Fresh AFF beginner here, in juli 2023, 51 yo. I love those tips and you're absolutly right: after the free fall, things can get complicated very quick ;-)

I’m just struggling to find that balance between flaring too early and flaring too late. It was my ninth jump and I’m excited to use this knowledge on my next jump!! I’m sure my depth perception will improve over time and alleviate these struggles.

Depth perception does become better as you jump more. As you start to grow more comfortable, your relaxation allows for time to slow down for you, and everything becomes much easier. We can work together online if you want. I help lots of people push through these, very normal problems. You can reach out through AdventureWisdom.com

If you're wearing a digital alti have a look once you deploy. Look at what altitude you're at before you start a full flare. It'll give a good indication of how much altitude you lose when you flare. Helped me a lot to stand my landings. Of course that may go out the window if you land with the wind or crosswind but if you're against the wind I find it's a consistent way to judge your flare height.

I have no scientific evidence nor reason to believe that the flare response changes with respect to the windline. Observe your own data to confirm. Further, keep in mind that as you descend, the density of the air increases, reducing the amount of altitude required to achieve level-off. This does not mean the data is invaluable, only that our expectations must be adjusted. This is true of maneuver recovery response as well.
