Why We Stopped Working on the Dirt Floor
The excavation of the cottage floor is well underway, but there's a problem.
The next challenge is sourcing the stones for the step, if it ever stops raining. #renovation #interiordesign #cottage

Here on my channel, I am renovating a 250 year old stone cottage on my property in Normandy, France. By using traditional, low-waste and off-grid methods, I'm aiming to keep the charm and character of this old building, and turn it into a furnished, finished home for family whilst keeping environmental impact as low as possible. There will also be content on living in France, visiting beautiful rural places, hunting for antiques, gardening and more! Hit subscribe if you would like to keep up with my journey, and hit the notification bell to be alerted when we go LIVE where we have a first viewing of the video as it is published with a live chat so I can answer all your questions! I admire how Sean works around the weather and equipment failures. It is a lesson for us all in perseverance..❤
Sean your ability to remain upbeat while working around the weather is amazing!!
I like the way you address not having a reliance on electric tools, something I’ve noticed with modern trades. When the power goes out, they go home. Always have a backup plan. Great job on showing basics as well. Often something that I forget is not everyone has the same understanding of tools. You must be a natural teacher. Not as easy as it seams. I really liked this one!

I was thinking the same thing !! I have learned so much from you Sean !! Never in 1 million years did I know there was a 90 degree angle that could be used on a handsaw !! I’m 65. I’ve been piddling around my house for 20 years; and had I known this previously-something’s would’ve been a bit more straight !!
Cute, you can never have too many shelves. A new game hide n stone. You have been holding back from us, a secret rock garden.
I wish I had known you when I was younger because your words, " let the saw do its job," would have made my life easier when I was sawing by hand with all my projects. When I sawed wood, I would put all my weight on the saw, figuring the saw would cut faster, but it didn't. I was 18 years old when I married, and my father had passed, so there was no one to give me tips. My husband was green as grass, so I had to learn whatever I could . Also, your idea of framing the roof window horizontally was splendid. Then, framing the top board a little higher to let more light in was the frosting on the cake. Every time you work upstairs, the area looks closer to finishing. It is so inviting already. Another great video. Hello from Yakima, Washington, USA.

Hi Katherine sometimes learning the hard way is the best way, but it's also wise to learn from others too 😊
Always admire your “can do”, “make do” attitude! I learn so much from your narration too! Love your plan for the stairs, too .Your creative thinking Sean is the hallmark of your success! Thanks for all you show us!

You're welcome 😊
Sounds like the new stairs will make a small Foyer at the entrance, which could have a nice coat rack/shoe caddy on the facing wall from the door. My Grandpa was a Master Carpenter and always told me to "..let the saw do the work.". You brought back good memories😂

Nice memories 👌
Like your audience, cows are so clean. I remembered my Dad telling me to use my thumb to guide the hand saw. That and he always wore a pencil above his ear. He built our garage, a dormer for us kids bedrooms and finished the basement and he had a full time job in law enforcement.

Hello Sean, you are "turning the sow's ear into a silk purse!". That cottage will be lovely.
The cottage is certainly coming along quickly now regardless of what the weather is doing.

I have learned throughout my 67 yrs. that you buy when you see stuff or regret ensues. LOL Another day of thinking it through and getting it done good stuff Sean. :) :)
Sean, my husband and I love both of your channels! They’re always fun and interesting to watch and we enjoy them so much. Thank you for sharing your life with us 💜
Sean, l love how you improvise, when you run out of wood or other objects, to find ways too use what nature can give you. Very smart ❤😊😊
The brackets are something I would have been interested in…that last big tour of yard sale events had sooo much eye candy of dated accessories …thanks for the tour by the way
One of those days when you do a little of everything wet and cold here ❤
Sean, you are an amazing person! You don’t let rain or electrical outages stop you! You just work old school! Come in out of the rain & bring out the hand tools! ❤❤loved your attitude, too!❤❤
So glad you didnt take the stone from the outside of the cottage but found another source. What is Amazing is how you overcome the setbacks thrown at you, this is where your knowledge of construction/carpentry comes into play to keep you moving forward (at a slower pace, yes but moving forward). Sean do not worry about your garden being overgrown in certain areas it's still is and will be beautiful, I love the fact you always think about the frogs 💕 something many find repulsive and wouldn't worry about, so thank you - Great video with good knowledge and content 👍

Sadly Freddy hopped off somewhere else over the winter, probably in search of a girlfriend. This year the pond is full of newts, just as welcome but somewhat quieter 😊
Sean, I love how you explain how to do things. As a woman who took academic studies, you're a blessing. Keep up the good work. Cheers 🍻 from Pennsylvania.

