Why you are NOT growing Gunnera manicata NEW INFO!

For 150 years there have been two main hardy species of Gunnera grown in Europe; manicata and tinctoria. Recent research has shown what we THOUGHT was manicata is actually a hybrid which is called cryptica. In this video I'll be explaining some of the differences and how this affects how we grow these plants.

Best video ever! How can you top that, hope you do though. So much more fun than reading a research paper.

Hi Kris! I first learned about Gunnera from your channel, I LOVE giant plants. I'm located in Nova Scotia and I was so amazed to see one growing in-ground at our Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens, right along the Bay of Fundy. It is nestled in a forest grove, right on the upper limit of Zone 6b in Canada. I was shocked to see one here!

Well I never! I'm sure I was sold a Tinctoria as a Manicata. It's about 3 years old and not very big (1 metre) even though I feed it loads. I wish I had a Cryptica! Great video as always! Thanks Kris!

So glad you did this video kris 👏 thanks for clearing it up!! Any chance you can do a video on tetrapanax as that's another plant that has so much misinformation out there, like dose the Rex really exist. Thanks Tony 👍

Wonderfully in depth video Kris. Really well presented. I had no idea we weren't growing true Manicata. I'm trying it for the second time this year with some success so far. Been a while since I've owned this plant.

Hi Chris, I've subscribed to your channel. I'm new to this style of garden. I think it's absolutely fantastic 😀. Your knowledge is fabulous 👌. Could you, would you do a list of good suppliers who sell Gunnera plants ? I'd love one in my garden. I live in Staffordshire. Looking forwards to watching more. Julie

Most half decent garden centers will likely have gunnera in their catalog. Which one is always the question :) Cheers from a dutch 8a/8b exotic garden

Most are tinctoria in garden centres. Cryptica/manicata is often found in plant nurseries in the South West

From Wikipedia : Gunnera × cryptica is a hybrid between Gunnera manicata and Gunnera tinctoria. Both species were introduced into cultivation in Western Europe towards the end of the 19th century. The hybrid occurred spontaneously in cultivation, in Europe probably around 1873. Both morphological and molecular analyses have shown that plants widely cultivated in Britain and Ireland under the name Gunnera manicata were all the hybrid, and that the true species G. manicata is no longer found there. This situation may also be the case in Europe and other parts of the world. The hybrid is more resistant to frost and adverse conditions than G. manicata, which is likely to be why it has replaced it in cultivation.

@hooperb63 I guess if some have been imported directly recently there could be some but almost all in the trade will be from stock that's cryptica or tinctoria. I guess really the question is why would you want to grow manicata over cryptica? cryptica is hardier and can grow bigger.

I do have a gunnera in a large container, simply because if I move I can take it with me. Not sure which it is but it seems content enough! Had it for 4 years.
