WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER WEAR LUXE TO WORK + BEST (QUALITY) WORK BAGS (ad: includes a gifted item)

How do you dress for work when you have an interest in luxury?
I always avoid wearing labels into the office, for multiple reasons - mainly that (without meaning to) you can get peoples backs up and maybe even lose a pay rise or promotion as you appear like you don’t need it!
But equally, it’s important that your work attire isn’t cheap and unkempt either. You want to look like you’re doing well, but not too well! And you want to look like the type of person the boss would want with them in a meeting.
I share here my favourite places to shop for work clothes, but mainly my favourite 3 work bags. One is a handbag and the other two are to fit my laptop. All are “High End High Street” priced and are full leather.
PALE BLUE SENREVE BAG (The colour is called “Ice” and this was gifted to me in 2017)

Hey guys! So I just wanted to do this video to share my personal experiences working in corporates in the U.K. As I mention at the start of the video, working in agencies and more relaxed places hasn’t been an issue at all. It’s mainly in corporates where it can sometimes pay to play the game 😎 If your experience has been different, that’s totally cool! All feedback and sharing experiences are welcomed, but please keep the comments respectful ☺️🙏🏽 Thank you for watching!xx

DragonFlyy I completely agree. Men are not judged that harshly on how they spend their money. But because women are taught to be competing against each other, you end up with women at the office getting offended because you have nice clothes or a luxury bag. Girl, we do the same job : if you prefer wearing H&M shoes rather than investing on quality, that’s your choice.

I'm an entrepreneur now, but when I was in Corporate I rose through the ranks very quickly. I always dressed "the role above by rank." So, I dressed where I wanted to be and not where I was. As a result, I was taken more seriously and offered more opportunities. As an entrepreneur, it's different. You need to know your audience. If you're meeting with suppliers, keep your flashy jewelry at home as it will weaken your negotiations. If you're meeting with VCs definitely leave all of the designer stuff at home. If you're meeting with new clients, dress in a way that is relatable and aspirational.

If u r putting ur best at work and it’s not being appreciated, the universe would have a way of catapulting u to where you are meant to be in due time. If you have luxury, you really don’t need to scream “here I come” with material possessions before people realize you have it; those who know would know whether you choose to show off or not. Enjoy what you have; embrace the blessings but most importantly give back with a selfless heart whenever you can. Love you Sophie and I totally see where you’re coming from. But I’m gonna have to politely disagree on that. We spend 70% of our lives at work. I want to wear what makes me feel good and have the nice things I worked hard for next to me, getting used, rather than leave them being at home collecting dust. I want to wear fashion forward clothing (labels or not), puffy sleeves and feathered skirts, just because this is who I am. The alternative is just keeping it as you said “vanilla”, blending in, being unnoticed, and just come home exhausted after a whole day of work. What would that be for? So you’d get a promotion and more money? What are you gonna do with that money? Buy more nice things to leave at home?

I think you have to consider where she’s coming from. She has worked in corporate environments, like I do as well (specifically banking). It’s not just about “making more money”, it’s also about being recognised for what you’re doing. I do come home exhausted and I want that effort to be recognised through promotion and pay raises. We don’t even get inflation so even that is an argument for me at work. In light of that, the last thing I need the bosses thinking is that it’s just fine not to give raises and promotions etc and that would be the impression I’m giving if I’m wearing Chanel to work! If you do that, you give the wrong message and you effectively become worse off every year. Now, if you don’t work in that kind of environment and you’re free to wear whatever you want, please enjoy it!

If you're spending 70% of your life at work, you need a new career. That's almost 17 hrs a day, 7 days a week. It should always be less than 25%. I think the point is that you go enjoy life after work with the fancy things rather than letting them collect dust. It also depends on the job you have as to what style would be appropriate there without potentially stunting your success. Indeed, in a majority of jobs, it can hurt your ability to rise. I shattered a lot of glass ceilings by keeping it simple. If people are talking about your clothes, they aren't listening to your ideas.

You should be able to tastefully wear your Lux/designer clothes, and handbags without that much scrutiny. Oh well, guess that's just work place politics.

Ideally it should be based on your work and accomplishments but people are weird and it's not always the case... it doesn't matter if you were already a billionaire heiress or something, you still deserve to be rewarded for your hard work. It's like when businesses don't want to hear that you want an entry level job because you need the money even though they know that's why 99% of people want the job so you both have to pretend like it's not lol.

