Why You Must Know This Boxing Defense Style. Pros to the Philly Shell.

Why You Must Know This Boxing Defense Style. Pros to the Philly Shell. Tom Yankello of the ‪@WorldClassBoxingChannel‬ presents a few of the pros and pluses to the Philly Shell. Tom explains why you must know this boxing defense. There are very good technical reasons of why you want the Philly Shell to be a part of your game. You don't necessarily need to not know other dimensions, but you should be able to learn multiple defenses. For this video, Tom wants to talk about openings and distances with the Philly Shell defense. The angle you get when you are in a philly shell defense allows you to be half a man, which makes you half the size of the target. Tom explains why you can't keep your hands up when in the philly shell defense. Hands up are when you are in a more squared off position. Tom shows you the correct hand positioning for when you are standing in the philly shell defense position. This defense allows you to have a further distance from your opponent making you harder to get hit. When you are squared off you are much closer to your opponent who can more easily hit you. When you take that angle in the philly shell defense it makes it much harder for your opponent to hit you. Another thing people don't understand when you keep your hands up as your only defense, you are in real trouble. When you have your hands up, Tom shows you all the openings you have for people to easily hit you. Tom walks your through on how the defense protects you from several punches. Most great fighters have this defense in their arsenal. It doesn't have to be your only defense, but it is most definitely a defense style you should know how to utilize.

I’m an older fighter from the 60”s. Only boxed from the age of six - 14. However, our Coach was the best I ever seen, FRED STONER of GRACE HOPE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN LOUISVILLE KY. Before ALI there was RUDELL STITCH , he drowned trying to save his best friend. We all were Golden Gloves Champions. Speed can defeat the Philly Shell, and many defenses . Great information, you just have to have knowledge and skills to incorporate the different types of boxing. Louisville, Ky had great boxing programs, basketball, football took us from the boxing world. What I learned from my days as a fighter saved my life in the streets and I boxed in THE AIR FORCE. My oldest brother was more of a brutal punisher , my other brother was a technical fighter that was too pretty to fight, I was a mixture of both! Had to learn how to fight different styles. PROUD FIGHTER! Keep teaching - love your work!

It's biggest advantage is that you can generate power with the pre cocked right hand thats surprising for opponents that are close. Also the right hand for the eye of your opponent is virtually still.....for the first 8 inches of motion.

One thing i picked up on was coach saying you can raise your lead glove to catch a punch if you see it last second whilst in the philly shell, this isn't necessarily wrong but i would say generally it works the other way around, elbow and shoulder blocks are often used instinctively by all styles of boxer when they find their gloves out of position (because it is quicker to raise the elbow or shoulder than it is to retract the glove from its wandering position).

I think a lot of people feel that if they use the philly shell they’ll be possible to hit but it doesn’t work inside the pocket. Only at range & if they try to close the distance you’re going to have to clinch. Which imo is a huge part that nobody talks about. Great video though coach!

Why don’t opponents of this style just step outside the the left foot and push constantly to his left thereby virtually eliminating his right unless he turns in your direction of movement, which you would know in advance? I know most fighters don’t do this, but I don’t understand why they don’t. I do MMA and for me, I just move in and dump them in this position, but I am curious from a pure boxers point of view, why you just don’t always pressure left gaining a better angle and forcing them to turn? I am sure there must be a reason, but I don’t know it.

Hi Jerry! The Philly Shell derived from the Old School Boxing Stance of Joe Louis, Ezzard Charles, Sugar Ray Robinson. Those are my go to guys for the best ever boxing stance and basic fundamentals ever. Charles used a lot of tools that are considered Philly Shell tools. Louis and Robinson did at times as well. I think predominantly the best boxers ever have the basic fundamentals of the Old School Boxing Stance. Which in turn makes them half a man, weight predominantly on the back foot. Rear hand placed in the front of the face, lead hand about shoulder level for the most part. Guys to watch with this Foundation are ALL TIME GREATS! Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Louis . Ezzard Charles Rocky Marciano, Charley Burley, George Benton, James Toney, Sugar Ray Leonard, Benny Leonard, Willie Pep, Pernell Whitaker, Jersey Joe Walcott, Floyd Mayweather, Roy Jones Jr as a Middleweight! These guys had the Old School basic fundamentals and most of them used the Shell at times some used it more than others but regardless a lot of the components of it are in grained in the stance!

There is no right and wrong way. There is effective and ineffective. Canelo is pretty much square on, high guard and that is natural for his body. Also in this stance, the jab might be nearer but the right shoulder is further and will take longer time to reload.

Unfortunately, the kids these days want to box this way before they even learn any other guard. They aren’t even comfortable with being hit and they’re trying to block punches with their lead shoulders. Mayweather didn’t use this guard as an amateur. This isn’t the only guard he uses and he also doesn’t use it against southpaws. I want to teach it to my amateurs but I feel like giving it to them too early may be a mistake. Good explanation of the benefits though.
