I agree, the problem is that people started to decide that their old worthless games were suddenly worth something. Suddenly everyone thought their 20 year old copy of Super Mario World was like the next Nintendo World Championships or other rare carts that went for thousands. I remember buying dozens of PS1 and N64 games back in 2007, before retro exploded... they were $1-5. Not joking, several N64 games I got for $1. Amazon had dozens of copies SEALED of Perfect Dark for $3. Even back in the mid to late 90s NES games like Zelda were going for 25 cents. It's this sudden obsession with collecting and places like Wata that try to drive up prices and make it seem like every old game is gold that caused this insane jump in prices. I remember an AVGN episode where he bought a 32X for like $3 then shot it with an arrow... now you are lucky to find a working one for $50. And no, it's not inflation. Inflation did not make things that cost $3 back in 2007 cost $60-80 today, if that was true then candy bars would be $100 right now.

The problem isn’t those who want the game buying it, it is the crowd that buy it because they think it will go up in price whether they want the game or not. I’ve noticed an almost hysteria over the past couple years from that crowd. Any KZreadr with a following mentions “buy this game before you can no longer find it” and next thing you know listing prices double or triple.

Even with the current issues with the collector’s market, I still think you SHOULD get into retro gaming. The current gaming scene is a JOKE! Games making you download a 50GB every week, games bullying you into remortgaging your house to get more lootboxes, demos sold as full games, games released in an unplayable state, it’s horrendous! With retro games, quality and user-friendliness are a LOT more likely!

Great video! I wish that the hobby hasn't been made so unaffordable, as it's really fun to play games as they were originally meant to be played. Not because emulation is bad, not at all its a great alternative. But booting up the original hardware and putting the disc/cartridge in, feels sorta special? Like experiencing something from a different time and how it was made to be played, and a lot of people just can't afford do that now. Also DKoldies isn't just bad for their prices but they often list ''refurbished'' products for more which is fair, until you get it and its evidently not refurbished.

The ps3 example hit hard. I remember a couple years ago I was forced to get a Ps3 because I got super into Metal Gear solid, but Metal Gear solid 4 has literally never been re-released on anything since it came out on Ps3, and I couldn’t just emulate it because I don’t have a very powerful Pc. I got lucky and was able to get a fat Ps3 for around 80 bucks, but it was scary looking at the prices online and seeing how much money I had to potentially shell out just to play 1 game. That experience made me realize how awful things would be if emulation didn’t exist. I also may have the ps3 now, but since I got a fat Ps3 I’m scared the thing is going to explode one of these days; it gets so hot and the fan is so loud at times.

