A real chimney sweep doesn’t just clean the creosote and soot from the chimney, they also perform a video inspection for free to make sure the structural integrity of the flue isn’t failing and also makes sure your appliance is drafting correctly. A chimney sweep knows what to look for and recommends the proper fix. If it looks clean it still doesn’t mean it’s safe. There’s a lot of expansion and contraction in a chimney flue (tile or stainless) when it gets hot and cools down cracks can form in the tiles that can lead to tile collapse and also stainless steel liner separation and deterioration can happen. Most people don’t call a chimney sweep until it’s to late and they have a problem. Get a chimney sweep out to inspect and get your chimney swept clean once a year and if you can’t do that try to get it done at least once every 2 years, it might just protect your family and investments.

If there had been a fire, the roof would not look so new. It looks more like rust. Maybe try to burn your wood stove hotter so creosote won't build up. I heated my house for more than 20 years with a wood stove and never had a creosote build up.

The old fire places, wood stoves and such would build up creosote on the chimney and flue walls. The creosote often would catch fire and burn the whole house down many times....In the late 70's or early 80's building codes began mandating the use of metal fire place boxes and flues...….Our 1st house built in 1975 had a brick fireplace, our next house we bought in 1982ish had the metal box fireplace.....Wood stoves are seldom seen these days......However if you do buy such get a chimney sweep company to clean....

Im a chimney sweep, and let me tell you right now. if you have a wood stove insert into your masonry chimney like that you should get it lined. it is expensive but let me tell you why it is important.. creosote builds up the most when you have a "cold fire". the regular masonry fireplaces dont do much in the way of heating your house or even the room.. because its getting sucked out with the smoke.. go figure.. that keeps the air in the flue moving rapidly and wont allow build up..

That staining is most likely a result of rust. This that staining can occur from a standard painted steel chimney cap, flashing, or old tv antenna. However if you believe you have had a chimney fire previously I highly suggest contacting a certified chimney professional in your area to perform a video inspection. There can be unseen damage to the clay flue liner of mortar joints between the tile sections that would pose a safety risk. Cleaning the chimney and a top down visual inspection is a good start, but after 15 yrs servicing chimneys I can't tell you how many times I've seen safety issues doing a video inspection that aren't visible during a regular visual check. Especially concerning is the fact that your chimney runs directly through the center of your home, and is surrounded by combustible material (framing, roofing, etc.) To all the homeowners out there, I would suggest hiring a professional for this job. In the Chicagoland area this service runs about 150.00 but the peace of mind is priceless. Not to mention should there be a chimney fire that causes damage to your home insurance may have a problem with the lack of professional maintenance. Just my 2 cents.

That black stuff is actually red and the roof is red because the rain washes it down from the top of the chimney where it builds up. I know this because today I was helping my neighbor (a little elderly lady) with her clogged chimney and I got some on my hand and for a second thought I was bleeding but it turns out it's just runny creosote. When spread thin it's red but when it accumulates it darkens into what appears black.

So... This flue needs to be inspected by a chimney professional. The terra cotta clay tiles are easily damaged by a high temperature event and even if you don't "SEE" something there is likely damage to the lining. Since this is a chimney that is wrapped around by the house it is best to play it safe. A CSIA certified chimney professional will be able to put a camera into the flue to see what is really happening. I am a DIYer but... Don't play with fire.

It would be wise to have that chimney re-lined with a stainless steel liner. They come with insulation as well to keep the flue gases burning hot to help avoid something like this from happening again - a solid investment in any wood heat system!

Next cleaning will be a BREEZE in fact the Kreosote will usually just DROP down on its own when the temperature changes, but it takes all of about 5 minutes once you are up on the Roof for a real cleaning with a BRUSH. Best investment I ever made, and you can sleep at night cuz No way you will ever have a Chimney fire.

Chimney's are not a straight up thing, you can't just look up them. More so if you have a wood stove, that requires taking everything apart to look into it. But, YES always inspect your chimney or flue or hire a professional if you do not know how.... at least twice a year, once before fire season and at least once about halfway through. Even if it does not burn your house down, when a chimney fire starts lots of sparks/embers are released and can start forest fires.

Why anyone runs a wood stove instead of a coal stove is a mystery to me.. we roast in this house with anthracite coal for less than $120 per winter month and it doesnt ever get shut off in winter. It's good exercise and it's the "great outdoors" and all that happy horseshit. Seriously, I love it. Plus, a coal fire does nothing aesthetically, while a good wood fire is worth more than its BTUs in "warmth." And, if you're environmentally uptight, wood is a renewable resource, unlike coal.

Floors are ancient (not a single spot that is level) Walls are also ancient - but have had many layers of new stucco'ish material. The walls are straw and clay (can see this some places where there are cracks in the stucco). Many unknowns about the house. We know it is at least 400 hundred years old as the city records go back 400 years...and the house is there. However there are no records past that.

    Why I never burn pine

  • @bunnywarren

Pine isn't a problem if it's properly seasoned. Unseasoned it's bad but when it's been left for a few years in the dry, it will burn quickly and very hot. Great if you want to get some heat into the stove before putting on other wood like ash. Western US they mainly burn pine/fir and don't have any problems because they know how to season and burn it. The problem is that it has become trendy to have a log burning stove and people don't know how to use them.
