They were also phosphorescent, and they would glow at night, if exposed to enough sunlight. That's another reason why German soldiers didn't like to wear them. At least these didn't contain radium-226, which would've been hazardous to wear for extended periods of time. It would be like receiving a chest X-ray (after _x_ amount of time and what the activity could've been, _if_ they were radioluminescent in the first place). The USA, Canada, and Great Britain used to use radioluminescent "personnel markers" for identification at night. They're basically large buttons (with a diameter of about 1.5 inches for "personnel markers" and "deck markers" and about 2 inches in diameter for "bridge markers"), which glow on one side, and are sealed inside of a brass or steel disk, with a Plexiglas window (on the self-luminous side). Some were attached to personnel, posts, trees, boats, supplies, supply drops by parachute, and bridges-at night, for makeshift roads and paths, and for personnel and supplies to be identified at night. I actually have a couple of radium-226 "deck markers" and a radium-226 "bridge marker". They don't glow as bright as they used to, but they are quite radioactive, and will be for tens of thousands of years. Radium-226 has a half-life of 1600 years. They contain a mixture of radium-226 and copper-activated zinc sulfide, a scintillator, which would make it self-luminous. They say "POISON INSIDE" on the back. They came in lead boxes, which would say to keep away from for extended periods of time, and to not store photographic film in (or near) them either. Anyways, sorry this was so long of a reply! This is just some information I wanted to share, whether you were interested in it or not. ☢️

You say SS you're using a blanket term for modern historians the SS is just a way of saying all the bad guys from Nazi Germany but the reality is the SS by 44 has more than 900,000 soldiers in just waffen SS. They also have administrative SS units court SS units and economic SS units running everything from mineral water bottling facilities to concentration camps. And while some SS were brutal and some SS committed mass atrocities other SS were far behind the front lines doing administrative tasks and often some waffen SS Frontline military units were essentially acting as fire brigades on the eastern front constantly being plugged into the most vicious and under threat sectors most often SS tank divisions fought against odds on the eastern front that start out at 3:1 by 43 they're fighting at 5:00 to 1 odds by 44 late early 45 tank and artillery odds have escalated to 10:00 to 1 and sometimes even 12:00 to 1 odds meaning no helm no matter how many tanks the Germans killed that there would be a guarantee there would be more than next day if the Germans killed 100 Soviet tanks they'll be 200 the next day if you kill 300 Soviet tanks they'll be 500 the next day The Germans are losing an nutritional war by taking on all the powerful armies of the world and their economies simultaneously which is why you don't put one guy in charge up an entire country with no checks and balances

I was always more of a 17th and 18th century history buff most of my life and I can remember watching “Stalingrad” for the first time and noticing these gorgets on some of the soldiers. Had to ask a good friend of mine who does German ww2 reenactment what these fellas were. Really interesting that their MPs chose to wear these, since the gorget was so common in the early modern period. They started out a lot bigger and bulkier in the late medieval era, but by the 1700s they became an easy way to spot certain officers. Even militia units wore them.

Regular soldiers called them "Kettenhund" or chained dogs. They took them off mainly because other than being a nice shiny target, regular soldiers hated them because they were corrupt and sent a lot of them to penal units for little to no reason and would accuse them of desertion and shoot them on the spot with no investigation or trial, and so would sneak attack them whenever the chance arose. Thus you can imagine that the Kettenhunde had a reason to be wary not to get under friendly fire, why some of them might have put their plaque off when they felt it would be safer for their health. P.S. I forgot to mention that those Kettenhunde usually weren't operating at the front line under adverse fire, but they not seldomly were hunting deserters.
