    I had the pleasure of seeing Flo Milli live in Atlanta last year and good GOD-- she came on stage, no backup dancers, and just WENT for like an hour. Perfect breath control, insane energy, every bar hit just like on the record, it was everything. Not to mention Maya the Don was an amazing opener and the crowd loved her. I think if you were to look up the biggest rap songs of 2023 the top 10 songs will all be by men if you don’t count doja cat. Again doja cat is massively successful and she does rap. Oldhead here. The ladies today offer way more variety and each type gets a play. From Milli to Lil Simz, Doja to Megan, Scarlip to Lato. It reminds me of the rich mid 90s feMC scene. Ladies also have way better delivery and beats. The men's delivery and beats all the same, its redundant. Ladies have been collectively ontop of the game since Megan blew out. The guys are just way too juvenile across the board. For someone that needs variety from guys, we have to go back to the Cole, Drake, Kdot, Migos even Travis and those are considered old now

    The rap game is fucked up for producers. They are doing more of the heavy lifting these days but because they're often not seen, it's very difficult for them to build clout and a following. Also they have to deal with rappers not paying them or even giving credit. Non-payment is even a problem with established big name rappers.

  • @kaison12205

    @kaison12205

    @@MrOzzification fr I’ve been developing my production skills for a few years and like it’s truly a bulk of music even pop and rock at this point utilize at least 1 engineer and that engineer is making at least like 1/3rd of the song. Be it just the vocal processing,arrangement, mixing and side chain or full pieces of the instrumental or the entire beat itself. And they don’t get much credit in any of the genre’s unless you’re a music nerd at this point. Or unless that producer themselves is already an artist. But in rap the not paying, not getting payed/credit is pretty fuckin absurd especially considering a lot of these new mc’s wouldn’t even have a flow you could listen to without an engineer to process their vocals. (Not to be some kinda purist I love vfx but there’s a difference between artistic use and it being a crutch cause you can’t rap or sing) let alone that the only thing decent is the beat. But the problem is unlike with songwriters who have bmi producers lack any substantial union and there will always be some teen or early 20 something willing to sell their developing skill for less.

    Feels like hip hop's hit it's grunge slump, and Rodeo was it's Nevermind. If you didn't live through the 90s, alt rock hit a huge creativity slump when Nirvana sent the grunge sound through the stratosphere. For years major labels completely lost focus on finding the next wave and lasered in on trying to find the next Nirvana. However, even that didn't go on as long as this cycle of psychedelic trap has maintained popularity. By the time Nevermind hit 10 years old the industry had moved on to nu-metal and indie rock was starting to come up, but Rodeo turns 10 next year and this sound is still dominating.

    They aren’t…none of the female rappers are packing venue caps at 3k on tours. This is coming from someone on the inside. They are promoted heavily but if you can’t put butts in seats you’re not running anything. Latto, Megan have never did solo tours and there’s a reason why. Touring dictates who’s the artist moving the needle and making labels money. I agree that it is boring and new artist aren’t making hits or trying to make hits. Yes the high pitched male rappers is funny. Yes the ladies are rapping but the guys who rap aren’t being forced to make hits to drop albums…that’s the difference. Artist would never drop an album if they did have a guaranteed hit to break an artist. Lots of context. Also a lot of artist don’t know how to perform. I’ve been to hundreds of concerts. Also rappers aren’t benign creative. 8:19 is a great point.

    I think the women in hip hop are more willing to try new things. Case in point, Megan Thee Stallion getting Spiritbox to do a “rock remix” of Cobra (I know rock/rap collabs are nothing new but it’s been a while since a high profile one happened so it might as well be new again, plus apparently Megan advocated for more screaming on the track than Spiritbox had originally put in). The song might not be as good as the Linkin Park/Jay-Z collabs but it’s still awesome to see and I’d love to see what a band like Spiritbox could do with more than 48 hours. Meanwhile, I think that if someone said the words “rock remix” to JPEGmafia he’d have a brain aneurysm. And that’s not even getting into the lack of artist development in rap these days. These kids blow up off a SoundCloud demo and maybe 6 months worth of club shows and are immediately thrown to the wolves to play Coachella and Rolling Loud with no experience and no one to guide them.

