I tried, and the triangle went back straight into my nose which exactly the middle... i also tried few times and switch my focus, it seems i can control which eye wants to be dominant. However, i am not sure if the dominant can be maintained or switching unwillingly when i am shooting

    An easy way to check alignment is to crouch down and look straight down the line where the cloth and rail meet. With your head vertical (not cocked left or right) move your head back and forth a small amount to the left and to the right until the line looks perfectly straight. Observe where your chin position is relative to the line. This is where the cue should be when you are shooting. I see too many beginners automatically put the cue under their dominant eye which may or may not be their true eye alignment. Love your channel!

    I think this is one of the most important things to check when you starting going through down slope in pool. Every time it's happened to me I'd work specifically on eye alignment, then stance to fit that alignment, then stroke.

    Wow! this is such an "eye opener", literally! It's the first ever real deep tip I have ever gotten. Every other ones teaching like aiming system, angle references, markers, fundamentals and a whole lot of other stuff but have never even considered the player's eye condition which would render those everything almost useless. This eye alignment is what I actually have been struggling to find an answer for in my decades of playing this what I called "the greatest game of all"... until I saw this video. All along, I thought I just accepted the fact that my eyes are just a hopeless case of total wreck not being symmetric as my doctor said one side of my eye socket is prematurely formed rendering my other eye to be protruded and bulging out more. Terefore unequal vision on top of the fact that I already have double astigmatism. Altho I can't say this will make me a sudden pro bc I still have to deal with the fact that my eye grade kinda shifts differently so quickly from time to time. Either way, you've got yourself an instant subscriber with just this one vid! Thank you so much for helping me realize this.

    Thanks for the video. I've often wondered about this before and I'm curious as to how scientific these ideas might be. Difficult to test because how would you rule out placebo effects. Vision isn't a straightforward process, the eyes are a small part of it - most of it happens in the back of the brain. If you think about fine motor movements, say picking up a pin or a very small object, you're able to do this easily because your brain has learned through development (and evolution) how to locate objects in space. Obviously, if you wear glasses you might have different prescriptions for each eye but this is to do with visual acuity rather than spatial awareness. Despite endorsement from top sports people, I wonder if there have been any clinical trials on this. You could of course say who cares if it helps your game!

    What are you focusing most on as you shoot? Are you looking at the pocket where you want the object ball to go? Are you looking at the object ball? Are you looking at the cue ball where you want to strike the ball? I have noticed sometimes I have the habit of going up and down with my eyes from cue ball to object to pocket and back and fourth. Just wondered what you want to focus most of your actual aim and vision on.

    Side spin needs to be compensated with on aim. If you put lots of side spin on the cue ball it will transfer that side spin in the opposite direction to the object ball. This can be used to your advantage but on the shot shown to begin the video the reason the object ball went right is the cue ball was spinning left and that transferred to the object ball causing the miss. This isn't miscuing, it's called throw.

    Let me add in an odd one. When I was younger I was right handed and right eye dominant. It made things easy for both pool and shooting sports. Now, many decades later, I'm still right handed but left eye dominant. Not only that but I'm pretty sure my vision center varies depending on lighting and my degree of fatigue. I seem to have a hard time trying to get aligned over the cue consistently some days ... unless I close one eye when I get down to shoot. In my case I close my right eye but now I think it could have been either, just get rid of the visual competition. I know this is supposed to be a "no no" but it's the only thing I've found that works for me. To be clear, aim while up and use both eyes to see the 3D table. But when down I reduce the game to the 2D world it is. If anyone has a better crutch I'm all ears, and one good eye ! PS -. I wear glasses for night driving mostly, far distance correction. 20-40 in one eye, 20-50 in the other. Like any over 50 (?30?) I can see, in focus, the cue tip and cue ball but not the aim point at the same time. In pistol shooting I have to focus in turn on back sight, front sight, target to get the proper sight picture and alignment. Pool isn't much different. Long shots on 9' tables are not my strong suit.

    I think I'm right eye dominant but not entirely. When I close my right eye, the object shifts far to the left of the triangle. When I close my left eye, the object moves slightly to the right, so not as far as it moved left when I closed my right eye. My understanding is that if I'm totally right eye dominant, the object would not have moved at all when I closed my left eye, but it does move, only it moves far less than when I closed my right eye. How should I account for this non-fully-dominant right eye dominance? Or have I misunderstood something? Should I be aligning the cue somewhere between both eyes rather than directly under my right eye? I would appreciate your help @Sharivari 🙏

