Reminds me of Arnold Schwarzenegger who when asked about how he planned for being a world bodybuilding champion, a famous international actor and State Governor, he replied something akin to he never thinks about what he's going to do after his current objective. He only focuses on that one objective, "the one thing". Thinking about future plans diverts necessary energy and cognitive attention away from attaining the current objective! When he was a bodybuilder, he didn't think that much about becoming an actor and when he was an actor, he wasn't thinking about becoming a politician. He puts everything into attaining one goal at a time, it's all or nothing. 100% focus on one thing only.

reminds me a part of the book that said that, you see people with alot of skills is because they have dedicated time throughout their life, well this is a bit inspiring for me actaully, because i think i am sort of a multipotentialite, this is a better view for me then actualyl just dedicating my self to oen thing honestly because that is so boring for plus i feel like i am diverse, the thing with being a multipotentialite is that you, choose how in depth you want to be in each thing so that solves, the balance thing actually

Having read numerous comments below, I wanted to contribute by saying that the book DOES NOT say that you should choose one passion/thing in life at the cost of all others. It's more about focussing on "one thing" - the most important thing - at a time, such that, by doing it, everything else becomes easier or unnecessary (obviously within a context). As you well know, our lives are full of things that pull at us. Personally, I might waste a lot of time doing things I *know* are not the best thing I could do, yet I do them anyway. But I might also spend a lot of time doing something I genuinely think is the best thing for me to do at the time, and I end up dropping the idea later for whatever reason. The important message of the book, which, if we think about it, is that we can't usefully divide our focus and expect quality results in everything. Something's got to give. So, if we choose the "one thing" that makes the most sense, and if by doing it, it creates a domino effect on some of the other things we have to do, then we've made a good choice. Like a gentleman who wrote earlier said, he has 2 passions - music/signing and wrestling. Coincidentally, I love music and singing. In fact, I used to record my music. And like him, I found that other interests started to take over. If they are hobbies and neither is linked to an income stream (whether immediately or hopefully one day), then you can weigh up what time you have (or can make) available to dedicate to each of those (if you want to do both), and then FOCUS completely on one of them at a time. As I mentioned to him, if there's a wrestling technique he wants to master, perhaps commit to a set period of time to master it before working on another song. And when working on that song, don't stop between verses to do a bit of wrestling - unless he needs a break, and the wrestling is just to escape the studio for a bit. In closing, it all depends on what the "one thing" is as to whether or not you can have other things potentially competing for your time and passions. If you want to perfect something or start a business based on a hobby, then that needs focus while other things can go on the back-burner. There's always a way of determining what the "one thing" is or needs to be, and the "one thing" is not the same as the ONLY thing". Rather, it's "the one thing - until the next thing", but managed well. :)

As an aspiring filmmaker I need to master several key areas to make better movies: Writing, Producing, Directing, Camera & Lighting Technicalities, Editing, Selling, etc. So doing one thing at a time when I need it makes sense instead of learning it all at once.

I guess I'm afraid of somehow losing on opportunities if I dont learn things within the time period I've set for myself..... +Miles Bissay Nah. There are too many things to learn, and that is just one discipline alone (guitar/gym/etc.) Recall the 10,000 rules? I assume so, in case you are a fan of this channel. Anyway, it takes that long to be really, really good at something. Imagine you wanting to master... 5 different things. Now you need 50,000 hours to succeed. Now, I'm not going to talk about the probability of you actually being able to do it, that's a different issue. Try converting those hours to days. If you do them all continuously, without sleeping, it'll take you 2083,333 days, or 69,444 months. And if you can only dedicate 10 hours to your training, then guess what? 5000 days, or 166,67 months or almost 14 years. Good luck.

In the study that prompted the 10,000 hour rule is based on the average amount of time spent practicing by very promising violinist in Berlin. Here is an article on the matter: www.salon.com/2016/04/10/malcolm_gladwell_got_us_wrong_our_research_was_key_to_the_10000_hour_rule_but_heres_what_got_oversimplified/

The interesting thing about self improvement is the question, why should we bother with all this stuff? Were do these motivators come from? Are there definied by the media, magazines or by what we consider a good lifestyle? Was it like that 10, 20 or 30 years ago ? This demand from the person of being sucessful at least in one area?

Great video, one of my favorite books. These are my notes on the book: 1. Make a to-do list according to the 80/20 principle and keep narrowing it down until you've got 1 thing that causes most of your effects. 2. Multitasking is a myth because we forget the cost of task switching. Don't multitask. 3. Form 1 habit at a time, because you don't have enough willpower to do more. Give it 66 days to establish and you can go on to the next. Whenever a habit is established, it doesn't need that much willpower anymore, so I think this is probably the closest way to the 'balanced life'. 4. Willpower is like a battery, it runs out. Do the most difficult stuff early, when you still have the mental energy. ( Note' Willpower is also like a muscle, you can train it through stuff like meditation. Great book; Willpower by Baumeister and The Willpower instinct by McGonigal ) 5. Think big, if you aim for the moon you'll land among the stars, etc. Set goals twice as large so your actual goal is guaranteed. Hope they are useful.

