Heya, Rita aka Fàn Lǎoshī here! Today we have the brilliant Mandarin learner and speaker Akeel on my channel!
Akeel was born in NYC, and grew up in Maryland. After learning Mandarin Chinese in high school and college, he decided to move to China, and instead of big cities like Shanghai or Beijing, he went to Hefei, a southern city that is not so popular for foreigners!
Last time, we talked about why he started learning Mandarin in high school, what blew his mind when he moved to a 2-tier city in China, how different expats’ life is in Shanghai and how it may influence Mandarin learning.
In the second half of our interview, we talked about:
0:00 His interest in Chinese language came from…
3:07 The moments he felt language improvement
8:53 Akeel’s secret methods of maintaining Mandarin level up
18:35 Importance of learning Mandarin Chinese
You're very welcome to share your story of life in China and your Chinese learning journey in the comments!
Your subscription, like and comment are the MOST IMPORTANT SUPPORT for purely original content like this video! The more my videos are promoted to Chinese learners by KZread algorithm, the more motivated I will be to make content for you all!
It means the world to me. 谢谢!
Remember, with Fàn lǎoshī, Chinese makes perfect sense!

It is times like these where I am able to listen to a 20 minute conversation in Chinese and fully understand everything without having to look at the screen at the subtitles, that I know I have improved. Listening to Chinese music and watching Chinese dramas (with subs) has helped tremendously for me. The pitch was the hardest obstacle, but once you learn it and can hear it, the language really opens up to you.

Ikr I'm planning to learn Chinese and now I'm learning first most of the characters I'll need (using the Heisig method it will take me a bit more than a month as I'm doing 50 a day) because I've already seen how easy grammar is and I know I will be able to go fast through it.

@@kinulidd0598 omg 50 a day using heisig sounds painful... Good luck 🤞 Personally, I learn ~10 or so a day, by reading material that contains words with those new characters, and then by finding other words with those characters, so I get the core meaning of each character

15:50 This makes me very sad. I started singing at the age of 14. It was really bad. And then I learn guitar at 16. Now I'm 20 and I accept I'm a tone deaf. I need more practice and time to train my ear than an average person. I'm also a polyglot wannabe. Hearing the connection of pitch between music and language makes me very sad since it literally says I have disadvantages at both.

Glad to know that you've been using this video for learning! Do you mean that you speak slowly in your mother tongue, too? Hmmm if so, you may want to speed up in your mother tongue, and try to repeat the sentence a few times after you are 100% sure about you want to say. Just get used to speaking in a faster speed first. Let me know if it helps!
