Better to build a hush box for the tech than for the kids... 😁 Would be interesting to put a temp sensor by the fan out of the projector, and compare the temperature for it standing free and living in a box.

Hi! So what can you say about this build? How’s the sound improved and do you have any problems with thermals? I’m thinking of building something similar but as with all new unknown things there’s a lot questions.

Why no sound demo after all the work?

nice work & labor there, I would suggest you to place noctua into inside corridor , and not leave too much space on the outer wall of box, this will be more efficient both in terms of cooling & sound dampening. extra tip sound likes to escape from space so the lesser space the better. so you better use 92mm fans

What Size fan did you use ? Any particularly quiet brand or type? Using the projector USB for power is genius

Its a NOCTUA pc fan, those are very silent. 12centimeters in diameter

Interesting Hushbox you have there Yves. Never heard of using the projectors own usb port for power. A stroke of genius that. I have just bought the fan. i just checked it plugged in to the usb but im not sure whether to go ahead yet because the fan still seems to be a bit loud because its running at full pelt. I was wondering if it was slowed down slightly it would obviously be better but there again would it be able to suck enough hot air out of the projector. Perhaps i would also need a intake fan both running half speed maybe. I have tried just putting some cusions around the projector without blocking the fans and that seems to cut the sound of the projectors fans down quite a bit and makes movie viewing much better. Its a project I look forward to due to your idea. Thanks

Thanks justin, I wish you best of luck in yr build. My noctua fan also makes some noise when at “full pelt” as you said. But it’s a constant hum, the projector own fan has a life of its own. It would go loud AF, then silent, then back on full speed. Drawing attention like a 3y old :). We’ve recently added a small bluetooth speaker when viewing films and then you cannot hear the Fan at all. I’d love to see a pic of the end result sir. @@ProjectsandThings Yes am thinking of the best thing to do, One thing about the fans in my sim2 lumis projector is that they do run at a constant speed, No annoying variations. It s not really been a big problem but if i could at least minimise the sound it would be so much better. I have thought of just mounting it on the wall but there again the noise is not much better. Its just above my head at the moment. No real perfect solutions but i will try something. I will let you know how i get on. cheers.

Just one fan? Don't you need intake and outtake?

The fan on the outtake faces out, which creates a lower pressure inside the box. The fan in the projector itself blows out into the box. And since you have lower pressure in the box . The outside fresh air on the intake side gets sucked in. (Or pushes itself in, depending on if you look at it as a physicist or a vacuum salesman:)

Great bit of DIY. What would you express the reduction as in percentage? Absolute nightmare trying to quieten a projector because of the bloody heat. Soundproof=Waterproof in principle but so difficult when you need some bloody airflow!

Thank you!! I don’t have a decibel meter but I’d say a 40/50% reduction in sound. The box almost kills all the fan noise from the projector itself, and most of what you hear now is the quiet hum of the Noctua fan on the side, which keeps thr airflow good and the projector has never overheated.

@@ProjectsandThings thanks for the info! I'm going to have to give it a crack, my projector is a big 4k thing though, makes a gigantic racket and can actually heat a room from cold 😂 probably need an empty room size box to ensure enough air flow in fairness

@@shifterverse wow, good luck! My box is about 4x the size of the actual projector, if that helps anything. And maybe if it’s a bigass projector, it could be possible to change out the built in fan for a quiet one? Just a thought .

this is a sure fire way to kill your projector!

Is there anywhere to buy something like this? I don't have a woodworking shop in my garage.

Hej Bridget, sorry for the late reply, I don’t know is the only answer I can give you. I assume they make these for higher end projectors that need to be built into ceilings etc, cause they make A LOT of noise. But for smaller ones the only thing I’ve seen is s DIY solution. Perhaps ask a creative friend or neighbor to make one of these? All the best!

Would a remote control still work through all the insulation?

It only works through the glass, there is a sensor right next to it. But I only need the remote to turn it on and off. The other settings are a one-off as I mostly attach the same laptop to it

Hi Roger, the sensor for the remote is next to the lens, so I can point my remote at the glass at the front and it turns on. After that it only has to do the exact same thing each time, so the remote is merely an on-off switch:)

So far so good Joost. Gisteren nog een filmpje van 2u bekeken en nadien was het in de die bak gevoelsmatig niet veet warmer dan als ie 5min bezig is. Moet nog eens checken met een thermometer voor echte referentie:)

@@ProjectsandThings ik zou de fans via apart usb voeden of dikke capacitor zodat die toch zeker 5min nadat projector uit is kan nakoelen, zal de levensduur tegemoet komen 😅

Het is geen getemperd glas Rik. Je hebt een punt:). Wel , als het ooit tot een barst of kleine explosie komt, dan zet ik er een getemperde versie in. Merci voor de tip :)

That shop is huuuge. Even by American standards. Mine (near Zurich) is a garage that can't even fit a car :(

Good thing I don’t do American standards:) it’s a place I rent here in Belgium. I had a tiny gardenhouse first, then a tiny garage and when that was too small I found this shop. I found out that, once I got a bigger shop, bigger projects started coming in, so I can afford to keep the lights on in here :)

​@@ProjectsandThings yeah I'm unemployed at the moment (partly by choice), and would love to build some tables to help with rent but the thought of dealing with 2m boards makes me hesitate. I do somehow have an SCM combo slider, bandsaw, and dust collector in there though, so I should make something soon!
