Why Were Tiger Tanks So Feared?

In this video, we look at the infamous Tiger Tanks of the Second World War. We look at why they were hugely feared by the allied soldiers during World War 2. The Tiger I tank is one of history's most iconic tanks, as is the King Tiger. In another video we will look at the King Tiger and see if it was a good tank or not.
The Tiger tank burst onto the scene against Russian and Allied soldiers. It would have a role in destroying many different tanks like T-34's and Sherman tanks. Infact the Tiger would be much superior to these.

The Tiger produced the most tank Aces as well as kill to death ratio to date. Whoever doubts it's armor can also just look up the report on 231. 252 hits from all sorts of Soviet caliber AT weapory, armor was swiss cheese, suspension was damaged and it was all but entirely crippled yet still somehow managed to limp back 60 km to friendly lines under it's own engine power, a feat which no other tank has been able to achieve to this date. It was feared and is also the most iconic tank for a reason.

Those tank aces would have started the war in panzer 2 and 3s. You talk about the unkillable tiger, yet you failed to mention that 230 of the over the 250 odd hits were made by anti tank rifles. If the tiger was soo good.. Why bring out the tiger 2 so quickly? Albert Speer saw the writting on the wall and quite rightly concentrated on stug 3 production. After all the third reich was on the defensive from 43 onwards.

@@fullmonty5722 And how many tanks did you think Otto Carius managed to destroy as a loader on a Panzer 38(t) or Michael Wittmann in his StuG III Ausf E with the short barreled 75mm howitzer exactly? And from a technical standpoint, Tiger 231 was made into swiss cheese with several 45mm and 76mm rounds heavily damaging the right hand suspension plus the engine also catching on fire and it still somehow managed to limp back 60 km under it's own engine power to friendly lines. Had it been any other tank it either would have been completely destroyed or required heavy towing equipment and an evacuation operation that would require hours and not to mention many lives lost because it would be done under fire. I also recently read a rather badly translated Soviet report on captured Tigers so much so that they admit that the heavy losses the Tiger dealt the red army during kursk, hence why they used it as a propaganda piece saying they defeated it there, is the reason for the up-gunning program for the T34 due to the 76mm gun being ineffective at piercing even the side armor of the tank at 200 meters even with sub-caliber ammunition and also the development of the IS2 with its 122mm gun. So you saying the Germans seeing the writing on the wall is a very ignorant and biased argument and the simple truth is that there was an Arms race on the Eastern Front, much less so than on the Western one for one reason or another. But Germany did prove to have the edge in the quality of their AFVs. As you mentioned the StuG when armed with the longer barreled 75mm gun proved to be an effective tank destroyer when properly positioned, of course combined with good optics and training as well.

@@TigerBaron I said Albert Speer saw the writting on the wall. He was the armaments minister. 10000+ stug 3 produced from 43 onwards 1000 tiger 1s in the same period 200 ish tiger 2s. For the cost of 1 tiger you could build 4 stugs, and in quicker time. The unkillable tiger was more of a propaganda tool than anything else. Yes i did crawl away under its own power. Did it ever see active service again? Of course not. Yes it was hit a few times by 45mm anti tank guns anti tank guns and 76mm t34 rounds. But they only accounted for 30 out of 250 hits. I dont think a is2 fired at it. A 120 mm round into the front glacise from a 1000 yards grom an is2 would have prompted a sudden unplanned disassembly. Another point often unmentioned that needs mentioning imho. Manganese. Post 43, Germany had huge problems acquiring it. Steel had to be produced without it. Tiger 1 could probably take the hits but the lack of manganese would have resulted in increased splintering inside the tank. No good having an unpenetrated tank if your crew are still dying/getting wounded.