*_Well first off:_* Most of these retro consoles are WELL OVER 25 years old... MUCH older in fact. The NES alone is 38 years old this year (famicom/japanense NES is several years older), and the Atari 2600 (my first console) is closing in on 46 years old. There are older consoles, but Atari 2600 and collecovision are probably the oldest you will see any actual number of people still break out and use on rare occasion (and those people are the most dedicated in the retro gaming community). *_Secondly:_* As someone who was ACTIVELY collecting video games from 1996-2012 (as in: buying them to put in large shelves to brag about... I collected over 3,000 titles by 2010) from places like pawn shops, yard sales, obscure websites - and even ebay as early as 1998 (the year it launched) - I can tell you that there has always been a small market of resellers and buyers of older video games, and different games had wildly different values. I had a part time job in High School and spend every dime on games, and I can tell you that there have ALWAYS been games worth more eye watering money than they were worth.... even when they were only a few years old. I VIVIDLY remember buying Suikoden II (PS1) on eBay for $200 in 2001, and Panzer Dragoon Saga (Saturn) That same year for $250. I also remember buying Tomba! (PS1) in 2000 for $80 used. I even remember dropping $80 on DIgimon World 2 (PS1) in 2005 because I missed its unusually late release, and it was limited print and valuable already on eBay. Usually JRPGs and Obscure Japanese games on PS1 and Saturn always were worth more than they were new. Probably because fans back then just wanted to play them, and emulation still wasn't there yet... plus most people did not have the fast internet required to download ROMs that big. *_The Issue is:_* MOST old cartridge consoles (minus the GBA - there has never been a time its best games were not overpriced) before 2003, were worth practically nothing. Minus some of those RPGs (Earthbound, FFIII, Secret of Mana, Zelda AtoTP, etc) and a few coveted Capcom/Konami games (Megaman/X games, Castlevanias, and Contra games) - no one cared about those consoles. The ONLY reasons RPGs and stuff like mega man still had value, was the strong fan bases of those. *_After KZread got popular and we got retro gaming channels, that was it:_* People started buying these old games and acting like each one was a hidden gem or something, Even in the late 90s and early 2000s some of the hardware ALWAYS had some value (like MVS, Top Loader NES, Virtual Boy, Turbo Duo) because older folks selling them remembered what they costed new (it had not been all that long after all). The Games themselves however, often had little value. Now to be fair, conversely, when you see all these countless (faceless) people on the internet these days saying: *_"In 2007 I bought all these games for $1!" or "In 2011 I bought so-in-so [insert rare title] from the store for $5!"..._* well those people are full of BS. Outside of yard sales, most other places you would find older games would want a cut. Whether it was eBay fees, Pawnshop wanting its profit, etc... but it WAS true that you could buy games generally between $5-20 each (even ones going for hundreds now)... and $40-$70 for a REALLY sought after/rare game (usually RPGs) was typical. *_What drove the big change was the KZreadrs that got big:_* think AVGN, Metal Jesus, Gamesack, etc. They ruined everything for people wanting to just play retro games for cheap. This was a result of emulation still being in its infancy compared to today. Even though many emulators had been around since the mid 1990s (think NESticle) - they were FAR from accurate, fast, or fully compatible, And since you needed a high end PC to even play them - it really was not a option for most. For a decade that fact restricted people from playing all these games, and forced people to contend with the used market.... But that has all changed in the last 8-10 or so years. *_Technology has advanced so much:_* Now your phone can emulate almost any old system perfectly - and so with it, the emulation scene was grown and matured into one that most of us couldn't have even dreamed of even as recently as the xbox 360 and Ps3 gen. Now we have micro PCs that cost literally $20 that can emulate all this stuff; and we have literally hundreds (if not thousands) of handhelds, raspberry pi clones, Soc, etc-etc devices. You can even hack your existing consoles, or buy flash carts. Its a crazy world. And that doesn't even get into the convenience of FPGA systems (like the MISTER or Analogue Pocket) or dropping ROMs onto your Xbox Series S/X, Steam Deck, or (again) the Smart Phone in your pocket (just to name a few options). I have even seen videos of wealthier people playing emulated games on their Samsung smart refrigerators, smart watches, and even TESLAs (someone even got doom working on a calculators years back)! And in a just a few more years PS2 will have FPGA cores, and emulators that finally offer 100% compatibility without a million tweaks. *_As For Me/What I Did:_* As I mentioned above, I eventually collected a little over 3,000 games. I had to get my dad to help me (using a truck) get a bunch of old wall display shelves (6ftx6ft) for a Blockbuster that was going out of business near by, to put them all in my room... I wish I was joking but, hey' I was young m0ronic guy who watched too much MTV and Jack@ss). lol. ...I had to take my bed, dressers, everything out of the room just to fit the shelves in and fill them with games. My room looked like a video store (wall to wall games), with a small 20" TV on a crate in the center of the floor, and I slept on a mattress in the middle of the room because there was no room left to live. *_I WAS ADDICTED TO BUYING AND HOARDING/COLLECTING VIDEOGAMES!_* So long story short, by the time the PS4 was announced, and retro games started to gain some popularity, I sold EVERYTHING. My stuff would be worth $40-50K now probably - but at the time the 12K I got for everything (I sold them as a single massive room LOT on eBay to a guy who drove from 3 states away to pick them up to resale at conventions) - it was enough for me to afford to finally move out of the house before my 30th birthday (blame the 2008 housing crash and recession that followed), and put a down payment on my first that car that wasn't older than me, or complete garbage on wheels that I had to hold together with tears, prayers, and a whole lot of duct tape (literally, lol). I bought as Raspberry Pi (either a Pi1 or Pi 2B), and started getting into emulation - I have never looked back. These days I stepped up to a MISTER FPGA with some 8Bitdo controllers, and I have a Steam Deck and Gaming PC. I emulate most the systems I play, outside of modern stuff like PS4/5... and even switch I occasionally dabble in the emulation (*Cough**Cough*). I actually do still have a old PS2 and GC somewhere around in storage that I never got around to selling; they both have hacks/mod to play ROMs... but I rarely use them, and they were cheap alterations (free in the case of the PS2). ------------------------ *_TLDR:_* Unless you are a older millennial like me, and grew up playing these games on a CRT (which you also need to still have), and get nostalgia playing them with those fuzzy coaxial or AV cables on a 13-20" boobtoob... then you gain nothing playing the original hardware, carts/discs, and etc as a Zoomer or young millennial. Older Millennials and Gen X guys can claim how CRT technology was superior and the artists/designers made the games around them... but it's unreasonable to expect young people today to spend the time and crazy money to buy all the required things. A emulator and a HDTV/monitor is 75% the way to the same experience for 0% the cost... and the games themselves are 100% the same (if not better with possible cheats, hacks, or mods)! The money people my age spend on these games, is NOT to only make them look better (no matter what they claim) - it is to capture some of that same nostalgic feeling of being a carefree kid back in the simpler days of the 70s/80s and 90s. Something lost on most you younger guys, and frankly: a fool errand for older middle-aged guys wasting money and time running on a treadmill year after year constantly chasing a fleeting feeling that they can never reproduce. We are old, those days are over, life sucks now for us - really, grow up guys. Be adults. The world really needs adults right now... and Zoomers... Suckle that t33t of the Emulation goddess! The retro gaming world is your oyster and its mostly free!

