Why Workaholics Can't Stop Working

--------------------
There's a reason why you feel guilty when you have free time and choose not to work.
Your sense of self-worth depends on external validation and approval from society.
As a result, you lack the ability to internally validate your own self-worth outside the confines of your work life.
This is a significant issue...
You've been conditioned by society to believe that you have no time for yourself, and even if you do, you're not worthy of it.
Workaholics fear time.
In a world where time seems both abundant and scarce, mastering the flow of time becomes paramount.
Whether it's the failure to accomplish tasks within a set timeframe or the disappointment of not meeting personal milestones, the relentless ticking of the clock amplifies workaholics' feelings of inadequacy and frustration.
However, it's your perception of time as an adversary that leads you to feel that everything must be rushed.
That you must be in a constant battle against your own unmet expectations before the judgment of society.
When do you ever set aside time just for yourself?
You probably don't because the culture only glorifies productivity and achievement.
It demands that you produce something right this second!
#workaholic #psychology #shame #guilt
The culture has conditioned you to think that you shouldn't have time for yourself but only for your work.
The world only wants you to rush toward supply and demand.
To please everyone else but yourself.
Let this quote from Lao Tzu to sink in:
“Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.”
If you perceive time as your enemy, you will never set aside any time for your own life.
Therefore, you create mental blueprints of what you should accomplish only to find yourself grappling with the reality of unfulfilled goals.
You find yourself in a perpetual cycle of setting unrealistic expectations, falling short of your goals, and succumbing to feelings of discontentment.
It's a vicious cycle that erodes not only your mental health but also the true productivity that can be found when setting aside time to construct an authentic action plan for your own life.

A man's status is quite wrapped up in his monetary worth and the respectability of his career. Maximising his use of time in work is the method he perceives as his path to the attainment of his value. In truth, the balancing of internal and external not only guides us to our greater value but can also be a faster path to wealth if so desired. I also think that the time neurosis is the disjunct between the societal pressures of achievement and internal unconscious knowing, however close to the surface that be, that striving is fulfilling only to the extent that your whole self is invested in it.

Thank you! Working as an outlier in the medical field I witness many high performers have this -deeply traumatized. Wrapped up in identity and can only feel balanced with escapes that are more covert where the culture of the community is devoid. Or a desire to save, wounded healer, as a reflection for that which needs saving inside

I definitely think the driving factor for a lot of this is pain. Great insights by the way! The wounded healer could definitely be seen as an archetype that people embody or gravitate towards, certain careers foster that narrative. Reminds me of what is said in “The Genius of the Crowd” by Bukowski.

The reason is a split identity due to inflicted trauma, that was then reshaped into a false surface workholic personality by the environment parents/teachers.