Your frugal. ❤ All the tips you give. And working with what you have.
Hey Sean thank you for using tools that normal everyday newbies use, I find it really frustrating when machines are used that need some experience. Keep up the great work, your explanations are simple and easy to understand.
Love seeing all the progress you are finally making on all your lists of jobs you have going. Can't wait to see the plasterboard up in the cottage attic and front path/patio area finished off. You mist show us how your Willow tree canopy is doing/growing. Also love the fluer de lis shelves. I am a rustic collector myself so appreciate the enthusiastic unveiling of them. Will wait with baited breath to see where you install them. Keep up the good work Sean.
A lot to do. All that cheerful daylight flooding into the upper floor and then reflecting on the silver thermal sheets makes it cheerful. Hard to get projects done quickly with so much upkeep. You are very lucky to have so many free stones lying around that you can use. Loved your thumbprint.
Sean! Is there ever a day without rain? No wonder everything looks as green as Ireland!

Another exciting video. I love all the stonework preparation you share with us, Hercules. You have a generous choice of slabs to consider. How lucky you are that in addition to your picturesque estate, you also have a private quarry of huge stones to suit your very specific needs. Boy, you hit the lottery when you found this particular site for your future home, 10 years ago, or whatever it was. A stone haven waiting to be lovingly restored by just the man with your many talents! Your homesite is gleeming with joy as it is brought back to life. And France gets another historical location, preserved to brag about to the world. You must read Ken Follett's book, Pillars of the Earth, about a stonemason in the era of cathedral building in France. Looking forward to more construction and more explaining as you go...Thanks, again!
Bouncing from project to product feels really productive.
You've certainly had more than a fair share of rain this year haven't you? Every few years we get one spring/summer when we get a very wet season. Everything is very green and lush...at least until August. By then everything dries out and we're back to brown, dry and drought-like. Ah well, if we didn't have the weather to complain about, what would we do for fun? Lol!
The thumbnail looks a Norman Rockwell painting. Love it.

Amazing how fast those weeds come up. That's from all that rain you got.
Sean, Suggest your next purchase would be an impact driver for your screws aka fasteners, and cordless skill saw. Save you a lot of time .
I love the large stone steps you built previously. It would look so pretty I’d you did something similar going down to the dell you just showed us. Lower maintenance for you by having tarp, gravel and stones along the pathway. I love watching your channel. The upstairs of the cottage is so bright now with the windows and the framing you are doing looks amazing. Love your purchases. xx

LOVE the little brackets!!
You had quite a few challenges in this video. Thanks for showing us an upbeat attitude. I realize that your true feelings may not be quite so positive. You're definitely a good problem solver.
I love how you just go with the flow with the weather you are having. Your cottage has come so far and am really enjoying seeing it coming back to life Sean. Always an adventure and treasures to find. Thank you for the great videos!
I love the old shelf brackets and you are correct that the little details add much character to the room😊
Well, that was fun! For some reason I love watching you strim the garden. Here in Canada we call them weed whackers or whipper snippers. A great episode, thanks Sean. 🙏❤️
Another miserable wet day for you. Thanks for explaining the framing out etc., so interesting and great use of timber on hand. Rethinking other ways of using what you have. Love those stones
You have had alot of rain last winter and this spring! It's coming along!
You're a really good teacher. Looking good all around your property.
Wow, it's a jungle, Sean, but a beautiful jungle....very magical, indeed!! 🇺🇸
The sheep brackets will be fabulous! The little details are most important! 😊❤
I love the fleur de Lis brackets! In the kitchen would be cool, but anywhere in the cottage would be nice!
Cold and raining here in Western Australia.
I fully understand why you get so excited ! The vision is in your mind And when you find some thing that fits that vision You have to buy it !!! (been known to do this myself!) Keep going Sean !! you’re doing great !!!
My favorite part of this vlog was the handraulic saw lesson.... thanks so much, I'm always sawing off tree branches and I think this lesson will make this job easier.