@@fullmonty5722 And as I said, the war in the East was an arms race to the fullest extent, much more so than any other theater at that time probably. Plus comparing just numbers of produced vehicles is as simple as you can get without actually taking into account the fact that you're comparing a 60 ton Heavy (Breakthrough) Tank with a 20 ton turret armed with an 88 crewed by veterans and a 20 odd ton Assault Gun turned Tank Destroyer armed with 75mm gun, equipped with artillery optics and having decently trained crews. Not to mention the materials that went into said tanks, they used the finest steel available for the Tiger's armor and as you yourself said they started lacking in the steel's quality after 1943 onwards hence why the Panther and King Tiger's armor was more brittle. On top of that I would just like to mention that Tigers due to their armor protection had the least losses of all tanks due to enemy fire and most were from mechanical issues so that's why many Tiger crewmen actually survived the war. And I'm not arguing that it wasn't made for propaganda altho I never said that it was unkillable, that's something that you started saying first, not me. However here is Lt. Zabel's full report: "The combat group Sander had to face a very strong enemy when attacking the collective farm west of Ssemernikovo. The Tiger attacking as advance platoon left the lighter tanks behind, and attracted all the enemy fire. The tanks received hits on the front and to the right-hand side. The enemy, with tanks, AT guns and AT rifles opened fire at a great distance. My Tiger received a 7.62cm hit in the front of the driver’s position. The spare track links fixed there with an iron rod were ripped off. In the tank we noticed a bang and a slight shaking. The nearer we came, the stronger the bangs and shaking from the 7.62cm hits became. At the same time we noticed considerably high dust clouds from artillery ground impacts near the tank. Further on, the crew noticed a somewhat lighter bang followed by a burst of yellow smoke, most likely a hit from an AT rifle. A short time later we received a hit from a 4.5cm AT gun on the cupola. The brackets of the bullet-proof glass were smashed. The glass vision block jammed and became opaque caused by heat from the explosion. A further hit destroyed the brackets and the hatch fell into the turret interior. There was dense smoke in the fighting compartment and the area became very hot. The loader’s hatch was jammed and stood slightly open and it received a number of hits from AT rifles demolishing the hinges and brackets. After the battle two 4.5cm AT guns and 15 AT rifle hits were counted on the cupola. On both days of the attack the enemy destroyed our machine guns. The smoke dischargers on the turret were also destroyed. The smoke in the turret caused so much trouble that the Tiger was not ready for action for some time... ...all crew members nerves were frayed, we lost our sense of time. We felt neither hunger nor any other needs. Despite the fact that the attack lasted for more than six hours, all men in the tank felt the time had gone by in a flash. After a further 7.62cm hit on the mantlet the gun mounting bolts sheared off. The recoil brake lost its fluid and the gun barrel remained in rear (recoiled) position. Due to electric problems the breech block could not be shut. Due to shocks inflicted by further hits the radio system failed and the steering levers were jammed. When the exhaust cover was destroyed, the engine caught fire. This fire could be extinguished by the fire-fighting system. Further hits loosened some turret ring screws. The turret traversing system failed temporarily... We counted 227 hits by AT rifles, 14 hits by 5.7cm AT guns and 11 hits by 7.62cm AT guns. The right suspension was heavily damaged by shelling. The connecting pieces for several running wheels were ruined, two torsion bars were broken. A rear idler wheel bearing was damaged. In spite of this damage the Tiger was able to be driven for further 60km. The hits inflicted cracks to some weld seams. A fuel tank began leaking due to the heavy shocks. We noticed a number of impacts in the track links, which however did not particularly impair mobility. Subsequently, it can be said that the armour on the Tiger had come up to our expectations..." He apparently writes that the armor of the tank stood up to their expectations and kept the crew alive, that's what it's supposed to do. And while most of the hits were indeed from the PTRS AT rifle which is of the 13,5mm caliber, can you name another tank that survived being hit 30 odd times by 45mm and 76mm rounds and was capable of limping back to friendly lines under it's own engine power and protected it's crew with no casualties? I highly doubt it. I also again never said an IS2 fired at it as this story was before or during Operation Citadel and Kursk in 1943, the IS2 is a 1944 tank. However the Soviets did conduct tests with the IS2's gun but due to poor optics it missed, I read it in the recent Soviet reported that I mentioned previously here: warspot.net/38-heavy-trophy And I quote: "Trials took place from April 25th to April 30th, 1943. 13 cannons, 5 anti-tank rifles, the KB-30 anti-tank grenade, 2 types of anti-tank mines, and the 37 mm aircraft gun from a LAGG-3 were used. Of those, three weapons (the 107 mm M-60, 122 mm M-30, and 152 mm ML-20) managed not to hit the target, even though the weather was clear." And here is the part of the T34/76's gun: "The trials of the F-34 gun turned into a real fiasco. Not a single shot penetrated, not even from 200 meters. This was true for the AP, experimental subcaliber, and experimental HEAT shell. This was the main Soviet tank gun of this period!". I very much doubt that the Russians would be biased against their own weapons and tanks I assume that the Tiger, especially at Kursk, really did deliver them a shocking blow to morale due to their heavy losses.

