i’m mexican and been to austin many times and i’d say I didn’t find it very diverse tbh, but then again I live in houston, and houston is super diverse. the most diverse city in texas imo. also the food scene here in houston is better. you can find super cheap and good quality food from all backgrounds. austin is more fusion stuff food.

I love reading comments like this, too. My son (he’s an adult) is openly Gay. People think things have changed and it’s so much better in terms of acceptance, it’s not. We are looking to move. Massachusetts is nice but extremely expensive. I’ve lived here my entire life and looking for a change. My son works full time/college full time BUT he can do college remotely and transfer for work pretty much anywhere. I know no one asked! This is one of the biggest reasons I appreciate reading different people’s thoughts/experiences.

Lived in north Austin for 13 years about 14 years ago. If you are over 40 you will be considered old. I worked for non profits and ut. Many people had a real attitude. I’m from the suburbs of NYC and the people up there were less uppity than those in Austin. Austin thinks it’s more special than it is. I know it’s gotten more crowded and expensive since I left. Probably good for college kids and those just starting out. Texas in itself is a good reason to live in another state. The politics and rights of women leave alot to be desired.

Great video Michel! I grew up near San Francisco and went to UT for college (graduated 2017 and moved back to CA). I love Austin but that heat is really hard to get over coming from California 😅 now I prefer to visit in the Oct-Nov time frame when the weather is usually more bearable. I agree with you that Austin is a great food place for dietary restrictions but overall the food lacks in diversity compared to other cities.

One thing I think people always underestimate about Texas is just how HUGE it is! It doesn’t seem like this would be that important of a point, but when you have a job that requires driving to other cities in the state or you want to go visit relatives in another city or a nearby state, those drives can take forever!! Another thing about Texas being so large is that it has everything - beaches, mountains, desert, forests, plains, hills, scrub, etc.. It may just take you awhile to reach whichever you’re interested in. 😄 I’ve lived in Texas and liked it, but I don’t think I’ll probably ever move back, largely because of how hot it is and the expectation that it will only get hotter. I didn’t get to a lot of places in Texas, but I LOVED visiting Austin! ❤

I live in the burbs around austin and i would say lives are pretty different being in austin vs a surrounding city. I like it because its more quiet and i make the 30 minute drive with tolls when i know the traffic isnt going to be bad to visit with friends or people wanting to explore austin. If you consider yourself a city person you might not be as content in the suburbs, just a slower pace of life

I’m from Monterrey Mexico and visited Austin for the first time in my life (I’m 34, but I was 33 when I went) last April 9-11/2023, and being 100% honest with you, I LOVED IT!!!, It was the best thing that has ever happened to me. I loved the Zilker Park, and kayaking at the Lady Bird Lake, the Congress Avenue, walking, scooter through it until we got to SOCO. I only wish I had gone to the public pool, Barton Springs I think is its name. But overall, it was A DREAM for me!!!, I felt free. I wish with all my heart one day I could live there 🥹 (maybe you could invite me one day 😂🙏🏽). When I got back to my hometown, I even developed post vacation depression 😢. KEEP AUSTIN WEIRD!!!

Hi Michel, Austin is first on the list and then Boise, ID is second. I live in Boise, and the demographics are a bit different, most of the people moving here is retired and middle aged with kids. Boise, like Austin cost of living, such as rent has increased so much that local people can’t afford to live here. Idaho is the Texas of the North West from what I understand. Jordy is playing here on May 12th I believe, I hope you can come visit. ❤

Thank you for adding a perspective we won’t really get from this channel. Michel is lovely, but there are no POC in her friend group or family, I don’t even see any in the background of her videos when running errands. Maybe there are more in her personal network, but none that have made an appearance on the channel. Diversity is not her area of expertise, which is totally fine, but it’s nice to hear from other informed viewers that can answer that question for those of us that need confirmation.

Pretty much all the cons that were mentioned are the result of everyone moving there 🤦. I'm born and raised in San Antonio, 41 years, and the growth here makes me sick. So much beautiful land disappears every year, never ending construction and traffic, thousands of cheap crap houses neighborhoods and apartments, land and property prices out of control. You have to keep moving further and further away from the city to get away from it all.