I agree, it really does depend on the work place and I think sometimes the age of your co-workers. I worked at a Uni here and everyone was about my age (at the time in my 20s) and I had bought a used Prada bag for $500 (it was my first high end designer bag and it was in brand new condition) and a few months into me using it a team lead approached me and while we were talking he said; "Well, you're the only one in this office with a Prada bag." I thought it was so rude. Like yes. I am. But how is that any of your business??? But after that and with different places I've worked I get more compliments on that same bag. I however still am daunted with dealing with people who don't understand luxury and put me down about it, or are just bewildered that I spent $500 bucks on the bag, to which I then have to explain it retailed for much, much more and I've used it every single day for about 3 years (still do). A lot of people really just want a $20 bag and then get mad when it falls apart I guess. But I'm rambling now so--thank you for another amazing video

I really enjoy your videos and seldom comment but I felt compelled on this one. I’m with those in the comments who disagree with a number of the presumptions in this video. Ultimately people should were what they’re comfortable with so if flexing in luxury is not comfortable then definitely skip it. But a few things to consider. 1. A raise or promotion should never be based on who “needs” it. Different people bring different talents to the work place so I don’t know what the right formula is but it can’t be based on need. 2. No one at a job is unclear about who is making more money within the company up and down the ladder. Not one person believes the receptionist is making more than the project manager because the receptionist carries a Chanel. 3. Even if the receptionist makes less in the job than the manager it is completely possible that the reception generally has more financial means or disposal income. That’s just life. Some people just have more regardless of job or education. Different people have different access to resources, different demands on their funds, different priorities. 4. Someone else said this already. We spend do much of our time at work if we aren’t wearing our nice things to work then where? I know you have a video about why no one needs multiple handbags so maybe that’s the answer. Sorry this was long. Thanks for the great videos!

Very valid points, Sophie. It’s unfortunate that wearing visibly luxe or flashy items to work can kick us in the butt. I want to be able to wear these items as much as I can. I’m lucky that I’m self employed. I don’t own my practice, but I’m an associate and see patients 4 days of the week. My handbag gets stowed away. I’m not in any direct competition with the owners of the clinic. My clothes are high street. I may wear designer shoes time to time, weather permitting. I don’t like to wear designer bags in front of catty women in my extended family or in laws, however. I have a much older sister in law who has jealousy issues. I always leave my bags in the car. No joke, I currently have a pair of flip flops in the car Incase I need to change my shoes if I happen to get dragged to see her. Sad, but the reality is that no one is happy if you’re in some way doing better. I do own a few CHANEL classic flaps. I especially enjoy the Chanel reissue for this reason because I almost feel safe to wear it anywhere do to the absence of the CC logo.

I think it’s also a mark of class and humility to be thoughtful of what you wear. Respect the work environment you’re working in. It’s not just about ME ME ME. The bottom line is, no luxury item is worth its implicit cost of production value. It’s a huge premium you’re shelling out. But I wouldn’t say “never” because there are items out there designed to be used for work that are luxury items. I think if it’s no higher than 1000 mark and of a discreet design (even with a prominent logo), there should be no shame or problems. If I felt held back professionally because of my handbag I would leave that environment and move somewhere with a healthy culture, to be honest.

Hi Sophie, thanks for being up such interesting topic. Last week a coworker of 8 years just decided to come by and gave me a lecture on how my LV speedy can feed family of 4 for a whole month. This is first time I brought a designer bag to work, and I did contemplated for a while before doing that. In the end I figured an LV speedy is probably the least ‘provocative’ designer bag because all my coworker could easily afford it and 90% of them are men (I think they simply don’t care about bags).... But it proofs me wrong lol (the guy came commenting is a man and quite senior of age, I am not offended but very surprised!)... So I agree with you, you never know what people are thinking and how they judge you and how those judgement can impact your life. Unfortunately right now a lot of high end items screams the label, it is hard for people to not notice. I used to bring Anya Hindmarch to work and nobody said a thing ;). In the end I figured MAYBE that particular guy IS currently struggling to feed a family of 4... you just never know what is happening in other ppl’s life.... I think i will still bring LV speedy (come on!) but probably never Chanel or Hermes... especially something screams the designer label on it...

