Why We Must Learn the Art of Doing Nothing | Vantage with Palki Sharma

Why We Must Learn the Art of Doing Nothing | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Niksen, is a Dutch concept of “doing nothing”. It is a stress-relief practice based on just being rather than being present. It comes with a lot of perks. It helps regain focus and increases productivity. It can even boost creativity. There are physical benefits as well. Niksen can help curtail ageing, anxiety and stress. It can boost immunity. Despite an array of benefits, niksen can be difficult to achieve. Yet this is fuelling a growing number of stress and anxiety related problems. The world faces a crisis of burnout. Will practising niksen help? Why do we resist doing nothing? Palki Sharma tells you.

In my first office job, I was stressing out and overworking after office hours, worrying about results. But reading the Bhagavad Gita, it changed my life completely. I started to not care too much about work or life happenings anymore, it gave me the mindset, "Do your best, and God will do the rest." After all not everything is in our hands. From there on, I rather became more productive and more chill, people sometimes may think I am not taking it serious, but I don't care, it's better to be chill than stressed out. HariBol

You don't even have to do your best. Life is pre written (every second of it) and you can't change it. At least that's what I believe in now. I always believed in destiny in the past as well🙂 Let me give you my life story as an example - I am 34. Born & raised in India and living in the US since 2006. I got married to love of my life in 2012 Bought 2.5 million dollar home in 2015 Blessed with a daughter in 2017 Life was great 🙂 2020 - we divorced out of nowhere - a few verbal arguments here and there for a couple weeks and ex wife wanted divorce. I didn't want divorce. During the same time, I lost my job where I worked for 6 years without any issues. I got another job within weeks because of my experience. Again no big deal. Had to sell our home because of divorce. Now, I am renting a one bedroom apartment. I can easily buy a fancy new house, but I have 0 motivation now. The worst of all - I get to see my daughter only 50% of the times. She would never see her mom-dad together. I also always wanted a big family - 3-4 kids. Now, I don't care about getting married again. I have decided to never remarry (or how I like to say it - it's part of my destiny)🙂 Moral of the story is - Don't try to change anything. Let life happen to you. You can't change your destiny. If you are meant to be jobless, you'll be jobless. If you meant to be homeless, you'll be homeless. If you meant to be a billionaire, you'll be billionaire and all of that is pre written and that is too way before you were born 🙂

@@rrboss3721 Sorry to hear what happened and I am happy you are moving ahead. But our life destiny doesnt decide everything in our life it is our actions. Destiny controls major events birth, death, midlife crisis. But we can still make it or break it. The choice is ours. Even i went through bad divorce. I was loosing myself and on verge of self destruction when I discovered spirituality. It really helped calm my mind, accept the outcomes of my actions. Astrologer told I will be settling in abroad. I decided not to. We can change our life for good if you focus on positive side and for bad if we keep cribbing anout what happened, gets demotivated. I have seen people destroy their own lives because of love failures. It is because of their own choices not destiny. Like the first comment do your best, God will take care of rest. Also one more thing I learnt ups and downs are to make us a better person. Learn karmic lessons. But whether we become or not or will do the same mistakes again is up to us.

Doing nothing is very easy but the problem here is people have a tendency to overthink about their unhappy past events and which will make them more depressed that’s why everyone wants to be engaged.Lots of people are going through difficult and unfortunate personal situations while they are being highly successful at work. People try to manage their personal stress due to family problems with high productivity at work. Usually men does that.

I have mastered the art of doing nothing. Started when I was in my teens. Freedom is if you don't have to do nothing and don't have to pay for nothing.. You can choose between living or being lived.. Not a difficult issue if you realise that you only live once!😎

As a native Dutch speaker I'm amazed to know that this word's becoming a "thing" now. It's been stigmatized as a bad habit... until now. It helps me getting out of the burnout... actually ... I'm forced "om te niksen" because I can't do anything else.

Meditation is just that, if one has understood the true meaning of it. The aim of meditation is to slow down the thoughts and detach from the so called productive and busy life.

It requires a measure of intellectual development or 'enlightenment' & contentment... even to be able to think that we are not in control of anything, so drastically toning down our desires, sometimes even apathy towards life & society in general is required to.... truly relax. 1. In any case, no one is going live hale & healthy for 150 years 2. No one requires a space more than 7 feet to take rest or sleep in a safe, comfortable house ( its not necessary that it should be big ) 3. No one requires more than a MaximuM of three meals a day. This is irrespective of the quantum of money one possesses And money cannot give you spiritual knowledge, enlightenment or resultant contentment.... (Even a wife & children are luxuries of life, We should be able to live With Luxuries or even Without Them) Both should be okay.... So why chase money more than it's necessary ( and invite unnecessary mental stress ) We should try to think beyond Maayaa The Dutch are genius 😊😄😂

Thank you Madam, 35 years ago I attended a program called the Art of Non Doing conducted by one a Shri Rishi Prabhakar who had an organisation called Sidha Samadhi Yoga. He very much espoused the same thing. Another of the self realisation-assessment of our mundane selves was also successfully brought forth by Mr Werner Erhardt in a program 'EST" For many of people like me who went to a convent (English medium school) we are now finding our path by reading the Upanishads rather late in our September years. It is all there ...Solutions to the problems we face ..

The concept of the "art of doing nothing" does have its roots in various Eastern philosophies, including Indian traditions. In Indian philosophy and spiritual practices such as yoga and meditation, there is a recognition of the importance of stillness, quieting the mind, and being present in the moment. This idea aligns with the concept of niksen and Osho's teachings on mindfulness and meditation. In these traditions, the practice of doing nothing isn't about laziness or inactivity but about cultivating a state of awareness, inner peace, and relaxation. So, while niksen may be a Dutch term, the underlying concept of embracing idleness and stillness has parallels in Indian philosophy and spiritual practices

I think this doing nothing way of leading life when our mind and body demand is Best rejuvenator of our life. It needs lots of patience. It is the skill master. I think what we generally feel like boredom, like can't keep quiet for a few moments, or like saying that "I want to stay doing something till end of life" but objectively the person is not healthy or not with energy. Doing nothing state of leading life for some time will remove Staleness in one's life. I think this is in our Mind. Cannot stop doing something or cannot do something or not initiation to be active = Inertia of Motion or Inertia of Rest in our minds.

Surprising to see such views from Indian journalists !!! But doing nothing is very hard as we are so much conditioned from our childhood to do multiple things so that you can better life later. This conditioning is so strong that we continue to be busy throughout our life. And then we give meaning to this by saying "empty mind is the devil's mind".