I live in Buda (literally 35mins away without traffic). Husband is vegan, I’m vegetarian but prefer to eat vegan mostly. Ideally, we want to live in Austin as it caters to all of our needs. Cons: IT IS EXPENSIVE. Finding a house there seems like a nightmare. Traffic is horrible during rush hours and yes, restaurants are pricey too. We frequent Austin almost every weekend. At this point we’re thinking of moving further away from Austin because it’s wayyyy more affordable. 😅 Even in Buda it is just not gonna happen anymore 😢

I've lived here for 2 years an truly don't get the hype. Austin is very cool, but IMO it's more of a place to visit than live. The housing situation is ridiculous, it's nearly impossible to find a home within Austin for a reasonable price. It feels like California 2.0, expensive and busy. That being said, every time I walk Town Lake I vow to be more content with Austin because there are so many (not so hidden) gems.

I was born and raised in Austin. I used to think I might live there after college ... but nah. I'm getting the hell out of Texas! Austin is too expensive. Bus transportation is fine but it gets stuck in the same traffic as the cars, everything I grew up with has been torn down and turned into luxury condos, and the state government kneecaps cities anytime they try to pass legislation like paid sick leave. All the cool hippies and artists who used to make Austin "weird" have moved to San Marcos, haha

I am a native of color of ATX and an independent voter. If you move to ATX you better have an supported network because rent is high. You better come to Austin with massive skills because competition for entry level jobs is crazy. Yes, Austin is a young city so if you are over 40 and a person of color good luck finding an social network. I walk into establishments as an mature woman of Color and I feel like an Unicorn. Austin is for young Caucasian people. I was born in Travis County so that’s the only reason, I am still in the Austin Area, and I have my Bachelor’s Degree from St. Edward’s University so I have been able to adjust to the rapid growth of outsiders ( I am part of the lucky few whom have been able to remain in Austin) Austin is no longer a medium size city and has nothing to offer mature people. Pay is low, traffic is AWFUL, rent/housing is HIGH, and CRIME is sky Rocketing, and the African American population is dwindling. To wrap up if you are young, White, and have Multiple degrees. and networking then Austin is for YOU!

Really fair and balanced. I lived in New York for six years; there are cons about even the most sought after or "desirable" cities. ATX isn't perfect, but the people here are superb: beautiful, kind, and conscientious. The culture is such that people are slow to judge others and quick to take inventory of themselves. I love that it's laid back here yet there is still a vibe of "do something with yourself". Not in that erratic, over-caffeinated way that you experience on the east coast, but the undercurrent of encouraging productivity is still present. Finally, I have to say, I do like the politics here. There's an implicit friction about a progressive bastion in a red state which I think forces a more earnest dialogue, at least for the people coming to these sensitive discussions in good faith. Cheers, Michel!

Sure there's no personal income tax, but the property tax will suffocate you. If you rent, well, that's figured in also. Look on Zillow at 205 E 35th St, Austin, TX. Annual property tax $27,745. My house in Boulder, CO at $950K property tax $4825. CO income tax about that same amount. So how do you like that "no income tax" thing? Boulder is kind of the Austin of Colorado. I lived in Plano, TX area for 30 years. Not going back.

I lived there for a month last year and Austin is one of my favorite cities. I have to agree with everything you said!! I play beach volleyball in LA and was surprised at how big that scene was here. My pros: great food scene (the bbq: OMG!), artsy and active, lots of green space, super friendly people, lots of people out and about all the time, the rolling hills and cute towns outside of Austin (like Dripping Springs), bikeable city (remember I come from LA). Cons: the heat and humidity (I was there in April), the COL is about as bad as LA, traffic like LA, mosquitoes, and surprisingly a lack of Trader Joes and Whole Foods (lol in LA we have the on every corner it seems), but I love HEB (just not the parking lots).

I lived in Austin and Nashville. And Austin is waaaay better than Nashville. Big thing is because of space, Nashville is recording studio capital and artist capital but live music is way heavier in ATX. Also Austin i not as pretentious. Downtown is way better than Nashville too, the lakes make a big deal in ATX. The areas in austin is by far better than than Hillsboro village. Music row, 12 south, the gulch, broadway, mid Town, berry hill, sylvan Park. Atx has way more hospitality than Nashville . Nashville is more touristy and top heavy, everything is all about drinking. Austin more authentic tons of things to do more than drinking. Weather by far is waaay better in austin than Nashville. It's hotter here and longer but It rains here in nashville so much and winter is so long. Nashville has better traffic but Austin highway system is better than Nashville. I've lived in both

