Why & Where Should You Use Threadlock On your Bike? | GCN Tech Monday Maintenance

Спорт

Threadlock, or retaining compound, can be found on most bolts on your bicycle. It adds a bit more security to important bolts on your brakes, handlebars, and elsewhere, to ensure they remain tight enough to keep you riding safely. In this video, Alex talks you through threadlock, where you need to use it, and how it actually works.

    Firstly, red threadlock has no place on bicycle components unless you never want to ever disassemble it, even with heat. Yes, threadlock has replaced anti-seize. Even though anti-seize walks less than grease, but sometimes you just don't want that near rotors or bearing surfaces.

    ... and the "purple threadlocker" itself is blue 🤯. I was surprised (and somewhat worried) the first time I removed the disc calipers of my LBS-assembled bike and saw red threadlocker, until I applied my own local-brand medium-strength threadlocker and saw it was red. Loctite threadlocker bottles also have that "feature" (being mostly red with a stripe marking the type of threadlocker)

    You only need purple for bikes. The point of having a thread locking system is to keep the preload in stud/bolt (that can be lowered by bolt loosening) and NOT to counter any additional torque put onto it: i.e. if a bolt rating torque is 5Nm, you don't want to have to use an extra 5Nm to unlock it. Bolts loosen because of changing conditions (eg pushing on the handlebars from side to side) and vibrations. A good design takes into account the bolt preload (example of 5Nm) and does not take into account the thread lock. the added lock is just for safety!

    #askgcn - co2 cartridges Hi GCN I am looking to upgrade my road, emergency tire kit. Currently I have a minipump which isn't exactly massive (16cm) but I don't want to attach it to the frame. Handlebar bag is an option, but I want a smaller setup for climbing days. The pump won't fit in a saddle bag so I started looking at co2. It's promising but I don't like the single use disposable nature of them. So my question is, what are the alternatives? Refill cartridges? Or are they not as bad for the environment as I think? What do you guys usually carry in a saddle bag?

    I just lost a dust cap from 1991 8spd Campy Record derailleur pulley -the whole pulley wheel fell off. I found the scattered parts except for one dust cap, which is unique and impossible to find online, so I replaced the wheel with an 11-tooth generic (works fine), but this could have been avoided by a) checking my bike better, b) threadlock!! I'm going to use it on some parts that don't normally have it, just for peace of mind.

    I've got an old road bike that has a history of the fixed cup on the bottom bracket coming loose, even after tightening it down with a lot of force. The style bottom bracket is a typical 3 piece, tapered & cotterless used on many bikes from the '80's. Would the threadlock do the trick to keep the fixed cup from coming loose? I'm worried that during it's initial use, some of the excess threadlock might seep into the cup & bearings - a real disaster!!

    My worry with grease on low torque areas is that you can achieve more compression with the same torque - so you could end up crushing something whilst your torque wrench says you haven't overtightened. At least that's what it feels like when I use grease for those things.

    @MRGRUMPY53 I put some centrelock disc rotors on the other day - with a tiny bit of grease. As I was using a tool that takes a spanner I couldn't put a torque wrench on it. No idea if they're on too tight or too loose. Or Goldilocks. What does 40nm feel like in terms of grunts or effort?

  • @playandteach

    @playandteach

    @MRGRUMPY53 No. Those bolts are about 6nm. So I'm looking for 6 - 7 times that force. Just did it up shy of what stripping the threads might feel like.

    On rough surfaces which cause vibration any clamp / bolt etc. can come loose. Thread lock works by filling the spaces between the threads, not allowing vibration to cause movement between the two items fastened together and thus allowing them to untighten.

    One important place for thread lock is not on the bicycle. Use it on the screws that hold the cleats on your shoes. Those screws are notorious for getting loose or coming off while you are riding. If thread lock isn't immediately available, fingernail polish works quite well...the color of the polish won't matter.

  • @twiggyinc1

    @twiggyinc1

    2 жыл бұрын

    Plumbers tape is intended to keep a water seal for plumbing joints which rely on the thread for a seal (rather than compression joints) it's main job isn't keeping something secure. Bike bolts would be subject to alot more rattling, shakes etc. to work loose over time. However plumbers tape would fill up the gaps inbetween the thread and might slow down the unwinding process.

    The motivation for using thread lock is diametrically opposite to that for using grease. With threadlock, the goal is to keep the two parts attached to one another. With grease, the goal is to allow the parts to be separated next time something needs service. As a person who removes the pedals, bottle cages, bars and rear derailleur when packing the bike for air travel (not doing much of that these days though), I like components to disassemble easily. If you have ever sheered off a bolt head due to bi-metalic corrosion (Aluminum/steel), you would diligently grease your parts for future disassembly.

    *Thread lock* Is something I've started using on rear axle repairs, and lose lock rings. Including the front wheel axel as well. This prevents them from coming lose like they do love doing. DO this for a friend, and suddenly it never happens again. I just used a weaker one so it could still be taken off (with a hammer drill :) ) In fact when I update any parts I use thread lock.

    @gcntech we need super-precise kilowatthour meters and this is why.. for ebike racing. for ebike racing the racers would need all equal battires and not just that, but tiny little boxes that allow only a set amount to go through before shut off. that way the racers have 'exactly' equal amounts of electron potential. if one racer wants to use rear hub, mid drive, front, 750watt, 250 watt.. the race will decide which is more advantagous with the combined effort of an adept athlete. this is gonna eventually happen and this is what is needed to make it happen.