Thanks for your comment, lots of detail in there! Probably doesn't deserve to under such a small channel imo. Yeah, when i said 25 years I was meaning handhelds, which i should have been clearer on, however that would still be a bit off because I often forget its far from 2016 now. I don't really know how much younger you're talking, but my parents didn't get an LCD TV until 2009, and most friends I knew had even their 360s hooked up to a CRT. If you were a working adult in the 2000s perhaps you did have a HD plasma or (unfortunately) a rear projection. However, teenagers and kids usually don't have that much money lol, and a lot of parents didn't either. Sure maybe if you're a kid now you wouldn't have that air of nostalgia over old electronics, but the youngest millennials/older Gen Z are quickly nearing 30. Rare things were absolutely always expensive, but I don't think I'm wrong in saying prices were increasing, but relatively stable up until a handful of years ago. I do think you're right about KZread, but idk when it was exactly. Lots of those channels were around for years, however it seems to have really picked up recently. Awesome insight though!

The KZreadrs that film all their videos in front of their 8 ft high walls of video game shelving shit in every shot, that basically do nothing but "pick-ups" and "hidden gem" videos that foment the rabid FOMO in their audience... _those_ types have certainly had a big hand in the massive over-inflation in the market we're now seeing. The issue with emulation is that is not always 100% accurate with the original system. Sometimes there's some missing effects or directly the game doesn't work as it should be. I think a good alternative for retrogaming are flashcarts. Consoles usually aren't too expensive, and alongside with a flashcart you can play basically what you want, and still being 100% accurate with the system. As for moderm platforms like PS1, PS2, Xbox, Dreamcast, etc, I prefet softmodding so I can play backups via hard drive. Nice video ^^" Greetings from Spain.

@@BenisBroductions I disagree. For example, in PCSX2 (at least with previous builds, not sure if now is fixed) in some games the fog is rendered very poorly, like in WRC 04 or Metal Gear Solid 3. Also, in some GBA/GBC emulators, they don't emulate the LCD ghosting like it should be. In some original hardware you even experience some slowdowns which in most emulators fix as well. I know they're some very minimal details but in my opinion an emulator will never be as accurate as a console, that's why there're other alternatives like softmodding or cartridges

I find it depends who or where you buy them from. The best places to buy retro games are usually garage sales, flea markets, thrift stores, gaming/entertainment expos, Amazon, or your local retro gaming store(s) or mom and pop shops. I recently bought Batman: The brave and the bold (wii) for $15 at a gaming store (Game City) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Honestly, spot on, and I've been saying this for a long time. I was early on the emulation bandwagon starting back in about 97 when my neighbor had some on his computer. Emulation was incomplete and buggy back then but even still it was amazing. I even had Connectix Virtual Gamestation instead of a real PS1, so my "retro" PS1 experience is actually a commercial emulator for my computer with a USB playstation-clone controller. Somewhere along the way in the late 00's I started collecting retro games for usually about $3 a piece when no one wanted them and maybe spent $20 for rare titles that sell for well north of $100 today. Back then I generally played them on real hardware, but honestly for the last 10 years I haven't touched any of my physical hardware, I just emulate everything. Emulation just offers so much convenience with save states, the ability to use "cheat hardware" like Game Genie without actually needing the real device, and never having to worry about cartridge slot reliability. I also just plain don't have space to lay all the systems out and I don't want to have to hook and unhook a system every time I want to play something else. Then you have the upscaling/graphics filters that truly elevate these games to look better than they ever could've on real hardware. This becomes even more true for 3D games as old Playstation games that may have been blocky and distorted on real hardware are suddenly crisp and hi-res and almost could pass for PS2 games. Nobody gets upset when someone upgrades their PC and cranks up the graphics, but for some reason people are "super nostalgic" for all of the limitations of old hardware. There's also no way in hell I'd ever pay modern prices for retro games, forget it. I think what happened is tech bros got way overpaid and wanted to collect all the games they couldn't buy back in the day, so they all competed for complete sets until all inventory was snatched up. I'd probably cash out on most of my retro collection tomorrow if I could do it reliably without getting scammed or undercut massively by selling it as a bulk collection. It's also possible the games will continue to go up, so I'm ready to ride this rollercoaster till the end. Bottom line, I like the games, and I want to play the games in the best possible way possible. Emulators with graphics filters, upscaling, and save states is the best possible way to play so that's what I go for nowadays. Long term I only plan to keep my original childhood games and my favorite ones I've bought since, the rest can live on a hard drive.