Sean, good bit of work on the window. Always so interesting your explanations on why and what you're doing. I really like the Fleur de Lis brackets. Wonderful find. Cheers
Predrilling really helps and works like a charm … I love using the counter sinking drill bit.
Sean, I learn something new every time I watch you. I hope the rain lets up so you can continue your outdoor work.
A bit of this & that still makes a Intresting video 👍🤗 ☕🍰☕🍰 The rain has stopped play on my plans for outside 😪 Love Sue ❤❤❤🇬🇧❤❤❤

Sean, nothing seems to faze you. There always seems to be a plan B! I hope your saw was an easy fix. and the lesson in saw technique was well done! I remember my Grampy saying that about letting the saw do the work! Love your enthusiasm for the authentic bits and pieces that will add to the look you want to create. Have a good weekend.
Sean how do you stay so happy when the weather changing so much hourly. Love how things are going. Bless 👍🙏🏻
Love those shelf brackets! You are so right about the details finishing off the restoration!!
Sean your are such a busy person and always happy, i like that, till next time.
Nice Michigan hat!! Greetings from Grand Rapids, Michigan. 👋🙂
Love the variety of this video. You definitely have plenty of stones to use in that boggy area. I hope you can get the power saw working again.
You can find a use for almost anything Seán, while working round the changing weather.
I always learn a lot from your videos.
Good idea shelf brackets. 😊Seen fleur de lis finials on top an iron railing & gate. Bolted on. Exactly the same.
Your stamina is remarkable and I do appreciate your yard and building expertise God bless you!
Wow, those Fleur de Lis brackets are exquisite!
Love your "ajustment tool!"
Here in the mountains it’s 65 degrees Fahrenheit, and sunny. Nice breeze to keep the bugs away too!
You (and Sam) are so delightful. Really enjoy your vlogs.
💕Just a thought💕Could you not of turned the staircase around giving you head height above by moving it backwards so the kitchen was under the stairs💕

Your attic space is really coming along!
Fabulous episode! Great progress! Thank you all! 💜 👍😎🥰💖
Lovely video yet again Sean, love how you call your hammer "The Persuader" ! What a great find with the Fleur de Lys brackets, so authentic and in keeping with the age of the cottage.Antique items are much nicer than brand new, imagine new brass or iron brackets, they would stick out like a sore thumb and I bet each one was hand made not pressed on a tool and mass produced.I do admire your building trade knowledge where you skilfully adapt to situations and try to work around the weather & manage to pass tips on to your viewers.Keep going Sean , really appreciate your channel and all that you do, Oh by the way, my son's pub at the bottom of his garden is coming on a treat, must send you a photo when finished.

Hot and humid here ❤
Up North (UK) we line up bi t'rack o' t'ee" ("..by the rack of the eye") 😁
Really nice to see it coming along Sean.
Send some rain to Cheney Lake in Kansas. Water rationing may be starting real soon. Lake is down to 71% full. At 69% fill phase 2 water rationing starts and no boats on the lake. The water from the lake services water to Wichita and many small town in the area. Rain/storms have come through but for some reason they miss the lake! Love to see the progress you are making! See you next time.
Michigan Woo Woo!
Adaptability is most important! 😊❤
It’s a natural sense of pleasure…it would be for me that is…..to find a stone out in your yard that’s just the right size for first step..!!
Thanks for the hand saw tips.
Sean as always your video is very informative and good😊
Love that Michigan hat you have there And keep up the good work
Love these videos! Happy worker.
I’m surprised nobody falls over all the random stones lol
Thank you for sharing 😊
Hi Sean, You are doing a wonderful job, Yes if you can find smooth flat stones for the step that would be wonderful- it would make the stairs very rustic. I know what you mean as far as the rain, Up here in PNW Western Washington we are expecting a atmospheric River to come in on late Saturday and early sundy morning. We do need to clean the air but not that much. :D have a wonderful and safe weekend. :D
Great saw tips.
Hot and humid here
The windows are brilliant for letting in the light aren’t they! I haven’t noticed them so much here in Australia probably because it would be too hot.
👍👍👍
Looking really good Sean, it's coming together nicely.
Sean seems a shame you have the opportunity to put in less steep stairs and move them out of sight tucked into a corner … kinda nice when you open the door not to see the stairs. Sorry we call those builders rough stairs always going into the basement.
The weather is cold and raining
Back breaking work!
I saw little ymmy straberrys😊
I think the trenches are all you need no need to dig anymore. I think heavy work like that needs a bit of strimming break :) or another project as always best not to wear yourself out. Lalacelle did a stone at the bottom addition to their cottage it looks great with a reclaimed old staircase. If you knew Ted and Lesa Rodgers at Chateau de Montmagner you could borrow theirs maybe. He had an injury a little while ago so he's out of doing any work and could lend a hand to them for the borrowing of equipment is an idea. I don't know how far you are from them. Until you get yours fixed that is. Brilliant find on those fleur de lys shelves never heard of that myself either very nice. I wish there were a Chelsea garden show in France and you could design a garden I bet it would be beautiful. I also think you would make a great panel judge for a future Chelsea Garden Show as well in the UK I can't think of anyone better :)
