It was weird seeing this one with its original title on Nuri's official channel, since he's one of the last people I'd think of to toot his own horn, but I'm glad I got that figured out 😀 As for the movie itself, it's absolutely amazing, has me thinking and pondering on it months after I watched it, director's cut must have a bit more of environment and establishing shots, because the location it was shot in wasgorgeous and my only complaint about the film itself might be that it wasn't used enough, especially given that Ceylan is such a master at landscape depiction in his movies (we had the ending shot but still 🙂)

I absolutely agree with you! This is the only movie I have ever purchased. In my 66 years, this is the best movie I have ever seen. The scenery, dialogue - everything was perfect!

It is great to see such an amazing, deep and personal movie with an internalized, sincere and enjoyable analysis. I think this is one of the greatest films of all time. somehow the long run time passes so quick

This movie has a lot of layers to unpack. You have an interesting point of view. I’d like to add each character in the film has their own personal biases, moral codes and ethics. We can understand their beliefs more as the dialogue unravels in the film. The beauty of this film is each characters beliefs are challenged by another characters opposing beliefs. For instance, when Aydin tells Nihal she is naive and too good hearted and it will come back to bite her eventually. There is an obvious truth here. And it’s later confirmed when she tried to help out Ismael & Hamdi’s family. Ismael throws the money in the fire. Only proving Aydin’s point. Many more examples like this too. The director does a great job conveying that life is messy and people are complicated. There is a lot of grey. It’s not just black and white. I connected with each character in their own unique way. Amazing dialogue and amazing cinematography.

Such a great take on this wonderful movie.

Thanks for this brilliant work! I kept saying "oh, so true" all through the video. I also enjoyed hearing about you. Just one point came to my mind and wanted to share it. It's about Aydın showing compassion to the horse but refusing to change his attitude towards people around. When I saw the movie, I had thought something else about this situation. I think Aydın acts this way because it is too difficult and fearsome to become a better person while everyone is watching. It feels like you "humiliate" yourself in their eyes. It renders you "weak and vulnerable" before others. Actually he can empathize with others as an emotionally intelligent man but he is trapped there, being not able to move. Somehow he became the person he is and now he stuck there. And he suffers for it. This difficulty to change is so great that it seems more preferable for Aydın to get lonelier in general and busier with his book. On the other hand, it is much easier for him to act compassionately to an animal, alone in the night, nobody witnessing any "humiliation or vulnerability". But it's been a long time since I watched the movie. These are just what I remembered that I had thought. This video made me want to watch it again. Also thanks for that :)

I don't know if you watched it but N.B. Ceylan's last movie ‘about dry grasses’is a truly great movie.

I also have seen this video in NBC's channel. Really a great analysis, I've enjoyed it. What I believe is that NBC criticizes the intellectual for only making judgments instead of putting effort into something (not taking actions as you refer to it) which is a very old debate and I agree with him. When you consider quantum mechanics it also holds true, it'll always be something different to the viewers' eyes than what it actually is because we can't capture the "moment", it'd be already gone (six feet under). The human being will and can't comprehend any "thing" how it is and that's why observing and judging for intellectuals will always be belittling compared to what the actual thing in reality is and displays. In addition, I think changing one's self is really a more difficult for people like Aydın because his ego would be extremely dominant over his will to change. When people get older they think they have collected things over time so that they dont want to risk of losing anything. Young is the time for a change.

Phenomenal video! Gonna watch this film tonight. I absolutely loved The Wild Pear Tree and Distance was very good, yet to watch Winter Sleep and Once Upon a time in Anatolia, his two "biggest" films.

like so many, I have found this video after NBC shared it in his channel. I have to say I disagree with you on one point in particular. You are not bad at articulating your opinions at all (Mr. Ceylan seems to think so too) I have watched this 25 minutes long analysis without pausing. It was a very well analysed and narrated video essay. I really enjoyed it and I think you will have more followers in the future. Keep talking about your passion, even if you don't have millions of subscribers, it is still a win in my book. I bought this movie a few years ago and never watched it. I did not know anything about the director at the time. I recently sold it. Then I watched Once Upon a Time in Anatolia this week. Wow. Yes, the action itself is arrogant and seems selfish, but he stopped acting as "the god" to her and let her free. He doesn't stop loving her, just stops to be a god. Very good English! Well Done! We can actually see & hear more of this for English Speakers who love Turkish Movies! More movies, even if its long (3/4 hours), but good(eg less violence against women&children!!) Series are too time consuming !

Yepppp turkish movies are ABSOLUTELY great😌😌😌😌

Although the film lasted three hours, I didn't realise how it passed like a very gripping action film. I was sad when the film ended.

I usually don't write comments but i couldn't stop this time. Well, i don't think one should extract message out of films, especially ceylan's films. And it's an opinion, everything is an opinion so don't mind this one as well. What I wanted to say is, since you've extracted it I still think 15 year old got it right rather than 23 year old rejecting toxicity. The thing is if one really sees the toxicity in oneself without being an observer but as a one, not separting toxicity from yourself than it dissolves, try it! Rather than rejecting oneself and making it a conflict within yourself, which is the foundation of every conflict that mankind has ever faced till date- and yes you cannot and shouldn't separate yourself as a different entity among mankind as well. Which the main character did at the end of the movie and accepted it as himself rather than his-toxicity. And that's when the conflict ended. Beautiful video though, loved it.

The acting is fabulous….all credit to NBC as he gets the very best from his actors…..Winter Sleep is awash with Huzun , a word the Turkish language uses to describe that collective grey, depression and directionless torpor that often descends on humankind as autumn turns to winter. The bickering and criticism both elevates and punctures the torpor, before those old simmering hostilities back down, retreating into to their corners till next time.

So much for making bad film essays... Brilliant stuff. Thanks!

What I look for when I'm searching for new creators to watch, is not, as you put it, 'standard video essays'. I look for personal stories, real emotions, the truth. And you give it to your viewers. As you started talking about yourself, I realised there's so much in common with me in your story: we're the same age, I shared many of your traits at the earlier stage of my life, also wanted to become a filmmaker. Don't feel ashamed of not doing 'standard video essays'. Be proud of doing honest art.

11:15 200 hour??? Hey anyway you are very good at explaining! I really like your way of explaining your opinion. And the fact that you spoke from your personal experience. From Italy keep it up!

So, the thing about this film is that it's not just about Aydin. In fact, the characters are sort of right about each other. Aydin isn't the lone bad guy, they all have many issues. Aydin is right about Nihal, and she about him, but only to an extent. It is a very subtle film. And regarding the show don't tell thing, it's not all tell. Dialogue and behavior also show. There is a lot that can be read into, but it is a version of showing that doesn't just have one interpretation; the viewer has to really engage and make up their own minds, rather than the film "telling" the viewer how to feel. In fact, it is advanced showing, even though the characters are talking a lot.

You should really watch “Uzak” it’s also a movie by the same director and the amount of depression in it is unreal! But for me that’s what cinema is all about and the only movies i watch. Anyways i thought you’d do a great video about it…
