    I'm the 4th owner of a 2006 RX8 Shinka. I bought the car with 106k km's and it now has 130k km's in my years of daily driving it. I replaced a lot of stuff that was basic wear and tear(plugs, coils, brakes, clutch, tires, fuel pump, suspension). Never had a break down or not started and still on original engine. They can be reliable if you do your research and maintenance. It's better to do a rebuild earlier than later, which I do plan on rebuilding it myself in the next year. Don't sleep on this car, they will go up in value over the next decade. The handling is phenomenal and punches way higher than its pay grade. Masterpiece of engineering.

    I owned an 04 for about 2 years. In those 2 years, I was only able to put maybe 200km on it. It was almost always crippled by some major engine issue (also doesnt help that any rwd car is basically useless in the winter where I live). However, those few kms I got to drive this car were easily the best of any car I've ever owned. It handled like a scalpel in the hands of a surgeon on aderall, the transmission shifted like butter, and the engine wanted nothing more than to scream at 8000rpm. Beautiful, focused, thoroughly inspired driving experience. If only rotaries were given a better chance at developing (not being banned from major races would have helped greatly), this would be a modern classic of a sports car.

    Been a rotary guy since 1991. Flooding is a direct result of weak compression combined with contaminated spark plugs. There is a way to start the car to move it and shut off WITHOUT it flooding. The key is to put heat into the combustion chamber so it can burn off the excessive fuel that's dumped in during a cold start. Most newbies and old schooll rotorheads like the idle to warm up. This takes too long because the 9lb rotor is absorbing all the heat from the combustion and when you shut off quickly, the spark plugs are still wet with fuel so they don't spark well in the re-start. That's when flooding happens. To avoid this, simply start the car and REV to about 3k for as long as the air pump is running. Could be 30sec to 1min depending on outside temp. What you're doing here is causing the plugs to rapid fire and put LOTS of heat into the combustion chamber really fast. Once the air pump turns off, move your car and you will be able to shut it off and it will restart because you just now burnt off all the excessive fuel that was dumped in during that cold start. This same warm up method is also how I daily my 8 when I had it. Start car, 3k rev till airpump turns off and then go drive the car. I never let my car idle to warm up. That's actually the WORSE thing anyone can do to a rotary because all you're doing is building up lots of carbon deposits because the combustion chamber takes too long to heat up. The faster you warm these engines up, the less carbon you will create, which helps reduces carbon build up (which is what kills these engines over time).

  • @kharijoyner1474

    @kharijoyner1474

    Жыл бұрын

    Glad I saw this mentioned, I do the same thing practically, and agree idling is worse for carbon buildup. Often even just turning on the car and going for a drive right away keeping rpm’s at or below 3k can have the same effect too. Or revving to 3k before shutoff but I rarely even need to do this on my 07

  • @VinsUplifting

    @VinsUplifting

    3 ай бұрын

    There ways to get rid of the carbon, even if you warm up the car at idle, you can use cataclean every few months and you can redline it regularly. There are some people who modified the ECU to have higher idling revs. I think warming up the engine is extremely important.

  • @rotaryperfection

    @rotaryperfection

    @VinsUplifting Warming up is important as long as it's accelerated. Now, if you're doing the cat clean thing on a regular, then it doesn't matter.

  • @rotaryperfection

    @rotaryperfection

    2 ай бұрын

    @llavero5 I know from experience because I broke down my enigne with 108k and the bearings were perfect. Also, the rotor bearings spin at 1/3rd the speed of the crank. Edit: If this were piston, I would understand your concern as many more parts need lubrication. Rotary, it's only bearings. No valvetrain to worry about. In my cold start videos with my 20b, you can clearly see how fast oil pressure comes up. Keep in mind that the larger displacement 20b uses the same oil pump as the smaller FD 13b.

    I've owned 3. Currently have 2. If you're familiar with them and you're willing to put in some extra work to make it more reliable, then it's great. I'd recommend doing a lot of research before buying. Understand what you're getting yourself into. Make sure you have some extra money to perform the reliability mods as soon as you get it... and drive it hard. I warm up the car properly and redline it every single time I drive it. Every. Single. Time. My first car went over 100k miles without a single failure. Never left me stranded. Never once had a starting issue. Not one single problem. The engine still had good compression when I sold it. The key things you need to do are, premix, upgrade the ignition system, remove the cat, add the SOHN oil adapter, and change the oil every 3000 miles with a high quality 10W40 synthetic oil.

    @art_n5x I'd say it's more true with some cars than others. You can get away with neglect on a Toyota or Honda, not with a rotary motor or any other car that has a fickle maintenance schedule. The point I'm trying to make is, if you want to own one, you need to own the extra responsibility too. I'd be willing to bet that most rx8 owners probably shouldn't own one because they fail to step up to the ownership requirements.

