you to be addicted" you have no proof of that and if it were true then everyone wants you to be addicted to their product‽ so that they can make maximum profit? Its up to the individual to decide wether they want to be addicted to ANYTHING or not, "game companys just want money!" Well yea no shit? Thats capitalism, its not unethical its a buissness, "you cant find that dopamine in nature" probably the dumbest arguement ever. Is reading a part of nature to you? Did "nature just make books out of thin air? " NO, humans made words that made languiges that made books? Just like humans made video games? "wElL gAmEs gIvE mOrE doPaMinE tHaN bOokS!" OK?! SO DO IT IN MODERATION? If you can handle it they enjoy it? How is this hard to understand? If you cannot handle videogames thats fine but ive just debunked all your objective arguements without giving a single thiught to it. Please if you feel a need to crusade against video games be rational. Not everyone shares the same experiences as you do

Also saying that video games contribute nothing to critical thinking is just a Lie. Many studys prove otherwise. Also you absolutly CAN orget a book of philosipher. And il do you one better just lile you can deleate a save on a video game you can throw away a book? Like in the trash??? 😂 your reasoning it genuenly baffeling to me. Again i have no problem with you quitting video games you do you but i will not be socially bullied with "studys" and "facts" into quitting games.

@@igydkygs00kwhi Clearly the gaming industries, like other industries such as pornography or modern film industries (like Netflix, etc..) want you to stay ''connected'' to the screen as much as possible. As far as addiction is concerned it is most evident with games like those of Paradox Interactive that work not unlike games of chance, and I can state this with certainty since I have spent I think about 2000 hours on all their games (and I was still a ''recruit'' since there are people who have spent 20000 hours on them, all day at the screen), but other online games are no better. You didn't understand at all what I meant by the ''dopamine effect that you can't get in nature''. Reading books will never allow your brain to secrete as much dopamine as you get in video games, porn or TV series, in nature you would never get such a stim You may not have realized that this is what a certain power wants from a modern guy. Instead of getting out of the house, becoming self-aware, developing critical thinking, we are being atomized and locked in our dark rooms, away from the rest of the world. If it used to be playing soccer with friends or any other sport, now everyone is on discord chatting, as I said, atomized, emptied of any serious interest, lost in self-stimulation. As far as addiction goes, it's very evident with games like those from Paradox Interactive which work no differently than gambling games, and I can say this with certainty given that I've spent I think around 2000 hours on all their games (and I've still been a ' 'recruit'' given that there are people who have spent 20,000 hours, all day on the screen), but other online games are no better, given the human products that live among us today and spend their time playing video games as soon as they come back from school or work. You didn't understand at all what I meant by the ''dopamine effect that cannot be obtained in nature''. Reading books, doing physical exercise, will never allow your brain to secrete a quantity of dopamine equal to that you get in video games, porn or TV series, and in any case it is a completely different and incomparable thing since these require effort, concentration and commitment while the others are obtained passively and very easily just by looking at a screen, it's basically just effortless reward. The reason is precisely this, a small percentage can manage to ''play'' in moderation as the vast majority are then sucked into the vortex of addiction, willy-nilly, the majority of kids grew up playing video games and their brain is the result of years and years of atrophy of the prefrontal cortex, and given that the majority of gamers are also porn addicts there isn't much else to say about it. Maybe you didn't realize that this is what a certain power wants from a modern boy. Instead of leaving home, becoming self-aware, developing critical thinking, we are atomized and locked in our dark rooms, away from the rest of the world. If before we played football with friends or any other sport, now everyone is on discord chatting and playing games online, as I said, atomised, emptied of any serious interest, lost in self-stimulation, there's no need to look for excuses like '' yes but we still go out'', now the ''digitalisation'' desired by those in power is advancing and more and more young children are being educated to be in front of a screen, with parents giving their child the mobile phone to keep them quiet (instead of trying to make him stop crying or screaming), or the fact that screens are also being introduced at school so you spend most of your time in front of a screen. It would be enough for you to read Huxley's Brave New World to realize the drift into which this degenerate society is going. From the level of your answers, from your attitude, it is clear that you have barely read a book, it is clear that you are a kid who still has to grow up (if you ever grow up, since there are far too many adult children in the world), who only knows how to respond in style. ''meme'' and I have no interest in imposing the facts on you, since erudition does not teach intuition (heraclitus) it is useless to argue, you don't have that ''nous'' or spark that allows you to understand, you can argue as much as you want, take sentence by sentence trying to ''debate'' and ''debunk'' but in the end you always remain at that level of subjectivity, in your little protective bubble. It is useless to waste time trying to wake up a hylic plebeian, we are at the end of the Cycle, in which the young people are already senile and everything is capitalized trying to obtain a profit, (as foreseen by the Brahmavaivarta Mahapurana writing but also in the iron age of Ovid which is the exact same Wisdom but in a Western key) forgetting that what remains on this world rusts, while true wealth is in a metaphysical place, translated: beyond physics. But since we go too deep here, I'll leave you here where you are, on the surface where your masters want you, I'm not going to answer anymore.
