Why You Need Trauma Shears | The Ultimate EDC and DIY Tool

Everyone knows you don't use your wife's sewing scissors to cut paper or tape, and you don't use the hair cutting scissors to open boxes. So what you need are some scissors you can grab for every job without worrying about them. Trauma shears are pretty inexpensive, and generally very tough. They work quite well at handling a variety of tasks around the house and shop, and can handle most scissor sized cutting tasks.
Obviously some tongue in cheek is intended here. Shears are not the best option for cutting branches, or dowels, or hair. They are intended for cutting through clothing, belts, shoes, boots, seatbelts, bandages, and whatever first-aid and trauma needs might arise. You should definitely include a pair in your first aid kits and EDC bags whenever possible. But they make some pretty cost effective utility or hobby scissors to keep around too.

I only have one set of trauma shears. But I am re-ordering five of then tonight. They are entirely essential for serious first aid, plus they do better work in my garden than normal shears.

Finally figured this out myself. 6 bucks for 2 on Amazon and they are the ultimate edc. Still like my fancy pocket knives though.

The best shears I have found are German stainless steel. Combat Medical carries them. About $11.00.

I am always finding new uses for shears. My wife and I are both nurses, which is probably one of the reasons we have so many shears around. I think there is a pair in about every room of the house now. They are just so handy. Ironically, I almost never actually use them at work.

I have multiple trauma shears because I'm an athletic trainer. I have personal pairs of Leatherman Raptors and I have some ones I got from a school years ago. All and all I'd suggest to get them, they cut through athletic tape like it's paper.

How do you sharpen these things

  • @Factor85Labs

Well, each half of the shears is essentially just a single bevel blade. You could use pretty much any stone or hone to sharpen each side, as long as the bevel stays the same. I use a little diamond stone, and it just takes a few minutes.
