I served on Iowa March 1987-August 1989. R-Division DC2 (was HT3 before rating split in 1988). I currently work at the shipyard that reactivated Iowa and Wisconsin in the 1980s. Due to the world stage as it is right now, I would support the reactivation/buy back of the Iowas and have upgrades made. Here's why. Yes, turret two is a memorial. That being said, the gun house could be removed and set as a permanent memorial. The turret barbette would make an absolutely fantastic VLS (Vertical Launch System) for missiles, possibly even hypersonics like the Zumwalts are getting. Imagine having a warship capable of destroying essentially an entire fleet and also have capabilities of mopping up the remainder of the at sea battlefield when everyone runs out of missiles. Also, what a wonderful way to honor our fallen shipmates! "You guys did not die in vain! Iowa still lives and fights!" Just my thoughts whether anyone agrees with me or not.

Today I was at the same location I was at on July 2nd or 3rd 1986 next to Ft Wadsworth S.I.N.Y. listening to Rock music being played over the speakers on the USS IOWA moored around 200YDS. off the coast looking up at the Verrazano Bridge. What a memorable day. It was the celebration of the Statue Of Liberty and where the IOWA was to be Home Ported just down the coast around a mile or so. around 3 days later saw her leave the harbor never to see her again. I've visited the New Jersey many times.

I Can't tell you....HOW Many Times, we would ( Operation Specialists [OS] use this in CIC [Combat Information Center] ) use this for nav, in in training or we need to have a SUPER Accurate ( because sometimes the radar 'skunk' is too blurry to see accurately on the radar screen ) "blip" (the point of the divider pencil) for tracking contacts for close approaches. There are Many other uses of this "Mo-Board", but You need to Join the Navy to find out!!😉

It would be really cool if you could restore the train and elevate systems permanently so that you could move one of the turrets regularly, as it would have done in operation, as part of the museum exhibit. There arent many museum warships that have any systems still operational; every one I have ever visited including the Iowa are static displays. Obviously there are good reasons for that, but still its a shame that there cant be a commemorative navy the way there is a commemorative air force. It would be great to make the ship feel alive by having some systems operational.

Well......... "It Would be Cool", But.......... 1) What if the system failed....say if the turret was transversed and it failed in returning to centerline = Navigation Hazard!! 2) Do we have enough Trained Men/Women that know how to run the equipment/trouble-shoot/maintain it = Not enough. 3) When, How Much, = When will we do it....Special Events ( which one(s) {how bout B-days????!!}, how much will it cost .... IS That feasible?? ==> no, no. Sure museums are static, with a few of them flying or driving and even Less sailing, but "what IF..." those planes crash, cars don't function/explode, ship sinks..... You JUST Lost the history for M A N Y others, for your pleasure. BUT " I " think....... the museums are "Alive" with the Men and Some Women, who know the stories. AND If you did visit IOWA....did you see LANE VICTORY.........?? She DID, before COVID, sail before, now look at her....not enough people, nobody knows how to repair boilers...let alone has the time, Not enough cares. Nope.

@@Hey_MikeZeroEcho22P Yep those are all very legitimate concerns. There is a reason why its not done, though it would be great if it could be. I visited the Iowa pre-Covid in 2016. I have visited a lot of museum ships, and I was amazed by how raw everything was on Iowa compared to other ships. It felt very different. I believe Iowa has only been a museum since 2011 if memory serves me right, and as of my visit many spaces were not open to tours yet. Some spaces you could look in through the hatch, but not enter. It gave the feeling that the ship was fresh out of mothballs. I admire all the hard work that the volunteers have done. If I lived close I would be volunteering myself. Yeap. Even though this Question/comment has been answered Several times.... The obstruction is enough (about 15 or18 feet, although I have never measured it), is enough to be a shipping hazard due to ships in a narrow channel. AND Every-once-in-awhile, you have ships passing by each other, Plus (+) if there is a container ship moored across the channel from us it narrows it even more, then how are the navigators/pilots (people guiding the ship into the harbor WHO Know all the obstructions) are they Qualified?? Then there is the winds/tides that COULD shift. So...how do you solve the problem?? Don't 'hang' the barrels Outside the Outline of the Ship!! Thus, Only Turret 3 is able to do that (not protruding outside the outline of the ship's rails) AND they line up the pulleys for 'striking down' the shells below!

I do have a photo, but Mike has instructed us not to share that pic. But I'm sure there are many of us that took pics of the damage. The navy and government should give money to the museum to keep them in basic working order. So, Great having BBs in games, but not in the real world anymore......that's like having a Calvary Charge in Ukraine..... But why couldn’t a strong temporary crane/boom have been welded over the hatches exactly where needed? It’d be a simple thing to remove & cover so it’d look like it’d never been touched. I know the logical simplest solutions are often not the Navy or Government way but if that is the reason I’d be all ears. Thanks!