I am into retro gaming, but because the total file size of every console before the playstation, including the N64, is so tiny; I saved the money I would have spent on physical media, and will just buy controllers to get the "authentic" feel. Only systems I can justify owning original hardware for are the entire DS line, up to the *new 3DS, The PS Vita, and the Wii U. Hard to emulate the dual screen functionality, or the back touch pad, in a comfortable way. The PS5 runs PS4 games just fine, The Xbox Series runs Xbox One games just fine, people have gotten the Wiimote sensors working on PC, and PS3 emulation is pretty stable now, so unique control gimicks are the only real complication. (outside the spotty compatibility of original Xbox and 360 title emulation, but give them time.)

Nintendo has been complaining about emulation since the 90's. Emulators themselves are de-facto legal per court precedent and technically Nintendo (nor anyone else) have every successfully sued anyone for sharing ROMs or ISOs of defunct games. Scared people with "cease and desist", yes, but not actually sued with a successful verdict. By and large, as long as you are not profiting from it in any way, it is highly unlikely you will ever face any problems for emulation. I guarantee you that just about every person involved in making games today has a hard drive full of ROMs and ISOs from older systems, everyone wants to keep these protected and preserved whether their lawyers/CEOs will let them say it or not.

You're totally right if you just want to play the games. On the other hand original items themselves are going up in value because they don't make them anymore. The kids who grew up playing them are now old and have money. Everyday old consoles and handhelds bite the dust; each time that happens a replacement isn't available to the market. I'm not a collector, but I'm 37 years old and have most of my childhood consoles and hand helds. If one craps out I don't want a replica. I'd personally pay $80 to $150 for something that was probably $15-$20 10 years ago. I love the nostalgia the original item brings. With that being said, if you just want to play the games and don't have a childhood connection, I can't understand spending a bunch of money.

Hmm, I don't seem to be having this problem fortunately... I'm not paying what you could have paid at the ideal period for stuff a certain number of years after its life cycle, i.e. next to nothing, I'm paying half reasonable amounts, I'm not paying too much I'm buying nicely refurnished and adapted consoles for under a 100 or just some used units for under 50... I have a number of half decent CRTs, like nothing unobtainium special but a decent selection. Buy a few upgrade wires ect... It's a nice hobby, I mean I've spent quite a bit over the last few years really... I think not really more than like 500 for ps5 1000-1500 for some massive 4k oled and 70 per current gen title.. I just don't want that stuff, looks like a headache to me, I'm of a certain age I like what I like. I got started getting back into retro gaming with a generic azz CRT office computer monitor I got for 20 and a retro arch emulation. Emulation is fantastic, I did gravitate onwards to original hardware and like to pick up original titles where not too much, it's nice to have both options really, advantages to both. I'm tempted to be getting into mister hardware also, or maybe just buy one someone else built. I wish they would re release certain old titles like Super Metroid in a nice physical form. It's like a few MB game, not hard to get hold of, do I want a nice physical copy about 30/40 monies? Yes. Why not release the game as like a deck of playing cards or something with a nicely produced physical card for use with an official old hardware flash card or modern mini console? That would be sick. Someone is always going to want to pay a lot for an original run copy but it's silly for most people to consider nearer 100 or more cost for a 30 year old 4mb game... But do I want a nice physical item to go on my shelf to represent the works place in my life? Well yeah, surly some nice physical item can be produced to sell around 30/40 for profit...