My great uncle was apart of what was basically a free floating unit where they went wherever they were needed rather than being attached to a specific infantry unit and he recalled to my grandfather about the process of taking out a tiger, he fought all the way through Italy and France and on the border of Germany he cracked and was sent home overall he saw a lot of things and although he never said directly he did describe how terrifying it was to encounter a tiger or rather the threat of encountering one.

Just found your channel. I like what I'm seeing :). Question: How vulnerable were tracks? Could you stop a heavy tank with a relatively light gun (say 37mm), and what would be the smallest gun that's still effective against tracks?

  • @TheUntoldPast

    @TheUntoldPast

    4 жыл бұрын

Thank you :) In terms of a tanks tracks, it's the weakest part of the Tank. Much like tyres on a car really, they're the part of the tank which is most susceptible to break down or fail. I'm not too sure in terms of smallest guns to shoot off tracks on a tank, however the more successful ways of knocking tracks off was using anti-tank mines and bazookas. The British did use an anti-tank rifle known as the Boys anti-tank rifle, but i'd need to look into how effective this was. Tank tracks could even break if the tank was turned too quickly or so on. Thanks for the comment :)

Germans mostly gave the Tiger to experienced crews and almost always good commanders. They made sure to give extra attention to supplying Tiger units because they were generally considered to be the elite tankers of the Wehrmacht. They even had their own dedicated recovery units for the inevitable breakdowns. Ironically, the tank was great in attacks behind enemy lines but also in the ambush role, not so much with a lot of running around. They didn't look for opportunities with the Tiger, they exploited opportunities which were already known, making it generally very effective when used correctly

The Tiger 1 panzer 6 heavy Tank was a legendary tank that has a reputation for being feared by the allies, combining lethal firepower and excellent armour. The need to replace the panzer IV goes back to 1938, when several prototypes where built. In 1941, an order was placed this Henschel for the VK 36.01 with a specification of good armour protection and a powerful gun and a maximum speed at 40km/h or 25 mph. The tank had to be larger and an order was placed in May 1941 for a 45-ton tank called, the VK 4501. It was armed with an 8.8 cm gun! The deadline for the prototype would be on Hitler's next birthday (April 20th 1942, forcing several elements of the design to be rushed. Once completed it would be named the VK 4501 (H). The H standing for henschel. In competition, porsche had created its own design: the VK 4501 (p), to the same requirements. This both designs meeting the deadline of Hitler's birthday, the henschel design was selected for production. Designated as the Panzerkampfwagen Tiger Ausf. E, but eventually the final design would use a mixture of the parts from previous prototypes by Henschel and Porsche. The krupp turret and gun would stay the same. The crew of the tiger tank numbered 5, including the comander, gunner, loader (who sat in the turret), and the driver and radio operator in the hull. The armour was very thick, from 25 to 120mm offering excellent protection! For travelling on cross-country or preparing for combat, wider tracks where fitted, improving the traction. On 1943, the 55-ton tank was powered by a V12 Maybach HL230 gasoline engine providing 690 horsepower, or 515 kilowatts. This was quite underpowered and the tank had a top speed of 38km/h or 24 mph! One over engineering problem with the tank was the overlapping wheel suspension, which became clogged with mud and on the eastern front, this was especially dangerous, as the mud froze completely, immobilizing the tank. The armament of the Tiger 1 was its deadly 88mm kwk gun, capable of penetrating American m4 sherman armor and two MG34 or MG42 machine guns: one coaxial in the mantlet and the other in a ball turret within the hull. Smoke discharge canisters were also positioned on both sides of the turret. The Tiger 1 first appeared in Tunisia (North Africa) in late 1942, there appearance shocking the British forces! They were used on all fronts including Italy, Normandy and the eastern front! It was only until mid-1944 that the allies could produce tanks that could effectively engage the Tiger 1 tank, such as the British Sherman Firefly and the Russian T-34/85. Only 1,350 Tiger 1's where built with production between August 1942 and August 1944. Other rare variants include the Befehlspanzer Tiger, which was a command tank and the Sturm tiger, which featured a large self-propelled mortar.