THAT is a GREAT Question..... To, Probably, put it simply............. there were a L O T of nay-sayers, "...can't be done", "there's NO Way!", "impossible", etc...... In FACT, We (IOWA Volunteers and 'Higher UPS') weren't too sure either, but After Much (ahem) debate, we thought we give-it-a-go.... The OPS Vols are Dedicated men/women...some with the knowledge, some Former Veterans, like myself, ( Though I am a Former radar operator = Operations Specialist [OS] was my "rate/job" in the USN ) and we concluded that, "YEAH, Lets give it a try and see if the Girl Can Still work!!" So we tested the equipment, clean several switch-boards, made it look all dolled up, got some NEW cables, and Basically, told the other BBs to ....... "STAND-BY, ONE!" and made them eat their words!!! Now, why not use a crane.....why, Should we.... since we STILL had the rigs, motors, personnel, All on the Ship??!! And besides, Its Cheaper!! Didn't want to spend the $$,$$$ Extra that we were "Paying" some Expert Volunteers $$$$ that we HAVE on the ship. So, simply put, We Have All of The Equipment & Personnel & we wanted the nay-sayers to ......(AHEM)...... eat their words..... But, just FYI, I'll be switching to a NEW Channel for Any more IOWA "stuff"...but will post MayBe one (1) or two (2) more videos on IOWA before Permanently switching over. This Channel will STILL have the "older" videos of IOWA, here, but since THIS Channel is for my hobby....model building, I am rededicating that hobby here. The New Channel is 'Bludabeagle'....so You can see my models here, BUT 'Sub' for IOWA stuff on the 'Blu' Channel.

Great Question.... the shells are REAL...they have the weight, but N O Explosives..........(so are they dummy rounds?) I have seen them getting a fresh coat of paint to make them "green" ( HC Rounds = Explosives), but I believe that they are just the "blue" Practice Rounds = No Explosives, that GMs (Gunner's Mates) actually practice shooting out of the 16" guns. As far as the "powder bags"...those are fake with cement or sawdust (when I do Tours with Scouts, I "Pretend" that it is a 110 lbs (50kg) powder bag....and hand it over to one of the smaller Scouts) I had one (1) drop it, though..... 💥 ☠

HAH...... It's Been 'Played' .......... BY ME!!! I am, well...was.... a USN Operations Specialist back in the 80s. And, Once-upon-a-time, my Squadron of ships, went against a BB and a CGN in the Pacific, my ship was second in a column of Line, closing onto both "enemy ships". As we closed, the first FFG was taken out by EIGHT (8) anti-ship missiles, by the CGN, next was My ship. My FFG was taken out by Eight (8) anti-ship missiles from the BB, while the third ship, an FFG, was taken out by Six (6) ASMs coming off the cruiser (lucky Bast***). The fourth/final FFG , wasn't taken out by ASMs....instead it was hit by a 3-salvo shot from the BB.............. Needless-to-say.....I said a "classic line" as I was the one who was to fire OUR ASMs at those ships, well We didn't HAVE Quad-launchers, we had to fire one (1) shot at a time. So, I turned around after the third ship got taken out, by saying, "WHO Da H E L L, came out with THIS Scenario??!!!!" The Staff officer (who I didn't know was in CIC) said, "......I don't know, but We Should Kill Dat Guy."......... Little did I know...........

Yes, Turret #2 is NOT Functional. And Nothing was repaired to make it such. After the internal explosion, the turret was eventually brought back to centerline and then closed off, not welded. Then placed into mothballs in '91 until we received it in 2011 in Richmond, CA. But this is The LAST, I'll be mentioning T2, because That is not what the video is about ....and Will Not do a video on Turret #2.

Howdy, 'M_Miles'...... " I " Really don't think so. For Pretty Obvious reasons for Turret 2, but as for Turret 1.... probably Not either, although I don't believe that THAT turret didn't suffer any damage back in '89. BUT, IF you saw my 'Graphic Explanation' of Turret 1 it would have (B) SO (B) Little clearance, That if you transversed T1, there would Probably be about a four (~4) foot (~1.2m) clearance that people would have to crawl under the barrels...... Not a good idea for Anybody ( can you imagine people bumpin their heads ==🤕). AND Besides.... those barrels would protrude beyond the outline of the ship!! [NOTE: Even though T3 does protrude, the barrels are elevated At least 8 - 10 feet (2.4 - 3.1m)...I've seen people coming out of our Gift Shop and saw this one tall fellow, touching the bottom of the barrel with his hands]. IF you take a look at my "(Longer Version)" of Turret 3, you can see the barrels DO Protrude out....maybe about 4 - 5 feet (1.2 -1.3m), but I'm Sure the Coast Guard would have something to say and THEN it becomes "A Shipping Hazard, due to sunken ship or obstruction", I KNOW....that was one of my jobs in the USN to Label/Update ALL 'NOTICE TO MARINERS' on my charts { It was ALWAYS A Pain in da A** } to find All those buoys and relabel them and that is done Weekly, I believe. Great Question, Well.....as I explain in the video, part of the reason of placing 170 tons of shells inside Turret #1, is to provide Ballast for the IOWA. Look at it this way....... the engines weigh QUITE A Bit...... and when we moved IOWA out of Susian Bay in San Francisco ( in mothballs ), we needed to pump IN freshwater into some of the voids of the ship, JUST to raise the ship up out of the mud. So today, we STILL have that water from ten+ (10+) years ago "balancing the ship" so we don't drag our A** in the mud in San Pedro. THUS, if we load Turret #3 with All of those shells............. well, we be putting the back end of IOWA into the mud. NOT the Thing To DO!! Don't want to damage the ship, like a few other (way Older) battleships. Does that help?? At FIRST, I believe, I mentioned of placing shells in Turret 3, but THAT IS Incorrect, and didn't notice the error until I posted.