    Picked up playing again at 78. Quit for last 15 years accept a few games once in awhile. Grew up with the game 7th grade on. Played 9 ball mostly, then 8 ball, straight pool seriously in my 20s and on. To much drinking and gambling. Not good for my marriage with children. Anyway now that I started playing again last few months I will go on runs and then once in awhile on a long straight in shot that I use to drill center pocket and win the game I would miss right. Really upset me cause I never back in day missed those. I thought it was my stroke but it wasn’t. Thought it might be my age. It wasn’t!!! I watched your video last night on dominant eye and realized I am left eye dominant. Went pool room this morning and gave your advice a shot. I moved my head so cue was more under left eye. Drilled shots center pocket. Long, short , cuts. Played a pretty good player this afternoon 8 ball on regulation table. Won 7 lost 1. I’m back! 6:52 Thankyou🤝👌

    I think it's more complicated. For instance, I'm convinced I tuck my elbow when I hit hard. Are you hungry? angry? hangry? tired? dehydrated? in a hurry? just finish a tequila shot? Are you doing a draw? a follow? Stroking close to the rail or another ball? Leaning or reaching to get to it? Hitting hard or soft? Is the lighting on the table uniform? Are you being crowded? There are probably 100 things that can effect your ability to consistently hit where you want on the cue ball.

    Hope this isn't a stupid question coming from a rank beginner (which I am). Why not just shut one eye and just use the other eye for alignment? When I fire a pistol I do this to align the sights and it works pretty well.

  • @Sharivari

    Because in pool you are judging angles and 3D objects, because of that you need the image from each eye to get that 3D Vision. When shooting a pistol, you just need to align the rear and front, that's why a 3D image would not work.

    what is more important, avoiding a side spin on the cue ball, or directing the cue line to the right point on the ball to be pocketed?

  • @Sharivari

    @Sharivari

    Жыл бұрын

    That cannot be answered. At a certain spin the side spin won't have a big impact and it's more important to have the right aiming line. When hitting really hard or really soft, the side spin will actually mess the whole shot up, even when you are aiming to the right line.

    As a left-hander with dominant right eye (according to your test), I would have to get my right eye at least over the cue. Being not very flexible, what about using an eye patch (like a pirat) on the right eye? By doing this, the left eye is being forced to do the job. But I would loose the 2D-View somehow, wouldn't I?

    I'm in the same position as you, and, I haven't tried this yet, but it seems to me like an easy fix is to just simply not rely on your dominant eye. Just because your left eye isn't dominant doesn't mean it's any less useful, it's still an eye lol.

    I've learned that using the edges of the ball to align straight really helps. I don't agree with the "shoot down table and back to the tip to see if it's straight." If you're not exactly square to the table, you'll get a "micr-bank" and think your stroke has a flaw. If your vision is off, you could be bringing the ball back perfectly but are off stroke. ALWAYS practice with a target and don't use rails when perfecting your stroke, in my opinion. It's physics.

  • @brianmack6285

    @brianmack6285

    Жыл бұрын

    Certainly if your shot isn't squared up with the rail you hit, the situation you describe could be true. But if you aim to hit the far diamond, and do, you're pretty square. If you want put 2 balls just a bit further apart than a balls width on the far rail. If your off center but adding the precise amount of English to compensate, you'll likely hit one of the balls. Practice side to side as well as end to end. The English needed is different. Lastly I bring a simple line laser to my dedicated drill sessions. It helps to quickly align dots, balls, etc. It's also easy to see if you deviate (squirt or swerve) from a straight line. Maybe I should bring a mirror to chech that the rails are aligned with the diamonds ? It's also interesting just how intimidating (?) those balls can be. A person who can consistently hit the diamond and return to tip will now screw up. This is also a good way to focus on the aim point and ignore he distractions.

    I tried the triangle method and I just end up looking at the object with it equidistant to the edge of my hand in both eyes. This comes across as no dominant eye to me, or that I'm doing it wrong. Previously, I was already aware that I'm left dominant so this is strange to me. I can force objects to apear in my left or right eye as I'm thinking about it whilst doing it.

    I’m left eye dominant and I always automatically close my right eye and aim with just my left eye. Should I keep my right eye open aswell or do you think it makes a difference? Great vid btw👍🏼👍🏼

    I had my eye tests when i was getting my eye glasses and here is how they tested for my dominant eye. Form your fingers in one hand circular like a scope, stretch your arms as far as you can and select an object from afar and keep that object in the center of your scope hand while slowly moving your hand towards any of your eyes. Whichever your scope hand ended, that is your dominant eye. Just sharing it as i thought it was so cool. I knew the other method of closing one eye, but not this one.

    I found out that I am left eye dominant. Is it feasible to wear a patch over my right eye or to just close my right eye when aiming before I shoot?

  • @Sharivari

    No, that would make things a lot worse! You need both eyes for the 3D perception.

    For dominant eye test, what will happen when you have center vision (no left or right dominant)?

  • @Sharivari

    @Sharivari

    The test is just there to give you an indication in what direction you probably have to adjust your head position. If it's vision center, you're eye alignment is probably also below your chin, but you should do the other tests aswell.

    Choose an object further away. If you have even dominance the object should shift a little for each eye but usually one will still be more dominant than the other
