    There are some great eBay sellers out there who refurbish older consoles and charge a reasonable price. I’ve always foungpd this the best way to go for buying used consoles.

    I will bitch about the prices, cuz literally why should I spend 200 bucks just for a 16-bit game that is crusty, this is why I recommend getting into emulation, companies emulate a lot, like literally the online NES and SNES games are literally emulated and that's the thing, emulation is your best option if you aren't willing to spend a spine, I recommend buying from anbernic or download retroarch on your PC, anbernic makes cool handhelds that can play up to PS1 and N64 here is my options for you RG35XX H/RG35XXSP - both versions have the same power but one has analog sticks and the other is a clam shell with no analog stick, both can play up to N64 and PS1 just fine, although you need to get the roms for N64 on, Also the price is kinda cheap RG Cube/RG556 - both are powerful but the RG Cube is a 1:1 perfect for systems that use that screen but is good regardless, the RG556 has a beautiful long screen, both are comfortable and powerful enough to play GameCube and WII, though I recommend using dolphin MMJR, those 2 are kinda a litte pricy if you want a middle option I recommend buying a RG405V - it's android and somewhat around the same power as the RG Cube, and yet it's cheaper, the RG cube is a android device as well. the reason I don't suggest buying the Nintendo Online service or getting old games, is that they would play fine but emulation makes those games a 1000x better, like increase the FPS, make gameboy have its stinky green screen back, Xbox have done well with their emulation of their old games, like hell, sonic unleashed very well on the series x.

    I've been collecting games since the 1980s and I have picked them up all over the place! For the best overall prices, you just need to know where to pick them up! Garage sales, small booths in the back of flea markets, thrift shops, and small pawn shops are generally good places to shop.😊😊

    Crazy idea but how about you let people enjoy games how they want. If you want to play on original hardware? Cool. If you want to emulate or only play modern games? Also cool. If you want to collect the games (like I do), more power to you. Just let people enjoy things.

    It's more about the elitism around the "right" way to enjoy them that's the problem. Not everyone plays for nostalgia, but for those who do, emulation 100% may not cut it for them. The stigma about it is weird regardless and causes more people to buy old hardware than I believe are truly interested in that aspect of it.

    6:00 This. I own a Sega Dreamcast, PS1 and a N64 with CRT TV and actually prefer to play these games on an emulator anyway. Pre PS3 emulation is 99% flawless and I see no real reason playing them on a real hardware that often. That said I till like to play a real thing sometimes. You know, when that nostalgic mood hits and I have a whole day to play them pretending it's 1999 again

    Retrogame collecting is for patient people, not online buyers wanting things cheap and immediately. It takes years and decades to get a good collection built up and lots of luck. My suggestion is getting a nes snes or genesis mini console and hack em otherwise learn patience and enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Do not buy top dollar online prices, as that drives prices even higher and that's the problem nowadays is over the top online pricing. Retro game collecting was never an immediate deal except for people with money to burn, nowadays that isn't very feasible and retrogames aren't worth collectors prices anyways.

  • @barrelofjim
    @barrelofjim19 күн бұрын

    The elitism/purism around retro gaming pushes those kind of online buyers to feel they need to buy real hardware and many end up paying those prices. I've seen it turn people away from the hobby as a whole before even truly getting started. None of it does any service to the community other than people trying to capitalize on it.

    Thank you for this opinion, I totally agree. Too many collectors buy games just to own them and never play them. Those same people feel sorry about the inflation of the market while they're literally the half of the cause of why it's inflating. Also too many people start a collection because their favorite KZreadr does. Sorry guys but the inflation is not actually on the scalpers. Scalpers exist in every market where demands are increasing and offers are shrinking, we all know that and so let's stop pretending we didn't. I'm not telling people to not buy anymore of course, I'm just pointing out the actual cause of the inflation.

    You can still be into retro gaming, you just have to be smart about it and dont just go for the fist thing you see and buy, do some reasearch first, see the actual general value and try to buy either current or better lower value and make sure to inspect and check your merchandise before you just go on and buy things.

    90% of video games can be had for cheap 10 dollars or less. its the rare games that are costly and rightfully so to have a physical piece of history. collecting video games is not like collecting stamps or coins. this is an art form interactive media with alot of history behind the rare game that might cost a few hundred or thousands of dollars. if you like emulation all power to you. stop hating on those who want to actually own media and dont mind paying the price for it. the gamescape is changing with the advent of all digital media physical copies will be even more coveted and likely be more expensive. at the end of the day yes you can emulate, yes you can download it digitally but nothing beats owning a physical copy and plugging it into original hardware to experience a time long gone.

