    adding reverb to a bus is also a good way to get some glue cause it makes all the instruments sound like they're in the same room.

    You should fr make a mixing course where you teach everything you know(from beginner to utmost advanced) explaining how compressors work, eq's, flangers, etc. Glueing mixes, vocals, etc. Your tutorials are always so good but sometimes I feel confused as to how/when I should know what to be listening for or what to listen for when using certain plugins or effects.

    So...great video as always. Extra secret pro tip: put the kick and the bass on it's own bus altogether. put a similar processor on the kick/bass bus. the point of this is just so you have even more control overall on your low end. there's no reason to compress the kick into the drum bus when the kick/bass relationship is important. then I put them all together into yet another bus and kiss it with glue compression.

    Every time I use drum bus compression for hiphop/trap drums I make the drums more "peaky" - you can check that with an oscilloscope. literally the very very first peaks of the kick get louder, which to my ears always destroys my balance. the dynamics gets wilder which leads to more limiting which leads to lower rms/lufs. instead I would rather try saturation or clipping or limiting on the drumbus. remember those drum sound which we use are already compressed AF and have enough peak information. instead a real kick drum recorded in a drum room isn't that punchy and need more peak so you grad a compressor with a slow attack to emphasize more the initial transient and tame the rest. again remember a compressor is a ADSR shaper. Hope we can help each other out to get better at what we do :)

  • @LukeSly91

    @LukeSly91

    Жыл бұрын

    That's likely happening because of setting too fast of an attack time which is squashing all the transients. If you do set a fast attack its best to use it very minimally if used on a drum bus

    Excellent video. Though, something I’ve realised is that many people who have watched this will have watched other tutorials (not even on the same subject) and have adopted other methods of producing and mixing that may contrast what you say. For example, A beat making video from busy works beats said the snare should always be the loudest element. Then in this video (when explaining the compressor) you imply the kick is the loudest and the snare is quieter. Something that may help amateurs is explaining in these circumstances that there are no rules, it’s all entirely dependant on the track as many (guilty myself) take something someone else has said in Other videos as fact, not subjective. I believe this might help amateur producers Great Video Devon, thank you 🙏

    Thanks for the tutorial. I’m somewhat new to producing and after watching this video I went back over some projects and experimented with this technique. I found for boom bap i keep my parallel bus substantially lower but for some hard hitting trap (especially with rimshots) that squashed track sounds nice cranked up. I just subscribed, looking forward to watching more tutorials

    I can definitely hear the difference. They sound more together, the best way I can describe it. But my question is where in your process of making the beat do you use it? Is this like one of the very last steps? I'd have to think so because you'd have to make sure you're not adding other stuff into the beat or else it might change how you have to mix everything.

  • @JoshuaBmusic

    A good way to think is to separate production, mixing, and mastering. I fall into mixing while I produce & it makes me never finish beats lol. Definitely a finishing touch step.

    @@JoshuaBmusic Thank you. I'm actually decent at mixing except I never grasped compression. I understand exactly what it does, and how to work a compressor. I don't really get when and where to use, or rather whenever I'm making beats 99% of the time mixing, and just thoughtful composition, tend to eliminate the need for it. Yet my beats don't sound good enough so I know I'm missing things.

  • @JoshuaBmusic

    @JoshuaBmusic

    Жыл бұрын

    @@threezysworld8089 what I’ve began to realize is that a lot of the one shots we download are already compressed and EQ’d. The changes are minor & more for getting my sounds to sonically sit right. Tiny cuts. In truth I’m in a spot where I’m afraid to boost frequencies. I need to study that. I saw something that said think of the threshold on a compressor as what’s pulling it forward or backwards into the mix. (I hope that was the right tip, I am just trying to go from memory). So if I have a sound at the level I want it but it’s too forward or hidden I’ll compress it bring it forward or backwards.