It is possible to make armament thicker and thicker. If the quality of the steel is inferior it would be just a waste of time. The Germans are known for high quality steel and specialty steel. We in the U.S. have (or had) a huge steel industry, but we are still forced to buy specialty steel from Germany. It cannot be had anywhere else in the world.

Tiger (P) had an electric motor/transmission, which was way more expensive to make/maintain. roughly 10 Tiger (P)s were built and only 1 saw combat - estimated to have destroyed 50 or so enemy tanks. It was used against the Soviets and was command vehicle for a battalion of Elephant Tank Destroyers. Other 9 used for training purposes. The allies would move in against a single Tiger 1 with 4-5 Shermans, try to out flank it and hope for a shot in the back or another critical spot. It was literally considered a worthy trade off losing 4 Shermans if the last one could manage to get a shot off in the back of the Tiger and destroying it. That's how feared the Tiger was.

As someone who thinks the Tiger is good in combat (Bad at logistics however), that’s often a myth considering Shermans always were packed in 5. The joke is that Shermans took 5 tanks to beat a Tiger, 5 tanks to defeat an anti air craft gun, and 5 tanks to defeat a truck. And that’s because they always travelled in groups of 5.

The tiger was nowhere near indestructible the frontal plate could easily be punched through through the front by the fire flies 76 mm gun with ease. It could easily be destroyed by a is 2 what’s the 122 mm gun even the M 26 Pershing could punch the armor with ease with its 90 mm gun. it hurt its reputation by seal clubbing early T 34s and Sherman’s. The design was overall quite good good layout for the crew fantastic 88 mm gun, the overlapping wheel design distributing 16 points of pressure which should make it easier to cross mud which gave it the same ground pressure per square inch as the T 34. overlapping wheel design could easily get clogged with Mud though. So the tiger tank was not the best tank in the second world war.

Tiger tank wasnt feared it was German propoaganda to make it appear so. Allied crews were on the lookout for any tank, Tiger or otherwise. If we were to make such a claim then the German crews were afraid of the Jumbo, since they went out of their ways to try to kill them. Tiger tank did have firepower and armor, but it did not have a reliable engine, transmission, suspension and overall any spare parts or streamline production. Tiger never began to appear in large numbers. It had a terrible production rate, expensive and over-engineered parts. Tiger I production ran from July 1942 to August 1944, with 1347 built. T-34's 85 mm gun would penetrate the front of a Tiger between 200 and 500 m and a Sherman's upgraded 76 mm gun will penetrate the Tiger's driver's front plate from 600 m, the nose from 400 m and the turret front from 700 m.

The tiger tank was crap. It was just less crap than the allied tanks fielded against it. It was too heavy, too unreliable, too expensive, too labour intensive to maintain, too rare (less than 1,400 made) etc. I could go on and on. To cap it all off, it was the wrong tank for the wrong time. It was a breakthrough tank introduced in to the war at a time when germany was on the retreat almost anywhere, forcing it to be a defensive weapon system. Most of them were destroyed or abandoned without making anywhere near the impact its reputation suggested. Most allied tankers never even saw one. Its reputation meant that it was frequently misidentified. It served for a few years against inferior tanks, and then, because there was nothing worthy in its design to continue after the war, it was discarded. You fanboys need to wake up and stop your obsession over this failure of a vehicle. Had the Centurion been introduced a couple of years earlier, it would have stood on more than equal footing with the Tiger. It is the Centurion, and not the Tiger, which is one of the best tank designs of all time, serving for over half a CENTURY thanks to its ability to be continuously upgraded. Where is the Tiger? Why was its design not copied? Because it was obsolete. The heavy tank concept was a dead duck even while the Tiger was serving.