Marc Tjoe Fat I don't understand point 5, if you're always setting high goals then won't you never reach the goals that you set, and get discouraged? Also, you mention aiming for the moon and landing in the stars, wouldn't setting goals too big be like aiming for the stars but landing on the moon? It's all relative to the goals you set, so coming short of every goal you set could be considered a failure.

  • @marctjoefat

    @marctjoefat

By thinking big and setting high goals, it doesn't mean you can't achieve them. The gist of the message is that by thinking bigger, you'll achieve bigger things. ( I guess the author thinks most people set small goals ) Yeah I think you're right on goal-setting. A too big of a goal will result in discouragement, a too small of a goal will result in lack of challenge. Kinda like the book of flow. (Source: Flow - Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi) Note' if you do set high goals, make sure you have a follow-up goal after you have accomplished your initial goal. (ex. Henry Ford's high goal was to democratize the automobile. However, once he reached the goal, he didn't have a follow-up goal and you can look at the history records to see what happened next) (Source: Built to Last - James Collins) The moon and stars thingy is a saying.

Best video I’ve watched. I’ve had this problem for years trying to do too many passions all at once, and I’ve got nowhere with any of them because I’m not focused. It’s hard to choose just one thing when you have a lot of interests, but the only way to be really successful in something is to FOCUS and master your craft in one thing. You can always do something for a few years with focus. Then move on to something else after, that’s what I’m going to do.

Same here but i still give myself this motivation that I can do two things at once and still understand in depth both as far as going to convince myself that I can have two careers at once. Namely structural engineering and software engineering like I so badly want to be good at both want to be able to builds webapps but also design buildings. Both fields are completely unrelated and within structural engineering I have passion for interior design and architecture and guess what after two years I've wasted two years and become good at not a single thing. So I guess I gotta let go and hold on to one thing and get good and ignore the bitter fact that I won't and can't be good at multiple things atleast for now ....

Life works for me like a recipe: there is one major ingredient (one field to try to be a success, which is my profession), and if I want an exiting meal I have to put some "seasoning" in it (playing musical instrument, do some sports, reading, listening music, do something creative). Since these "seasonings" are just a pinch of my time, I don't feel them bothering my major goal. They spice up the journey. ;)

( I allways try to find weaknes , weak spots - and the amplitude of the subjects at hand is so big that it simply is imposible to not to make mistakes ) There allways are weaknesses in any strategy plan or philozophy.. Be trying to find them you actually push you self to think to " work " on every single statement as well as the way it fits or afects the segment and by so the whole rest .

I spent more time planning reading and daydreaming rather than actually doing. Over time, I've come to learn some of this book's aspects naturally, but I can still be a scatterbrain, so it really helps to have someone put it in concrete terms. Great Vid :)

Great video! Simple and to the point. When I was 18 years old, I was trying to box and train for a bodybuilding show. Both of my coaches made me stop and told me I had to make a decision in which direction I needed to go. Best lesson I've ever learned and it worked for 10 + years. But today.... I seam to struggle again. I'm in the 2nd read of The 1 Thing and doing the work. This book has hit home for me. Thanks for the share.

the key, imho, is finding a way to integrate your lifestyle with your goal. for example, i often go to the gym for 2 hours a day namely because i need a break from doing what is im focusing on. working out is meditational for me. and when i come back from my workout i feel refreshed to continue doing what i was doing. but i get your point. thanks!

I can’t believe this video found me. I got into self-improvement last year, and ever since then I’ve been trying to do and learn so many different things at once, AND wanted to be the best at all of them. I thought that it would make me a well rounded person. It stresses me out that I couldn't get to all of them either. Watching this video was hard though. I feel like I don’t have that one thing I really want to be good at. (I’m a high school student though, I should time to think more about it)

I'm always tempted to do everything. My one thing is filmmaking, or learning about it, but I'm also passionate about painting, and want to learn about and get more involved in composing music, running a KZread channel, philosophy, football... the list goes on :( I guess some of these things can at least be done in your down time. I find that best ideas and inspirations come when I'm doing something where my mind is free to wander and yet is concentrating on a task. Such as painting or.. even copying notes (that was when I was in school/ college, obviously)

While this idea does apply to the majority of the population, there have been people in the past and still are living among us in the present that have mastered more than 1 thing in their life. *Leonardo Da Vinci* is an great example- historically named as the "universal man" he was "an Italian polymath, painter, sculptor, architect, musician, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer." On the contrary, if you were someone like Da Vinci- you probably wouldn't be wasting time on youtube or watching these kind of videos. In conclusion I agree with the idea of picking 1 or 2(at the most) things to focus most of your time into achieving mastery.

Mozart also excelled as a composer. And we can mention a lot of geniuses that excelled at many things like Da Vinci, Picasso, Copérnico, Isaac Newton, Platón, etc. For normal people i think is more accurate to say that is best to focus on one thing if they want to excel. But if you want to excel at something that has some level of complexity, creativity is a must, so it´d probably be good not to focus all your attention in one specific area.

If anyone has read the 4 hour workweek, people don't necessarily want to be millionaired, but want to experience life as if they were millionaires. Mainly having the freedom to do what they want, when they want. If you want to be Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, etc, then this may apply, but for people whose purpose is to enjoy life and live in abundance, you can do all those things, albeit, you wan't be one of the top 1%. It just comes down to what you value in life.