I love your content and have been watching for a couple of years now. I don’t expect everyone to have the same views as I do. All of your regular viewers know that you identify as a Christian, but to not mention the glaringly obvious lack of reproductive rights for women living in Texas as one of the cons in this video about Austin/Texas really stood out to me. I would hope that reproductive rights are very important to women in their 20s and beyond especially. As a few others stated here, I would never move to Texas purely because of this reason and because I identify as female. I’m not commenting this to be rude, it’s just a very obvious con about living in Texas as a woman and some of your international viewers might not be aware of this fact about Texas.

Great points. I hear what you're saying about the real estate prices. But you kind of give advice without giving it. You can find a great brand new home 30 minutes from the city. Most of my West and East Coast clients are doing just that. For an Austin zip code, it's tough to find anything that's not a fixer-upper for less than 750K. The median price is around 550K, but that's ALL types of properties. You have 1.5M lots in Tarrytown and Westlake, and 400K homes in South and Northeast Austin affecting numbers. The good news though? Seller's are paying for closing costs and starting to drop prices! Also, I think no pro sports team is a PRO. :)

Yep, yep, & YEP! I live well used to be 45min from South Austin now it takes over an hr bcuz Austin has spread out and taken over San Marcos and so it’s a domino effect! San Marcos is spreading out into the “mini tri” cities as they used to be known for. San Marcos: New Braunfles & Seguin. Ok restaurants in two of those towns. I’ve been here for almost 12yrs and I know growth happens but I believe it’s going to take No time at all to become like Dallas/Ft.Worth. We’ll be Austin/San Antonio! My young adult kids (24 & 25yrs old)n I were joking about a name for it, like Dallas/Ft.Worth, since most ppl in the US don’t even realize Dallas and Ft.Worth are very different cities but everyone thinks they’re one! Which btw if you go there do Not say that, you will get veryyyyy dirty looks! No offense to folks who live there I get it, feeling very similar feelings watching the huge quick expansion of AUS. The ppl of both cities are not afraid to point out they’re NoT one 😮Which they are different cities. The airfare to fly into Austin is on an average $200-$300 more than DFW. My husband commutes for work via flying is the only option, so I do have knowledge on this matter. Also since AUS became an Int’l airport it’s cheaper to fly into AUS than SAT(San Antonio) usually. Sometimes you can get a cheaper fly to SAT. But hey airfare is outrageous pretty much everywhere in the States and that’s for a different conversation right ❤ Just adding to Michel’s video. A lil perspective from someone just outside South Austin. Thank you Michel you did a really good job on this. Honest and truthful😊 Also, sometimes texting doesn’t portray voice fluctuations so I am commenting with a nice tone and honestly letting y’all know past Michel’s insight cuz I live just a lil farther out than her. Nothing negative in my tone 😊

Austin is a pretty walkable and Uber friendly place as well if you live central. Plenty of buses to catch in town as well . I’ve been without a car for 2 years now and anywhere else I would be stressing without one. But no big deal for me here. Its really Not that spread out considering Dallas or Houston. I’ve actually met Uber drivers that specifically travel from out of town just to drive for Uber here in Austin because of the constant pick ups they get. Also there are tons of gyms, every apartment has one lol on top of multiple golds gym, la fitness, lifetime fitness , planet fitness etc. anyways not tryna harp just want ppl to get correct info if you’re reading.

I've been in Austin for a decade.... outside of eating and drinking, there isn't that much to do after hitting the must - see things a few times. For half a year you are locked indoors with the AC. Government here ranges from ineffective to down right hateful. Drivers are nuts, tech bros are annoying and living in a city that gets swarmed with tourists all the time is annoying AF. Medical is limited in Austin, we need more of everything. If you're in the suburbs, they are just bland and anonymous. You could be in any KB homes cookie cutter hellscape, why not pick one with cooler weather. If you're in a cute core neighborhood, be prepared for some carpetbagger developer to come in and tear down the local character and bring dallasafornia next door to you. People here come and go, so dating and making true long term friends is hard because everyone dips out after a few years or in constantly caught up in looking for the next big thing. I'm thrilled to be taking my equity and moving on to greener pastures in the next few months. If I could do it all over again, I would only stay in Austin for a maximum of three years.