    Honestly, spot on, and I've been saying this for a long time. I was early on the emulation bandwagon starting back in about 97 when my neighbor had some on his computer. Emulation was incomplete and buggy back then but even still it was amazing. I even had Connectix Virtual Gamestation instead of a real PS1, so my "retro" PS1 experience is actually a commercial emulator for my computer with a USB playstation-clone controller. Somewhere along the way in the late 00's I started collecting retro games for usually about $3 a piece when no one wanted them and maybe spent $20 for rare titles that sell for well north of $100 today. Back then I generally played them on real hardware, but honestly for the last 10 years I haven't touched any of my physical hardware, I just emulate everything. Emulation just offers so much convenience with save states, the ability to use "cheat hardware" like Game Genie without actually needing the real device, and never having to worry about cartridge slot reliability. I also just plain don't have space to lay all the systems out and I don't want to have to hook and unhook a system every time I want to play something else. Then you have the upscaling/graphics filters that truly elevate these games to look better than they ever could've on real hardware. This becomes even more true for 3D games as old Playstation games that may have been blocky and distorted on real hardware are suddenly crisp and hi-res and almost could pass for PS2 games. Nobody gets upset when someone upgrades their PC and cranks up the graphics, but for some reason people are "super nostalgic" for all of the limitations of old hardware. There's also no way in hell I'd ever pay modern prices for retro games, forget it. I think what happened is tech bros got way overpaid and wanted to collect all the games they couldn't buy back in the day, so they all competed for complete sets until all inventory was snatched up. I'd probably cash out on most of my retro collection tomorrow if I could do it reliably without getting scammed or undercut massively by selling it as a bulk collection. It's also possible the games will continue to go up, so I'm ready to ride this rollercoaster till the end. Bottom line, I like the games, and I want to play the games in the best possible way possible. Emulators with graphics filters, upscaling, and save states is the best possible way to play so that's what I go for nowadays. Long term I only plan to keep my original childhood games and my favorite ones I've bought since, the rest can live on a hard drive.

    There are ways of getting authentic experiences that don't involve spending so much. FPGA systems are expensive but are super versatile and accurate, and can be a million systems in one, way into the foreseeable future. Flashcarts are a godsend if you want to use a console for actually playing games instead of showing off. Heck, I'd argue that most people wanting to play retro stuff just need a copy of Retroarch on their existing phone, and something like the Razer Kishin (a cheaper alternative to it).In the end the only consoles I still own are the Switch (which I've had since buying it year one), and a Mega Drive with a flashcart, that I modded myself, for development and nostalgia reasons. All the rest happens on the PC, and it isn't even a very good one at that.

    Getting a Sony Trinitron for your N64 and a Mister for the low cost of 8 Nintendo Switches will NEVER give you the feeling you had playing GoldenEye with your brother/friends etc When you're a kid, you dont have to do much to be entertained. I put all my money into a gaming PC with plenty of storage. I can play anything I want on it, with enhancements or crt shaders, and it's all in one place. Other than that, I have a PS5 for Sony exclusives, and my old 3ds xl since it's great with a flashcart. I'm 35 and I'm not going to be a crusty old bitter nerd soy raging about why retro is better and original hardware is must. I would rather save my money and space for other hobbies, investments, and time with others.

    FPGA consoles are the future. Analogue has some beautiful retro FPGA consoles, and there are more FPGA options like Mister FPGA and more. Old consoles are eventually going to die and their price will keep going up. FPGA consoles can play your cartridges and ROMs. They're *mostly a 1 to 1* hardware recreations of the original ones.

    What really befuddles me about the retrogames market is that it literally is not like this in japan, where most of these games are made, and with a still massive consumerbase. I’ve seen games that go for 30 in the us market be ¥1000. Like honestly if the import fees weren’t so disgustingly large I’d just but my games (when I do, piracy and emulation ftw) from the japanese market. Most games have language options and region locking is easy to get rid of with console hacking. God I hate global shipping

    I've gotten the bulk of my collection (which is over 50 consoles and roughly a thouand games) for pennies 15+ years ago, back when old games were just old games that nobody cares about. Back then thrift stores had bins with assorted cartridges that were like five bucks each. If I had to start from scratch, I wouldn't do it. The prices have become absurd and the media aren't getting better with time, disc rot is a severe issue and DS/3DS games are failing at an increasing rate too. Also, fuck emulation. I have modified my systems (got vanilla spares in case I feel like putting in a disc) to run games from SD/HDD or use flashcarts. Japanese consoles are way cheaper and usually can be modified to run US games rather easily.

    Piracy is still theft. Just because it’s easy to do doesn’t mean it’s not illegal or amoral. You’ll understand when you’re older. People conscientiously do pay attention to these kinds of things, emulation is it’s own kind of clutter too. Nothing is more expensive than free.