    The main reason is that the most important male artists either all died (X Pop Smoke and Juice WRLD) or fell off too quickly (Lil Baby, Roddy Ricch). The only real rap "superstar" still left that came after 2018 is Gunna. Everybody else is just a superstar from earlier with no one to pass the torch to. (I won't count Yeat because he has his own style completely). Plus Female rappers do a great job carrying the torch of 2000s Southern rap and its energy and rawness. It's a really fun and fresh brand of rap. Male rappers lost that rawness to Autotune and melodic trap beats.

I tend to lean towards stuff (of any genre) that feels like a more heartfelt, soulful representation of what people at the bottom are feeling. A lot of the female rappers are still talking about chasing money but it's done with that unapologetic ratchet vibe that a lot of the working class women I know completely embody. Most of the guys these days are coming from wealthy households and putting on a front as being hard but are completely out of touch, and you can feel that as a result their music isn't trying to say something. They aren't yearning for anything or trying to get away from anything, they just are distracting themselves from the lack of meaning in their lives.

Megan, ENNY, GloRilla, Noname, K Carbon, Rhapsody, Latto, Gloss Up, Slimeroni, Aleza, ScarLip... There's so much to dig into about this topic, but I do want to mention that a lot of female rappers have to constantly prove themselves against each other and to "keep their place" as a rapper. There's so much to be said about performance, the male gaze, sexuality, showmanship in regards to female rappers, but the truth is that female rappers are talked about. They are constantly under scrutiny and have to answer for the world's woes. I believe that it takes a certain personality to be able to show up confidently. There are a lot of people waiting for female rappers to fail and they're an easy target. I don't want to downplay the talent they have as performers, lyricists, and artists, but I also want to mention that there are more outside drivers that push them. Male rappers have more lenience to be mediocre.

    So tell me why Rick Ross was canceled for a lyric and cardi b wasn't fkr her offensive lyrics? Men also face scrutiny from people all the time. NWA faced actual scrutiny

    The incorporation of your video sponsor should be the gold standard for content creators. I was floored when u transitioned to the pitch. Perfection as w the rest of this video

    as a younger generation I appreciate your perspective. I agree with you and I do feel myself recently gravitating towards more female artists in rap because its just so much more hype and not only creative but everchanging

    Personally I think the “female” genre is just the easiest to exploit in this time. Just like gangsta rap was the easiest to exploit

    Omg I have been saying this the past 4 years or more! Yess! The male complacency is palpable.

    Im 24 and I always felt like the music that’s most popping will tell you what everybody in the generation it’s geared towards is on. A lot of the mumble sad rap came in with the era of ppl taking drugs that make them sleepy and put them down, everybody had these “anti social” “no new friends” attitude, no one danced at the clubs it was just ppl standing around or on some type of downer, etc. I kind of feel like we are coming out of this era though slowly but surely lol

    I may not be a fan of the choice of topics these female rappers may have but it’s the creativity of how they approach those topics that I love. Not a fan of taking about pum pum and whatnot, but if that bar involving it was funny or catchy, I’m here for it. Now, ice spice is a NO go for me. Love that you’re using Flo Millis “Nwber Gone Lose Me” beat, she’s been my new favorite female rapper! Great commentary as always!

    By far the funniest lightwork video you've put out. Had me reeling and feeling my age *hard.* Just wanna point out, hip-hop as a genre was considered undergound for years before it became mainstream so seeing underground artists having on average better albums and maintaining success for longer makes perfect sense from a fellow old head perspective. A return to form if you will. Never about being the best but being your best. Ect. Ect. "A documentary I'm definitely not going to be in" He sounds so convincing it almost makes us want to believe. /s
