The Backyard of Death: Bringing a whole new meaning to Garden Catastrophe!

Ойын-сауық

So some of you will probably remember this property because I've already done 3 episodes here. Back then I decided not to clean up the backyard and some of the front as it was just too crazy. Well, I've had a change of heart, and I'm back to finish off the whole lot. And when I say this yard is crazy, i mean CRAZY! It's full of blackberries, rubbish, old trees and what's left of the garden beds. To get this property back up to scratch, I would say it going to be quite a few episodes. I'm going to do the best I can here, as the homeowner really needs the help. I'm also going to go back over the work I've done, as I could have done better! I hope you enjoy the episode and stay tuned for the biggest transformation I've ever done - What a challenge! All up, I spent around 11.5 hours on this job, including 3 trips to the landfill. This is episode 4 of who knows how many episodes.

FAQ's:
Q: Where are you located?
A: I am from Hobart, Tasmania, Australia 🦘.
Q: Do you worry about snakes?
A: I have never even seen a snake in over 5 years on the job.
Q: Which equipment do you use?
A: Mostly STIHL power equipment (battery and petrol) and commercial Honda self-propelled mowers.
Q: How much do the jobs cost?
A: Sorry, I prefer not to talk about costs.
Q: Why don't you use tarps instead of bins?
A: Tarps are too difficult to move through small spaces and lift into the trailer. The same for wheelbarrows, they are only good for unloading the trailer!
Q: Why are the hot water cylinders outside?
A: I would say it's because Australia had a temperate to tropical climate, and therefore it doesn't matter that much if they are outdoors. To me, though, it seems a bit inefficient to have them outside in Tasmania with a temperate climate (coldish for 3 - 4 months per year). But that is industry standard down here 🤷‍♂️
Q: Why don't you have help?
A: I've had many problems with employees in the past, so now I work alone.
Q: Why don't you have a ride-on mower?
A: Well, there are a few reasons.
1. I don't have the right trailer for a ride on, considering I always take away the green waste.
2. I don't have anywhere to store it, as my shed is too small.
3. A lot of the properties we do have fences and gates, so you can't actually get a ride-on on to the properties.
4. I don't do enough big jobs to justify spending 15k AUD on a stander, but it would be nice to have one!
5. I will get one as soon as my transport and storage problems are solved.
Q: What types of ladders do you use?
A: The large one is a Gorilla Adjustable Platform 150kg and the small one is a Gorilla Mighty 19. They are both adjustable.
Q: Who/what is Jim's Mowing?
A: Jim's Mowing is a franchise business. The Jim's Group is the biggest home services franchise in Australia.
Q: Why do you have 2 channels that seem to be the same?
A: Quick Cuts (my original channel) has music in the background. Quick Cuts V2 is for those that like just machine noise, and it doesn't have music.

This cleanup may actually have saved lives. The two doors shown in this video were completely unusable before you cleared away that vegetation, so neither the residents nor firefighters could have used them in the event of a fire. I hope that someday this lady's son finds a successful treatment so that they can enjoy spending time in the garden. Sunshine and plants are very therapeutic!

I remember the earlier videos is this series and wondering about the story. Thank you for sharing the background. There are so many people overwhelmed by family members who have mental illness. It's debilitating, but as a parent myself dealing with a daughter with mental illness, there is not much support out there. It seems to be less as time goes by. Your help here, I know, will be a gift of unmeasurable proportions. Thank you so much for your work, helping those who feel helpless and stuck in their situation. By giving them a garden, for even a little while, will give them room to breathe, space to think and in nature, it's so much better than being stuck inside, feeling like there is no escape.

What a blessing you have been to this family ❤. Looking at the years of broken rubbish piled up tells a really sad story. Now that the son is a young man maybe the mother can check into a 24hr group home for him and she can visit with him daily or weekly, also he can meet friends and do different activities. This will give each of them a sense of peace and rest especially for the mom also she can ask for help in getting much needed repairs so that she can be and feel safe in her home. My sibling was mentally ill and when he moved out and got help I could see relief on my mother’s face and she was able to rest. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Thank you for your kindness to this family. I am sure they are very grateful. I have shared before that I tackled an easement near our property which was covered with black berries. The power company had cut through the area leaving the trees right where they fell. I used a push mower to cut through it. Luckily most of the remaining trees had decayed. I also cut through ferns. The neighborhood cat would watch as mice would leave when I ran the mower. There were tons of rocks. It did ruin the mower but I got it done. My husband now maintains the area with a riding mower. You do amazing work and I try not to miss an episode. We have many wild deer and they miss the blackberries. I forgot to mention that there was grass over 2 meters high obstructing the view of the neighbor’s house.

You have a very compassionate heart, George. Thank you for taking on the yard for this special family -- in spite of the brambles nemesis! Excellent music choices and editing. We who live on the other side of the globe really appreciate learning the names of the plants and trees you encounter. Thank you!

Love the way you contextualize each project. You never say too much or too little - just the right set up each time. You position your camera for the best angles. Your modus operandi is spot on - you show every step of the way in such a fluid and satisfactory manner in real time and time lapse. And you do have lots of competition on KZread, but your presentation outshines them all. Plus your generosity and kindness of heart is just the tonic the entire planet needs right now with all the vitriol and hostility being put forth towards one another. Power to you my friend. KBO as Winston Churchill use to say = "keep buggering on"

George you are so incredibly kind to go back to this place to tackle the backyard. The front was bad enough! I just can't believe what you achieved in this episode! They couldn't even use that back door up the stairs! Having an exit blocked is not safe! Now they'll be able to use it, and they will get a lot more light in the loo and bathroom since you removed all that growth up the wall. When I saw the old rock pool I felt quite sad. It seems that there was an effort made at one time to beautify the yard and that somewhere along the way all hope had been lost, but now you have come to the rescue like a shining knight in a fairytale. I'm sure the mother will be feeling this way. I feel so sorry for the young man, and for his mother. Schizophrenia is a horrible disease. I hope his caseworker and psychiatrist are making sure he is on the right meds and dosages so he doesn't fly off the handle. Thank you so very much for this. I can't wait to see how it looks when you finish, and maybe/hopefully it will be a nice place for them to relax, listen to the sounds of Nature and maybe indulge in a bit of gardening - but not blackberries!!!!! Hahahaha.

So glad that you decided to continue working on this property. It must be difficult for this mother to deal with someone with a mental illness. Hopefully this major cleanup will lift her spirits. Thanks for the good work you do every time, George. Blessings to you from central Georgia where a decent rain fell after several weeks of scorching heat.

Top man , George! Your methodical approach to these transformations, cleaning up as you go is what makes the difference. No judgement of your clients, just an understanding of human problems. Ben, Paul and Flawless Cleaning in the UK work the same, particularly helping elderly folk no longer able to care for their gardens and houses.

The peope who have it suffer terribly, and dont want to be like they are. Thanks for helping this family out. My family meber seemed to get better as they aged, i hope this gentleman finds some relief.