There are ways of getting authentic experiences that don't involve spending so much. FPGA systems are expensive but are super versatile and accurate, and can be a million systems in one, way into the foreseeable future. Flashcarts are a godsend if you want to use a console for actually playing games instead of showing off. Heck, I'd argue that most people wanting to play retro stuff just need a copy of Retroarch on their existing phone, and something like the Razer Kishin (a cheaper alternative to it).In the end the only consoles I still own are the Switch (which I've had since buying it year one), and a Mega Drive with a flashcart, that I modded myself, for development and nostalgia reasons. All the rest happens on the PC, and it isn't even a very good one at that.

if you really want to throw down cash for the best possible emulation experience - the Mister is amazing. yes, it's still emulation. just really, really good emulation. btw, emulating gamecube or newer on portables < $300 is really a hobby (or a chore). you're going to have to be a real tweaker, or not care at all about even matching original performance to want to go this route. do it on your PC, or get a more expensive handheld. I got a Retroid Pocket 3+ and it's - it's really cool. But it's not nearly as nice or simple an experience as emulating on PC or emulating older consoles on even cheaper handhelds like the RG35xx (which is awesome and easy). if you have a moderately not-bargain-basement phone it might be better too, since that's probably more powerful. I haven't tried that tho so can't comment on it.

Thank you for this opinion, I totally agree. Too many collectors buy games just to own them and never play them. Those same people feel sorry about the inflation of the market while they're literally the half of the cause of why it's inflating. Also too many people start a collection because their favorite KZreadr does. Sorry guys but the inflation is not actually on the scalpers. Scalpers exist in every market where demands are increasing and offers are shrinking, we all know that and so let's stop pretending we didn't. I'm not telling people to not buy anymore of course, I'm just pointing out the actual cause of the inflation.

What really befuddles me about the retrogames market is that it literally is not like this in japan, where most of these games are made, and with a still massive consumerbase. I’ve seen games that go for 30 in the us market be ¥1000. Like honestly if the import fees weren’t so disgustingly large I’d just but my games (when I do, piracy and emulation ftw) from the japanese market. Most games have language options and region locking is easy to get rid of with console hacking. God I hate global shipping

I use to have the whole sega genesis collection than I sold it because the newer sega console has a hard drive with a save file for your games so you don’t have to play it all day trying to beat it in one day . Another reason why I sold it is because I only liked a few games on it streets of rage collection, x-men 2 clone wars . Same with my snes I only played with chrono trigger , final fantasy and goof troops . I got super mad playing chrono trigger on snes because towards the end it freezes I bought another copy it did the same thing so I had to get the one on Sony ps1 to actually beat the game . Owning all those classic game collection is not worth it unless your collecting it like comic books just to have it and feel happy about it other than that the technology is a failure 😞 you waste all that time playing it to find out it freezes on you .

You can still be into retro gaming, you just have to be smart about it and dont just go for the fist thing you see and buy, do some reasearch first, see the actual general value and try to buy either current or better lower value and make sure to inspect and check your merchandise before you just go on and buy things.

I've gotten the bulk of my collection (which is over 50 consoles and roughly a thouand games) for pennies 15+ years ago, back when old games were just old games that nobody cares about. Back then thrift stores had bins with assorted cartridges that were like five bucks each. If I had to start from scratch, I wouldn't do it. The prices have become absurd and the media aren't getting better with time, disc rot is a severe issue and DS/3DS games are failing at an increasing rate too. Also, fuck emulation. I have modified my systems (got vanilla spares in case I feel like putting in a disc) to run games from SD/HDD or use flashcarts. Japanese consoles are way cheaper and usually can be modified to run US games rather easily.

Buy whatever it is that no one wants now. I always see 360 games at yard sales. I recently bought a box of them for 10 bucks. (Funny thing was I was just going to sell off the extras at my annual tag sale but those coincidentally were the unplayable or missing discs.) I will sometimes pick up bulk collections and just sell off the extras at the tag sale for under "market price" just to recoup the cost and get rid of duplicates. I sold off a bunch of common PS3 games to a much older gentleman for $1 a piece. I don't know if he was going to play them or flip them but I was happy to see them go to either good cause.

Getting a Sony Trinitron for your N64 and a Mister for the low cost of 8 Nintendo Switches will NEVER give you the feeling you had playing GoldenEye with your brother/friends etc When you're a kid, you dont have to do much to be entertained. We walked into GameStop and bought what we could afford. Like the game bully for ps2. There were no internet homies looking out to give me the solid advice to purchase that game, i only did it because it was $7
