Why We Still Don't Have Smart Contact Lenses

Ғылым және технология

As nanotechnology has advanced, smart contact lenses are becoming more of a reality. Companies like Mojo Vision and Innovega have working prototypes and are close to bringing this technology to market. But we're still years away from getting them into our eyes. We explore the challenges this industry has overcome and is still facing.

@@Cooper-dq1ut They already have ears that you can switch out and perform better than actual ears. Right now its to replace damaged ears, but soon we'll cross the line and willingly remove our natural ears for ones that perform orders of magnitude better via augmentation. The same will go for your eyes. You may say "never". But what happens when you're being denied a job because you can't compete at the level of those who are augmented? Its the next human revolution that has been popularized by such stories as the deus ex, and cyberpunk games. Those that refuse (or are too poor) to augment themselves will fall incredibly behind those that are. Think of today with modern computing. If you can't type, or network digitally: then you're pretty screwed. Most places don't even accept physical resumes anymore. Its not a matter of if. If the lens is on the eye and it shows an image a bit to the side, you naturally would move your eyes to look towards it to see it clearer, but the image moves with your eye so you can't. This creates a problem. The image can't be on the center either since that would block the person's view..

@@Laurarat Yes it is simple at today's age but there are many complexities in it still. It would need some sort of AI for it to differentiate between a eye movement just to see the surrounding or to see the notification. One possible solutions would be to use a blink as an indicator but I don't think that anybody would want an indicator that a human would constantly do, ie blinking thus making it again difficult to differentiate. Another issue is that it the eyes would move at all times. Little yes, but they would cause the notification to remain at the same place again causing a problem since you want it to continuosly be on the side, which can distract you thus eliminating the use of a complex solution if it would again lead to the same effect, distraction

I am weary when it comes to my eyes though, I’ve had patients with sclera abrasions (tiny scratches on their eyeball) and it is truly painful and very dangerous and scary. I mean it’s your VISION for God’s sake. Wouldn’t these smart lenses have a small battery thus meaning there is technically electricity right there on your eye? What if it malfunctions? Not to mention the hardness and rigidity of the lens, it would definitely have to be custom fit. Help people buy these colored lenses on line that are soft fit and they can scratch your eyes up so bad that you go blind because everyone’s eyes are different. You have a certain curvature of your eyeball with length, width and depth and there’s a lot to it. Bottom line... be weary of putting anything on or around your eyes. I’d feel much better just wearing a pair of glasses. Maybe not Google Glass lol but something where the “lenses” are screens, etc..

maybe there would be like a contact lenses customization fit to your eye. It's possible because you know people (not all) would do anything to advance. Also, there's an electrical component inserted in your eye but common sense will tell you that's a bad idea if things fvcked up. And all products does not last forever. It would eventually get broken, when that time comes. How would you know if that technological contact lenses is still okay to use?

The sclera lens makes sense, because they are able to be cleaned completely you can keep the same lens as long as you don’t need a prescription change. But a soft lens, at most, isn’t approved for longer than 3 months (that I know of). So do they expect you to buy a new set multiple times a year?

I'd be happy with varifocal glasses which switch seamlessly between long and short vision.

I would wear them. My issue is the additional hardware that I would be needed to warrant it's use. Where would the camera be to do object recognition? Would I use my phone's sensors? The sensors needed to locate my focus. Would you have a camera looking at my eyes? A 3dof on the lenses?

The better way perhaps is giving a live video feed directly into the visual cortex. Neuralink will really shake the world and will be the first. 👍

I have been terribly vision impaired all my life. I have a full range of colors and I can see technically. Everything is blurry, badly blurry. I would love for this technology to be able to give me the power to focus in and out. I realized I’d still be wearing contacts and or glasses but I want to be able to focus

"probability in the money feature has a counterpart probability out the money that estimates the likelihood of an option finishing out of the money just as you’d expect, if you put the two side by side, you’d see that they add up to one hundred percent neither is better than the other. some traders like to see it expressed one way, and others like to see it the other way"
