WHY YOU SHOULD NOT FLY A ONESIE (at least not yet)

Спорт

In the last 5 years, the onepiece trackingsuits have become extremely popular in basejumping, and it's understandable: they are fast, performant, fun and easy to fly.
Yet, I think they are not suitable for beginners because they introduce wingsuit piloting problematics in the tracking environment. I am afraid that the urge of beginners to get a onesie will lead to more incidents and accidents, which is why I recommend doing a few seasons of two piece tracking before going for a bigger suit.
In this video I'm explaining a few of the problems that can be encountered by people who underestimate the dangers of tracking big lines because I'm hoping to bring awareness and encourage a slow and serious progression. However, this is not an instructional video and it doesn't contain all the information you need to begin onepiece: make sure you inform yourself and you get coaching or mentoring before throwing yourself from a cliff.
I'm aware that the video is a bit long so I hope you all make it until the end and learn something with it!

    Legend! Thanks for a great vid. I've got 31 jumps in my 2 piece, booked in for a BASE course a year from now and will be cranking out a bunch more skydives in it between now and then. 450 skydives total. Will keep a lot of this in mind with my progression as time goes on. Cheers!

Some people only hear themselves or the guy trying to make fun of them when they have no relative judgement of your experience...your spider plants in the background(as I've been told they are) look great. Its takes time and experience to make them love you and grow. Kinda like progression through flying your body.

    I think the amount of people flying 1-piece suits now, who are probably only average (or worse) in 2-piece tracking, is insane! The rush to big suits and wingsuits from cliffs seems highly affected by ego, keeping up with the crowd, just a general feeling of trying to get ahead in the game! I think the issue is more fuelled by skydiving rather than being solved by it! It’s a great video but probably the people who need the advice most, will be the ones who ignore it. It’s like pissing in the wind. I don’t say all this in a self righteous sense, cos I’m a big believer in an attitude of letting people go as hard as they want and do whatever the fuck they want to in base... I just think it’s important that a person is aware and informed when they choose their path. So in that sense, very well done David 👍

Josh Nicholls got away with murder on the regular. So did Graham, so did Uli. But it was nothing more than that, just getting away with it. What should be glorified are guys like Chris Mcdougall, who've had long healthy careers with safety and sustainability at the forefront of their progression. PS I really mean no disrespect to those that are fallen, I just don't think the future generations of BASE should strive to mow the lawn in their tracksuits

    In my oppinion the first clips show exactly, that more skydiving and tunnel experience would help a lot if you get unstable with big Trackingsuits, if you are able to fly youre suit in every direction, be it Headup or down or even slatos, layouts etc. These could have easily been avoided, also if you train on glide and get to know yore stallpoint as well. So I think youre point, that a few skydives are more than enough and the rest can be learned by just basejumping is pretty much wrong thats the same with wingsuits, learn every skill thats possible to acieve in the sky and than translate it to basejumping, even if you just need 20% of youre previous experience, this might change a near death jump to an easily correctet mistake. Bad exits could be avoided by ballon jumping or a lot of jumps in brento etc. too.

  • @davidlaffarguebasejump

    @davidlaffarguebasejump

    You missed my point: I never said that people should not skydive and that they can basejump instead: it's mandatory for my students to skydive a lot their trackingsuits before showing up to my course, and I believe that a solid skydive background is necessary. I'm saying that the skydiving experience isn't enough and that you still need to respect a step by step progression in basejumping no matter the number of skydives: having skydive training doesn't mean you can take shortcuts. Unfortunately I see people putting 95% of their energy in the skydive training and then cutting corners in base when that's precisely where the biggest difficulty is. My sentence was here to illustrate the absurdity of people putting huge efforts into training for the easy part and then being oblivious to the biggest dangers. Most people who's incidents are shown in the video have 1000+ skydives, and through the years I've seen people with 10000+ skydives screwing up because of lack of comprehension of the base environment. The ones that had the humility to consider themselves beginners in a new sport progressed through every step brilliantly thanks to their background, but the ones who thought the sky experience was enough and cut corners were reminded that they aren't invincible. I encourage to maximize the training in both sports.

    Thanks for your feedback. I am personally in love with the classic trackingsuit from Phoenix Fly and this is the one I require for my courses. It’s an easy suit to fly, which performs great while being reasonably sized so you can still go wild with it and not be negatively affected by too much fabric. I have flown all kind of two pieces from all brand, included bigger ones from PF, but my love still goes to the smaller version with which I had so much fun.

That being said, all promotional videos are shot with experienced jumpers and I usually wait a year so I can watch how it performs in the hands of many average jumpers, only then I can formulate an opinion. Overall, I’m really happy that manufacturers finally got interest into developing onepiece trackingsuits and trying new designs and I’m super excited every time a new product comes out.

    Broken legs and 3 years on crutches learning how to walk again means no more fun for me, but I've been thinking. To improve the good decision making, why not use VR/augmented reality? If you do a skydive with a VR helmet you can visually fly a base route as a beginner that someone with more experience has flown and recorded. It would let people hone their decision making skills in a much safer environment and get debriefed when they screw up instead of hospital/morgue.
