Why you CANNOT break spaghetti in two pieces?

Scientists have found a way to snap a piece of dry spaghetti into two pieces.
The long-time challenge has been to grab a single spaghetti stick and, holding it at both ends, bend it until it breaks.

After watching the video, I went to the kitchen looking for regular spaghetti and wanted to try it myself. Exactly as in the video, I held the spaghetti by the two ends and stretched it until it breaks. I tried the whole thing several times, but each time the spaghetti just broke into two pieces....

I just wanted to know why cooks always flip out when someone breaks the pasta before cooking it. This video doesn't explains that.

There is no specific reason why you shouldn't break pasta before cooking it, but not breaking it will keep it's consistency around the fork. That's how long pasta is supposed to be eaten. If you break your long pasta in half, you'll have shorter strands that are a pain to be eaten.

@@mts2457 it's a pain to eat broken spaghetti and often times I don't enjoy it. It's an Italian tradition to twirl the 🍝 when it's long. Me personally I don't break spaghetti.

The explanation is quite easy. As the spaghetti stick bends strongly, there are a bunch of cracks forming on one side, but only one of them will snap eventually if you bend it to the extent. If you then bend it to the opposite side without snapping, the cracks will propagate through the whole diameter, so it will break a lot easier after that. So, after the first crack is snapped, the spring force is released, and it will bounce backward, and then it will lead to the secondary cracks snapping in a cascade as they have been weakened previously.

That's really why Italians tell you not to break the spaghetti you didn't hear from me. They just don't want little spaghetti pieces in their floor.

I didn't make any calculation however the final explanation I'd knew discovered by my own imagination without any research , since first time I've seen this riddle , does it mean that I'm over smart or something like that ? Since now thanks ... ✌🏾