I agree with you 100%, been there and experienced it. I work in Corporate America but also do Real Estate part time on the side, my Real Estate makes me damn good money, more than my Corporate job. My boss's know that I do Real Estate and they know that I would never let it get in the way of my everyday Corporate job so I'm good there, but during our merit increase I found out that several co-workers got more than 3% pay increase, I didn't get what I'm worth nor near what everyone else got, when I asked guess what I was told.... you're ok you have a side hustle that makes you money... like are you fucking kidding me, am I seriously hearing this shit... so it's my fault that I have bigger dreams and goals that my ass doesn't sit around after work or weekends binge watching Netflix but instead I'm working my ass off trying to get clients, because I'm working towards financial freedom amongst other things... Man that shit really upset me... you know what it's not even all about labels, I personally don't wear labels but do wear good quality clothes and jewelry, I'm a thrifter and boutique shopper always finding amazing deals, at thrift stores yes some designers but my hunt is always to find clothes that are 100% silks, cashmere or cotton clothes, doesn't have to be designer just good quality good condition and must for nice... and even then I get comments like .. "Ooohhh aren't we fancy today", "ooohhh aren't we bouggie", or "you have an interview today?"... and others will say "oh she always dresses fancy", as if... if they only knew 90% of my clothes are thrift store finds, I have nice clothes because it's the same clothes I wear for my "side hustle" real estate can't afford to have special clothes for corporate America and Entrepreneurship, I have goals ladies. So anyway I agree, I dress to feel good, but instead they make.you feel bad about it. Damn if you do damn if you don't.

I can understand your point of view. Being understated and not flashing your wealth maintains you relatable which works for collaboration at the office. However, I also agree with the notion that if you judge me by my bag, well that means you have a lot of time to sit and look at my possessions rather than my contribution to the company. So if you saved and finally got that bag, use it. From a utilitarian point of view, every use reduces the overall cost per use of the item. So use it.

Depends on your field. I'm going into fashion, specifically as creative colour consultant. I have to know the fashions, the trends, fads, and styles. The colours and shades of each season. I also have to look the part or I won't be taken seriously, so does that mean designer staple pieces, absolutely. A luxury bag, and/or coat will serve me better than to wear nondescript, regardless of quality. At least 2 of my teachers told us to get a luxury bag after graduation to bring to interviews to get the higher opening salary. A friend is a lawyer, her boss told her to get an expensive luxury bag to bring to meet clients. That way you'll get the higher paying clients bc they precieve you to be successful enough to own a Chanel bag. She followed the advice. Age has increased her portfolio drastically bc of a Chanel bag.

So grateful for the company I work for. I wear my designer items & I am very open about my salary… but I tell my team how I worked for what I have & I make sure my team knows I’ll do everything I can to get them where they want to be as long as they put forth the effort. No room for envy. There’s plenty of success to go around!

In my workplace I can thankfully wear luxury items without ruining my chances of a promotion. If anything it will work the other way around and will make you seem more successful and competent....which is quite sad also, actually.

Thanks Sophie for addressing this topic of something we all face...I too find myself very cautious, not wearing my luxury handbags unless they have a small label or none at all, otherwise just a plain leather tote or maybe contemporary/high street. It's really unfortunate that people judge so much based on looks, and that hardworking people that might appear more wealthy, sometimes get passed up for opportunities or promotions on just those first impressions alone, sigh. Anyway, I'd love to see more videos on bag suggestions for work, and how to look and feel smart and put together :).

I wear a uniform to work so I don't have to worry about messing up my nicer stuff. Going out however, that's when Miss. EXTRA BOUGIE makes her appearance 😊😊 I say if you wear regular clothes to work, dress appropriately but not too flash. You can look nice without trying to look like you have an interview with Ms. Wintour. Work is work not a fashion show. Leave the luxe at home. Love your channel!!!

Laughing because this is so important. I do not wear luxury, but I know first hand how 'blending in' can be very important. When I started at my job people called me "diva shoes" because I wore wedge sandals and heels. Not even particularly flashy. But.. paired with a full face of makeup and a somewhat alternative haircut, I was very different from the average employee. Now people don't care because they know me, but they perceived me as being snobbish at first.

I agree 💯. When I used to wear my designer clothes, bags and shoes ppl would wonder about my salary range and then talk about me saying oh did her husband buy her those things?! So the focus on wasn’t on my skills, hard work, accomplishments, it was now on my brand name clothing, how much I was making and then insults like her husband prob bought it for her bec she can’t possibly be doing that well. Don’t give ppl a reason to talk about u or minimize your efforts at work- take Sophie’s advice. Dress smart but keep the Chanel, Gucci etc at home. Let your work ethic, skills, talents speak for you.

So my bf has a company with his dad, and his dad once in a meeting with a client saw the client's car, they have a very good relation so he felt to leave a tip for his client/friend, asking first if he was using a certain type of car to visit his client? (client of the client), he said yet! And he replied, do not use your best car to visit a customer, it doesn't look good cause when you present a project well, they'll see you as very expensive right off the bat. That's a lesson I learned without being involved in the story, it's nice that you Sophie is approaching this subject and teaching people, well done!

