Thanks Chis. This is an information rich guide to identifying Gunnera :-) It looks like I have 2 Manicarta and one Tinc!
Very informative thank you, I can now buy with confidence rather than buying the wrong one 😊
Excellent video Kris. I was actually searching your channel for this very subject the other day. And now you’ve done a video on it. Keep up the good work. Can’t wait for the update video for the whole garden
Great video as always Kris. Very interesting to see the differences
Couldn't put it any better myself Kris.
As always, thank you for the video Kris. I'm planning on buying a small manicata next year for a damp, but large area of my garden next year.
Great video Kris. There are some magnificent fully mature specimens at a garden not far from me, it’s a real spectacle to witness the sheer size of these babies when they’re fully grown. After years of hunting, I’ve finally managed to acquire two genuine manicata at the ridiculously low price of £12 each. I’m giving up the front lawn for them 😂

Fantastic! They're plants that won't disappoint
Hi kris great vid and very helpful just realised i had tinctoria but now ordered a manicata well fingers crossed its manicata i did message to check first.
Kind of relieved I have tinctoria! :)
Thanks Chris. I’m looking forward to seeing my main plant this year, haven’t fed yet but it’s 17c today and very humid, mild weather on the long range so feeding this weekend and going to push her this year as I’ve really built up manure and my own compost over last three years and I reckon this year will be really special
Fantastic information. Thank you!
Fantastic loved this..your plants are lovely!!!! Thanks for explaining and showing difference!!!!!!! ♡♡♡♡

Both of mine from Beth Chatto and Primrose are Tincs, very frustrating, thank you for this fabulous video guide
Love my Tinctoria but would also love to get my hands on a Manicata 😎
Many of the comparisons on the internet are confusing as they have me convinced every specimen I look at is both tinctoria and manicota. However If I am to go by the revelation in this video that manicata has no red in the stems or veins, I can only conclude that a true manicata is simply not available in the US unfortunately.
Very clear explanation of the differences. The two are much the same in New Zealand as your plants, although I think G. tinctoria can get bigger. A recent paper (Shaw et al. 2022, A new spontaneous hybrid in Gunnera subgenus Panke (Gunneraceae) widespread in the British Isles, with notes on the typification of G. manicata) says that material cultivated as "G. manicata" is actually a hybrid named Gunnera x cryptica. Again, the same may be true in NZ.
I actually prefer the tinctoria I love the Jurassic look and feel. Had it about 10 years on the edge of a pond. It’s about 5ft high 7ft wide so guess the pond is feeding it welll. . I’d still like a manicata if I can find room for it. Thanks for the information at least I know not to sell any.
Ok, so I might have a hybrid Manicata and tinctoria. White veins, M size height and leaves (it’s still young), T shaped leaves and compact blooms. I thought it was T, nursery (CW-Washington state - US) just said Dino plant. As far as I know it’s legal to grow T here. I started propagating last year, but I want to clarify which it is before giving/selling any. I wish I could share pics lol.
Hi kris can I take my gunnera indoors over the winter? It's only small. Thanks 👍🏾
can you use the hollow leaf stocks of the gunnera as straws or tubes?
Im planting Manicata, what size hole should I be digging? I'm going to line it with an old punctured rubber pond liner, what would you suggest back filling the hole with? Leaf mulch, well rotted horse manure and chicken pellets is what I have available would these be suitable, is it possible to over feed a gunnera
Hi Kris. Great video thanks. I have had my Manicata for 15 years. Its late July and it is large but many stalks are now collapsing under the weight of the leaves, which normally only happens in the Autumn. What has caused this and do I just cut them off at ground level? Your advice would be much appreciated, thanks.

The recent extreme heat has stressed them. Many now have crispy leaves or collapsing leaves.
Hi Kris, Will you be selling any of these as iv'e been busy making room for some lol, thanks for sharing this info.

Hi Yvette, sorry, they'll be none of these for sale
Hi I bought a plug plant Gunnera but as it's so small I'm unable to tell whether it is a Gunnera and if so which one. I'm unable to tell from your video. Is there any way I could send you some images please for your consideration? Thanks.
Great vid Chris. Don’t think mine is either. 10 ft flower spike with white flowers. Any ideas

I got a gm growing in a 4.5” pot it’s not very big but how long do I have to keep this guy in it? I keep it always moist mid to high 70s during day humid and 65 at night in temp controlled room how long should I keep it in this pot? My colocasia gigantea and others are doing amazing in this set up so I figure the gunnera will to I keep them all well moist bat guano mixed in h20 or super thrive for a watering once a week but not a ton otherwise it’s straight h20 any pointers? I also have 275 gm seeds I just started germinating any tips would be great

It seems that you have the invasive one Kris, so how is it invasive as I may have been given one, I’ll check in the morning. And if you have got an invasive one how do you prevent its invasive nature? Thanks, great channel

@@YorkshireKRIS thanks so I’ve since taken a look, it has one leaf with slight red veining but the stems are notably red. I think it’s a tinctoria. I was given this so no financial loss, what would you advise I do with the plant please Kris? Keep and be mindful or get rid?

Anyone in the US know how to get a manicata? I only find tincatoria online.
We were wondering why our healthy looking gunnera isn’t growing big! I’ve written back to the company and asked for a replacement. Do you think that’s the right approach?