    Back in 2010 when I was considering a replacement for my aging A4 quattro, I'd decided I didn't want another 4 door sedan so I considered the RX8. My first car bought new was a 1979 RX7. I'd been wanting an RX7 since they had come out the previous year. It was so much fun to drive in Michigan summers - winters I put it away and drove a beater. I eventually sold it with ~75000 miles on it. It was actually quite reliable but then I took good care of it. So, the RX8 was definitely a consideration and it was certainly fun when I test drove it. But I got the distinct impression that this was likely a last gasp for rotary engines even those from Mazda. Ultimately, after a fun track day sponsored by Hyundai promoting its new Genesis Coupe, I decided to go with that car instead. I opted for the 3.8L V6 with the ZF automatic transmission (I didn't like the feel of the stick and I was not alone in that!) I'm still enjoying that car and may have to keep it awhile longer as, sadly, there's not much in the way of affordable sports cars any more. Maybe I'll look at the new Z or a Supra since Hyundai seems to have abandoned the sports car segment.

    I’ve got a 2011 RX8 R3. I absolutely love it. It’s at about 98k miles and a paper weight currently. The engine is consuming coolant. Previous owner seized the catalytic converter then gutted it. The issue was there when I bought the car. I’ll be installing a brand new engine from Mazda, and rebuilding the one in it. But a huge thing to look out for when inspecting the car is the cat. These cars hate cats. So make sure if it has one on it when you test drive it, immediately check under the car to see if it’s glowing. If so prepare for the rebuild promptly if you buy.

If you do you will lose the compression early in a rotary motor. Understand the motor and "Drive it like you stole it" should be the motto. It is a 17 year old car. Everything still works. Will go 200 mph on the track and gets about 21 mpg. Is there another 21 year old car that will go 200 mph and get better gas mileage and handle as well? And each RX8 that is left will be a collectors item. Probably the he last rotary motors to be made.

    And here we go with the fairy tales. I'd bet that you never got to the factory top speed of 170, on track or off. Sub 300hp means you can, not that it's easy or that you can find the run out to do it. 200mph typically means 500+ hp and more importantly, torque. At least you didn't claim a 20,000rpm redline or something. Rotaries are good at one thing, endurance racing. That's it. The one place it actually mogs piston engines. Otherwise they're just a PITA inefficient motor with a laundry list of issues. Mazda only kept at it because they needed some way to stand out, so much that they made the lulzy REPU. The RX7 would otherwise have been an ugly 240Z knockoff, an off brand Celica Supra. Also ran Starion.

    Sohn adapters are common in series 1 or pre-2009. The series 2 motors have improvements to oil delivery but premixing is still recommended. Same for the starters. Early series 1 starters were not up to snuff and was upgraded later on. Upgrading the starter is also a common upgrade. It will help with lower compression and flooding.

    You should swap GSLSE rx7 rotor housings to get the peripheral exhaust ports. Then you get the old school brap (for bridgeport) and also reduce carbon build up which the multiside ports of the renesis was notorious for. Look up Hybrid Renesis. I think boost works better for this configuration too but the seals need to be changed to atleast carbon. Kyle Mohan Racing has tons of videos on this.

    I owned an NB Miata. Then I had kids. So I drove an RX-8 for 7 years. Got it to 160k on the original apex seals. Then I had more kids, so I sold it. All these years later with the ability to buy a weekend toy, I picked up...another NB Miata. I enjoyed a lot of things about the RX-8, and it had a lot of redeeming qualities. But I don't think I'd ever want to own another one. I don't have a ton of time to be performing maintenance, I never trusted the average mechanic to deal with it, and when I do get to enjoy the weekend toy I want to just get in and go.

That being said, the one thing I absolutely hate about my particular experience is this: I can't for the life of me figure out why my clutch master and slave need to be replaced almost every year. No big problem Deflooding if you follow the handbook. One ssv solenoid, 4 tyres, two roll bar links and new spark plugs. All DIY stuff. Regular oil changes, with Mazda mineral 5w30 and that’s all. Also all the recalls done. No mods. I and everyone else love my Rx8 2.6. Selling it is out of the question. I thought all Renesis were dual 1.3, making them 2.6.

Most the problems have been around since the first rx was released but the most common thing is to rid the cat and premix to any model prior to 06 as after 06 they introduced 6omps but really best bet would be to remove it and stick to premix then you can move to a heavier oil 20/50 20/60 as its also the shet factory spec oils that kill these engines along with carbon build up off it tryna burn the oil in the engine if you owned rotas before its a simple recipe keeping these fresh and alive for a longtime

On the other hand I was the opposite. Not only do i love rotary cars, losing it for so long early on made me very attentive to anything that could potentially cause problems so i stayed on top of the oil, revved it out at least once per drive, changed fuel pump, performance spark plugs, coil packs, basic stuff. Capable of 250+ MPH top speed if tune right? It HAS the potential to compete with some WRXs and Supras out there. But bein' already oil-thirsty and all, I dunno how it might adversely or negatively affect the engine's overall longevity tho. the sohn kit is not an option, its necessary for the engine to make sense engineering wise. The other sensible thing to do would be to fit rx7 apex seals, but that requires machining and at that point might as well build a hybrid renesis/13b engine like kyle mohan is doing. Its a flawed engine as is, but general engineering knowledge is enough to sort it out. The rust is a bummer though, unless you really like welding.

  • @sloppyjoe2974

    the sohn kit still uses the omp but just injects whatever premix you feel like using so if you take care of your carbon deposits its not an issue. using rx7 apex seals is borderline useless and 2mm apex seals have been proven many time to handle power (which doesn't matter in an rx8) and the 2mm have less friction than the 3mm.