We loved when you went on your anniversary to Paris and you stated there was a Chanel and Dior on every corner like a (I don’t remember your exact reference) but imagined you meant like a convenience store like in every corner. You’re so much fun my friend’s father passed away yesterday and he said it was very therapeutic for him bc he has to go home to Rhode Island and deal with his family and loss. Thank you for another amazing video. I work hard and save up for my dream bags/jewelries. I used to wear Chanel/Hermès to work and I used to received decent bonus. About 2 years ago, someone commented on my bags and jewelries to other colleagues and my bosses. Since then, I often hear weird guesses about my income and my husband’s income (because of my rings). I haven’t received any bonuses in 2 years and my boss just joking told me that I’m a great asset to his company which is why he pays me enough to own luxury items. I hate changing my job over money, however, I have been thinking of changing my job because the standard bonus + increase for my type of job is at least 30%-50% of annual salary. Great video, very useful suggestions 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I work in a school and no one usually cares what u wear except if you show off. I get a lot of comments anyway coz my husband is a surgeon and it’s always a snide comment ...why are you still working ..why do you need to work ..I just laugh it off ..but inside I’m annoyed ...in this day and age are women not allowed to have their own legitimate career if their husbands earn good money..it’s a ridiculous mindset... I’ve been working all my life and when we got married he was a Med student..we didn’t have any money until we were in our 40's ..sorry to rant ..this touched a sensitive issue I guess

Hi Sophie I have not commented in a while. I just couldn’t agree more with you on this topic. In Miami is a whole different level. Some ppl in this city go way overboard wearing designer from head to toe, and no upon intended but it comes across too flashy, not elegant and who cares. I don’t use my designer bags to work either. Maybe once in a blue moon, I rather use them outside of the work environment but to each their own.

I have worked at a diamond firm which was in the middle of the diamond industry in my country. I saw all these office girls (secretaries I assume) dressing in the fanciest clothes, wearing all gold and diamonds they own, designer shoes and bags all that. They were the ones people talked down the most. They were seen as gold diggers with a double agenda. I'm more modest fashion wise. I wore blouses buttoned up to my neck with black pants or whenever I wore a dress it was with black stockings. And on top of that I never wore any jewelery dispite working with and handling diamonds all day. I never had any trouble being taken seriously. Nobody talked to me like I was a lesser being and was trusted with a platinum credit card of the most important bank manager in our industry. I just think when it comes to business and big money, people just don't like it when you're there to flaunt it all. They are very very serious about their work and they want our focus to be on their business too. After all, they're not paying you to express yourself and your personality but to express theirs. Never have I ever felt like they thought that I was doing better than them. They knew very damn well who were cashing in millions of $$.

I'm so happy to hear someone tell the truth about workplace fashion politics. This even goes on in the fashion industry! The same goes for interviews - I seriously doubt if anyone, no matter where you live, gets hired only for their skills. Personality and appearance rate far higher than anyone wants to admit.

I did a mistake by sharing to coworker what I have and how grateful I feel. Eventually other employee started bragging and wanna be louder than everyone else. She also started to speak in a way that she is holding my improvement back at the work place. I stopped sharing about personal life and talk more about work. I see the difference. I realized that when u share things related to wealth and good loving partners, others tend to feel worse about themselves. Because they dont have the things you have, it creates jealousy and it is an ugly thing. Better to stay humble and receive respect from people than boasting your ego. :)

Hi Sophie! I loved this video! This was an accurate interpretation of my job about two years ago. I wouldn't even dare wearing anything designer or nice for that matter at my job. My boss had that alpha attitude and she always had to be the best looking woman in the department. A nice pair of boots, a nice leather jacket, or even a simple piece of jewelry, forget it. I can totally relate to this video. So sad that it is spot on it to certain people in the work force.

I wear my luxury items to work everyday! It depends on how one carries themselves. One can carry a Birkin to work with modestly in speech and gracefulness to anyone. I’m proud to tell whoever comments or ask about my bag or shoes that it is a good buy and it’s value for money. I’m going to have it for many, many years and It’s never ever going to end up in landfill. And most of all I tell them I only have a few but select pieces compared to some who have more than a dozen bags with a life-span of 5 or less years.

I agree completely with the statements of not being too showy in the work setting. Regardless of the reaction - good or bad - it is distracting. And it takes away from the content of your work that you are attempting to communicate. We are judged by how we look and that includes if we look like we spend too much money on luxury. The only luxury brand I might say is an exception is LV. It seems like it has become so common that a Neverfull isn’t that big a deal. If you stick with the canvas, that is. And no hot stamping. Tory Burch is another middle range brand and hits the right note with their classic work bags. Great Video Sophie and thank you for the thoughtful advice on professionalism and luxury.
